We've long known that sex sells ! But that wasn't the primary reason that female journalists were placed on the sidelines to report the facts to the fans. Many of these females were actually very good at what they did but in order to give them somewhat of a much more higher profile. The producers and directors decided that it would be preferable to glamorize them as an asset to their respective sport's programs.
Jillian Baberie and Pamela Anderson in a self deprecating pose on the Fox sport's related show on which Barberie appeared for several years. Adding a bit of wit and sassiness to the the procedure on the show. Many felt that it was purely to add that sexual element on a male dominated and oriented show.
Hence the rise of the likes of Jillian Barberie and Lisa Guerrero. Who in many respects we could never really take seriously in their supposed chosen field. In many ways the more serious female sports journalists were denied the fact of being taken seriously in their chosen profession on broadcast television with regard to sport's journalism.
A less professional looking Lisa Guerrero in an FHM magazine expose' cover. Guerrero was a sideline reporter on Sunday games in the NFL for the Fox and then ABC/EPSN network.
Both Guerrero and Barberie have used this as a stepping stone to further their careers in other avenues such acting and product endorsements with regard to advertizing. Neither has seemed to have been hurt by this career move !
Robin Roberts, Linda Cohn , Bonnie Bernstein and Michelle Tafoya were more than capable journalists and well respected by their male counterparts. But today we see so little of the female journalist on the broadcast networks and cable outlets reporting in the field. Why that is , is open to question ? But one thing is for certain the less we see of them reporting from a male dominated arena the more it'll be noted that they'll be pushed to the sidelines to report on the more feminine sports arena where it's probably felt they're better served. Mary Carillo has served the sport of tennis well, as have Pam Shriver and Mary Joe Fernandez.
Robin Roberts formerly of ESPN and ABC's Wide World of Sports was one of the pre eminent female sport's journalists of her era. A multiple Emmy award winner, Roberts is well respected by her male and female counterparts alike. Roberts is now a cohost on ABC's Good Morning America alongside respected reporter Diane Sawyer.
Linda Cohn was one the first females to appear as an anchor on ESPN and then as co-anchor the cable outlet's premiere news sport's program Sportscenter. Cohn has proven to be a more than capable journalist and a very knowledgeable one also. She's also stood in for many of her male counterparts on the station's flagship radio sport's talk programs including the ' Dan Patrick Show ' and Colin Cowherd's 'The Herd Show'. More than enabling us to get a fix and knowledge of Cohn's considerable abilities as a sport's journalist.
Bonnie Bernstein a former alumnus of ESPN. Bernstein is now one of the sideline reporters for CBS and their coverage of the NFL. The NFL hasn't been the only area of Berntsein's expertise as she's reported on a various number of avenues within the sporting arena.
A pregnant Michelle Tafoya reporting from the sidelines during an NFL game. Tafoya has proven to be stalwart amongst her compatriots always willing to what's necessary to get the story told and be presented in a professional manner.
A graduate of the Univeresity of Miami with a degree in broadcast journalism. Suzy Kolber is one the more popular female anchors and journalists with sport's giant ESPN with whom she's been since 1993. Bright and articulate she presents the sport's news and features with a great deal of professional manner. And is clearly a fan favorite amongst NFL and sport's fans alike ! .
Then we have former Olympic swimming star and medalist Summer Sanders presenting an NBA sport's program that's endorsed and fully supported by the NBA itself. The NBA's All Access Pass. Sanders at times when presenting seems completely out of place and as such has seen her time infront of the camera diminished as her duties have all but been taken over by former Vikings' wide receiver Ahmad Rashad. Sanders just didn't seem to fit the bill when it came to her reporting on the sport of basketball, as she seemed fully out of her depth ! And although they'd cohosted the show for a period of time the chemistry just wasn't there ! Rashad singularly, now hosts the show while Sanders is no longer seen.
Ahmad Rashad alonside his former cohost Summer Sanders. Rashad now presents the NBA sanctioned Inside Suff which had been at one time known as the NBA's Access Granted. Sanders no longer appears on the show as the sole reponsibility for hosting the show now is in the hands of Rashad.
It doesn't all have to be about sexuality to sell the product on tv for the male viewer but it has certainly helped ! And that is perhaps why we've seen the rise of a more sexually appealing female reporter on television rather than a well versed one as an anchor or sideline reporter. It doesn't necessarily mean that many of these females aren't qualified but one has to have a doubt about their abilities to perform to the highest standards required.
