Now I don't want to lie to you and say I'm a huge Davidson fan... because well I'm not. But like everyone else in the world not from Kansas I was cheering for Davidson to shock Kansas just like they did to Georgetown and Wisconsin. I was dissappointed when they came up two points shy in their elite effort. But when I heard the news that Stephen Curry was staying for his junior year at Davidson I really got excited. I am going out on a limb right now, April 1st 2008, and saying that Davidson will win the National Championship in 2009. I know that they are losing very, very good point guard Jason Richards but they still have Stephen Curry and as we saw thats almost all you need. Next time around Davidson will have some greatly needed experience, but no one is going to underestimate them like they did this time around. There are two reasons for that. 1. They know they made it to the elite 8 this year. 2. They will be much higher then a 10 seed.
Has a "mid-major" ever won a National Championship?
I wouldn't jump on that bandwagon yet. He's a great player but each one of those guys on the team played a role and was a very important cog in the lineup.
A "Mid-Major" school has never won the national championship. Davidson will not win the national championship because they are losing some major talent and will not be able to sneak up on anyone. Teams will be ready for Davidson next year and that will make it that much harder for them. Remember when George Mason made the Final Four in 2006?
The next year they weren't a surprise to anyone and weren't even able to make the tournament.
I agree with the two previous commenters - Davidson has had their 15 minutes of fame. Curry is a "lights out" shooter, no doubt. In my humble opinion, he should have gone pro now - his stock could not be higher. While I wish him good luck personally, I do not think Davidson will contend again as they did this year anytime soon.
I live right down the road from Davidson and I have been to their campus for a few concerts and such. Guess I ought to check out a basketball game... Steph Curry is awesome. I root for all the local teams to do well come Tournament time and Davidson was a blast to watch this year. I disagree with the previous poster beacuse I believe Curry needs another year in college to improve his ball handling skills. He's a pretty small guy and in the NBA that usually means you better got handles. I really think he has the shooting ability to make a name for himself in the pros, but I think it's a year away. He made the right call. Even if Davidson doesn't contend next year like they did this year, he's still the kind of special player whose impact will be undeniable. Davidson is losing a few seniors this year so next year is not set in stone. Sweeping the SoCon two years straight is highley unlikely (just ask App State's football team) because everyone will be gunning for them. With that said, any team with Stephen Curry on it is going to compete for that conference title and automatic bid. Here's looking forward to another exciting year for the Wildcats of Davidson!
Saturn made some good points. Stephen Curry is a great shooter, but his game is not polished enough to be in the NBA. He needs another year or two to polish his ball skills. Although the loss of Jason Richards will hurt the Wildcats, it will help Curry because he will asked to play some point guard next year. Playing point next year will allow Curry to dribble and work on his ball skills, making him a more complete player.
