The University of Missouri football game at Nebraska on Oct. 4th has been chosen for a national cable telecast on ESPN, and will kickoff at 8 p.m. (central). The game will mark Mizzou's second appearance on ESPN already this season, adding to the season-opening 52-42 win over 20th-ranked Illinois on Aug. 30th, that was shown by the network.
If the game isn't where you find the Gameday Crew, I'll be putting my clowny foot up Herby's arse.
The Big 12 is now operating on its 12-day advance notification process for all future weekends, because let's face it, all eye's are on Mizzou and Oklahoma from here on out.
While I am concerned about OU taking on TCU this weekend, Mizzou has a rough schedule from here on out with trips to Lincoln, Austin and dates with an improved Big 12 North. The last thing the Big 12 needs is one of our elite to fall to a team from a lesser conference so the Sooners better be ready. All due respect to Kansas, but that loss to USF is embarrassing. But at this point, no one is invincible in college football anymore.
Which brings me back to the Tiger trip to Lincoln. Despite recent #### whoopings inflicted on the Cornhuskers, all of them occurred in Columbia. In fact, Mizzou has not won in Lincoln in decades.
That fact alone is reason for any gambler to avoid this game like the plague.
Stick to Florida State/Miami that weekend.
Added to the intrigue surrounding this game is an improved Corhusker defense showing signs of swagger under the leadership of first year coach, longtime Husker, Bo Pelini.
This week they get a nice warm up game with the Hokies coming to town. Honestly, I wish Mizzou had the Fighting Beamers coming into town instead of the boys watching the game on the couch.
The Tigers are 4-5 after bye weeks heading into conference play under Gary Pinkel.
The history behind this game is stacked against a Missouri win, but this is a Tiger squad that is re-writing that history since the historic #1 ranking a year ago.
Chase Daniel will be the shortest Heisman winner since Nebraska's Eric Crouch. The first in school history.
The first conference championship since 1969. The Dec. 6th Big 12 Championship Game will likely look like a Mizzou home game at Arrowhead. Coincidentally, it will be the Tigers second straight game at the stadium as they meet Kansas Nov. 29th. It will also be likely that those are the two best games played at the NFL stadium this year. Boy the Chiefs are BAAADD. Sorry, dad.
Sounds like a storybook year in the making for the Missouri Tigers.
The Nebraska game will also be the first time that a captive national audience will get to see Mizzou's defense since the Illinois game. This isn't the same defensive squad rusty from a summer break.
Defensive leader Weatherspoon was recently honored for his career day, as he led Mizzou with a career-high 20 tackles against Buffalo. Among those tackles included three tackles for a loss, including a sack, while also breaking up one pass. Mizzou had a nice defensive tune-up against Buffalo, as it allowed an opponent season-low 286 yards of offense to a Buffalo team that came into the game averaging 427 yards per game.
As the great T.O. likes to say, "Get your popcorn ready!"
It will be nice for the nation to see mizzu on national t.v. but since they haven't won in lincoln in a long time this could be the demise of their hopefull championship run. I am a loyal husker fan and am waiting for the tigers to come here. You better hope that they don't pull a usc and be out of bowl contention. Though, their offense scares the bejezzus out of me. I am confident that they will lose in Lincoln. good luck and nice post
Another great post! I am excited about the Nebraska game because Nebraska is making a comeback to respectability.
This will be a great test for both teams and will tell the country a lot about Mizzou, Nebraska and the quality of the Big XII.
MU getting dropped by the AP after the entire country watched LSU struggle against Auburn while almost no one watched the regional coverage of the Missouri game, I am confused as to what the AP writers based thier rankings on.
Missouri is not a media darling like LSU so we games like Nebraska, Texas, Kansas are critical for mizzou.
fishboy,
Don't hate on LSU dude! Auburn may not have a great offense but the D is very good. LSU's problem was QB play but that kicked in at the right time.
rbb,
Nice post as usual dude, USC losing will help both our Tiger teams move on up the polls. I'm actually very interested in seeing this game between Mizzou and the Huskers. Huskers are a team I liked since I was a kid, and I have lots of respect for Chase Daniel. So I'll be watching this one for sure, just to bad it's another week away.
Fishboy - Hey, we have some tough dates and everyone acts like Mizzou has a cakewalk because we won't see OU until Dec. 6th.
Watching that USC game, I couldn't help but see Daniel and the guys do the same. USC looked HUGE next to those guys, but in the end the spread was the great equalizer.
gambit - I feel awful foolish ranking USC at the top of the Homer poll this week. While I can already see OU at the top of the other polls next Monday, my Mizzou is still better.
Auburn was a spectacular win for LSU. Things are getting interesting with Alabama making noise. We have some great matchups coming up! That defense is good, but Alabama is dangerous on special teams.
Nobody expects them to win against Georgia, but I see two undefeated teams meeting Nov. 8th.
I only hope my Huskers show well this weekend and make this the marquee matchup that it should be. The only thing I can guarantee your Tigers when they come to Lincoln is that the entire fanbase in Nebraska wants to win this game more than any other on our schedule this year. Even Oklahoma.
Some may call it hate. I call it respect. I have long respected the Tigers ever since I was a youngun and had to listen to those 'damn' Tigers, with James Wilder and crew, beat my Huskers in Lincoln in 1978. And no doubt my 'Skers have a tall task in front of them if they are to take your Tigers down this year. I only hope that both teams play well, and that the best team wins in the end. No doubt my heart will be on my sleeve, but I will definitely shake the hand of anybody that beats my team in our house.
If Nebraska doesn't turn the ball over this weekend, I see no way Virginia Tech can win that game.
"Beamer Ball" is based on special teams play and scoring off the other team's mistakes.
Nebraska is strong on defense against the one thing Virginia Tech has any success doing on offense. Namely, running the football.
No one expects Beamer to beat you with the passing game. This year the Hokies are weak in pass protection.
If Nebraska plays their 'A' game, almost a given under Pelini, then they will win.
Best of luck to the Cornhuskers. If you didn't know it already, your coach is a winner from the word go. This LSU fan appreciates all he did for the Fighting Tigers.
Now you get to show the world Nebraska football is back.

I don't know if Nebraska is ready to make the next step back just yet. I expect VaTech to beat them this week, but if not then this makes sense.
Have to love college football. Surfing 3 games, MSU-Indiana scoring fest, UNC just scored to close within 24-21 against The U and Iowa/NW 17-16 in the 4th.
oldskewl - Those Tom Osborne spots that ran during the game are great for in state walk-ons, but Nebraska needs a little more than that to recruit the out of state kids more inclined to go to Mizzou or OU or Texas these days.
I have been blogging here for so long, I forgot my old password and had to set up a new blog this year. BOO!
Anyway, my old space was at community.fox sports.com/bl ogs/brianblac k in case you think you've heard the trash talk before... It's the same this year as it was last year... Mizzou is #1!!!!!!! Go Cowboys! Go Rays!
