It'd appear that at the National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York Serena Williams as well as the world's number 2 ranked male player , Rafael Nadal had a rough night. It can't have been too pleasing to the eyes of many of their fans.
One the one hand we had an exhilerating game between Serena Williams and Justine Henin-Hardenne. Williams the hometown favorite was hoping to make her way into the semi-finals. But unfortunaltely she was unable to make this a reality. And the US's sole hope on the women's tournament now rests in the hands of her sister Venus Williams. Inasmuch as the sisters had dominated the sport between 2000-2003 they've not had any real success up until this and last year in any of the Grand Slam tournaments. But that was to have been expected as they had to overcome several serious injuries as well as the death of a sibling.

Williams in her post conference interview was less than complimentary to her opponent. Blaming her loss on everything from a slight injury to the fact that there were several arguable calls that didn't go her way. However what was clearly evident was that Williams was at nowhere near the peak of her physical capabilities. Whilst Henin just played a superior brand of tennis on the night. The expectations were great and the crowd were expecting a win for Williams. And as hard as she tries she was unable to pull out a vctory.

The fans duely acknowledged Henin's victory and the spirit with which the game was played. But one can't help but wonder if they weren't pulling for that homegrown win. So as it is, the last hopes of America within this tournament rests in the hands of Venus Williams on the women's side. And on the men's side it'd appear that Andy Roddick has the unenviable task of facing Roger Federer . A task that as of late has proven to be too much for him. Federer has been Roddick's Achilles' heel over the past five years. Yet going to this tournament there were high hopes that the US would fare well on both sides of the equation. Both James Blake and Andy Roddick had been playing well and it was felt that both if not one of them would have a good showing in the tournament. That being said Blake threw away a golden oppurtunity to make it into the semis. With that loss Roddick now is the only surviving Amrican male left in the tournament. With that in mind consider this , his last outings against Federer have not been memorable ones. It'd appear that the state of US tennis is once again in a state of disarray. The major US stars are no longer playing at a consistently high standard of tennis. At best they're marginally making any sort of presence felt on the circuit. Albeit that only the Williams sisters have actually won a slam event this year. On the men's side there they've been woefully inept. And their only cause for celebration has been their showing in the Davis Cup, a world wide team event.

Nadal's showing in this tournament has been somewhat inconsistent and this may have been brought on by a niggling injury that he's maintained since the start of the tournament. Tendinitis when diagnosed can be intensley painful , especially when it's in the knees. And for a player of Nadal's stealth where speed is of the essence and a factor in his power game. He needs to be firing on all cylinders if he's to be at his best. In playing his fellow compatriot David Ferrer , Nadal didn't fare too well losing in four sets to the Spaniard. The score is reflective of what took place on court 6-7,6-4,7-6(4),6-2. Nadal was impaired by the injury was seen to be slow during the game.

Not taking anything for granted but Ferrer is to be commended on taking advantage of the situation and totally acquitting himslelf well against the number 2 ranked player in the world. Their play at times was of a consistently high standard but one could see that with Nadal's injury persisting , it was only a matter of time before he would succumb to Ferrer's superior play. Nadal for his path did not use this as an excuse for his loss to his young opponent. The crowd in attendance were very voiciferous and complimentary to both players on their play. And as the match ended their applause could be heard throughout the stands.

With the expected showdown of a Federer Nadal final not now coming about it's left the field clear for Federer to win his fourth straight US Open. A feat that hasn't been achieved in the Open era . It may be that Federer's most dangerous foe left in the tournament now is Novak Djokovic. Djokovic has been playing some exceptional tennis as of late . And his number 3 ranking in the world is well justified. His play in this tournament has been exemplorary and hasn't gone unnoticed by his fellow players. They too acknowledge that he's now the dark horse in the field. The anticipation now has been heightened as this is the final Grand Slam event of the season and the last chance at glory for many of the remaining players in the tournament.

For all of the expectations that comes from the game it must be said that the degree of sportsmanship that has been shown has been of a great joy to watch. As with many other sports it's not always seen. But in the sport of tennis now it has a policy of decency that has to be maintained on court. The players themselves are well aware of this and the expctations that the public and audience are willingly seeking of them.
So there you have it and the makeup of the US Open as it now stands. What are you expecting to see as the tournament plays itself out ? Comment on it as you'd deem fit.
