Kenny Schrader was picked by RCR to race the #33 car in the Cocoa Cola 600 if he qualifies. This will make 4 cars that RCR will put in this race.
This is a great break for Kenny Schrader to have a ride in quality equipment. Kenny will race any thing in any series at a drop of the hat usually commuting from race to race on his motorcycle. One of the most likable drivers in the garage with a good sense of humor and a tolerance of Mikey Walrip on the Speed Channel Monday night shows. In a way I think he keeps Mikey's bable short.
What does this mean for Kenny in the CUP series? This announcement was for only this race. Does this mean Kenny has more rides lined up with RCR in the future? It would be hard to tell at this point.
I would think RCR hired Kenny to field the fourth team as an advisor and formulate the fourth team. With Kenny's experience, he would be a good choice and have the capacity to make suggestions and ideas that would benefit a team in its early stages.
It is a good possibility that this is only a short assignment and Kenny will hand over the car and team to a younger driver once the team is up to speed. I am thinking Richard's son if he is old enough yet or one of the drivers in his development series.
Although 57 years old now, it doesn't seem like Kenny is going to slow down any time soon. Either way, it would be good to see Kenny racing once again in the CUP series. I wish him well.
Thanks for the great story about a great guy. I hate to see him trying to hang on at the end of his career. But, I always have hope that he'll have one more good finish in him.
Im glad to see Schrader have this opportunity to drive with RCR for Charlotte. But I think your're right...and it may not amount to any type of long term potential with the team. Still...he is a well repsected driver, and would be a sentimental favorite to win again before closing out his Cup career. BTW he was born in 1955, so he turns 53 this year.
Great blog Photo, love the pics. I think Kenny would be a great young driver mentor but not until he goes out in style from CUP on his terms! (I hope!!)
Good to see Ken Schrader get a quality ride with a quality team this late in his career. He's had some good results with crappy cars in recent years; perhaps he'll have his best result of the year driving for RCR. GO KEN GO!
Kenny should be promoted to the office of "Ambassador of Nascar". Automatic exemption in all races, officiate at all Nascar functions, picks pit stall first, and makes the chase every year. And if you have a problem with that, go suck up to Kurt and Kyle.
Ken Schrader....Most lovable driver of all times. For 25 years he has been the smiling face of Nascars number one,(insert drum roll here)
"Nice Guy." With only 4 wins and 23 poles he won't be remembered for his racing ability, but he will be remembered as a gentleman.
This man missed his calling, with that face his sense of humor he would have made a successful, clean talking comedian. Another, Red Skelton maybe.
bobdot, LOL. Great idea. 24x2 is right about Kenny being such a good person. I've met him and Kenny Wallace at our dirt track in Cleveland. Both have huge, giving hearts. Photo, actually Kenny is only 52. He was born in 1955. Also, it is grandsons of Childress that are racing. Their last name is Dillon. Anyway, I hope Kenny gets in the race.
My mistake. I was thinking he was older than me. 57 did seem old for him. Oh well. Better to read further on things. No matter what his age, he is trully a gentleman and a great ambassador for NASCAR. Some of these young bucks can learn a thing or two from him.
I would certainly hope so. If he gets really aggressive ( not his style), He could win the 600. Heck I would be excited as all get out if he could finish in the top 5.
When I heard the news about him driving for RCR in the 600, I just had to pay tribute to him. Seems he really doesn't get much press any more for some reason.
Photo--I read this and kept looking for the punch line..and relized you were serious..well congrats to Schrader I always liked the guy but sometimes you gotta know when to say when..I wish him good luck hes gonna need it..good post thanks for showing there are some that the fire still burns in..
Sorry there was no punch line for Schrader. Probably the most underrated and under appreciated driver in NASCAR. Just had to give him some kuddos. Now the other drivers are fair game like Mikey, Kyle, Jr., Stewart, Montoya,Hamlin, the Rainbow Warroirs, and a few others.
I hope that this turns into something for Kenny. Maybe something like what Mark Martin has at DEI. Sharing a ride with a young gun. Teaching that young gun the ropes and helping the veteran keep a ride on his terms.
Kudos to Richard Childress for putting Kenny in this car, at least for this race.

It's guys like Schrader that makes the sport what it is. We know that the high profile drivers'll be at the fore.
But others such as Schrader still make the sport relevant. They've got fans who are just as loyal.
Have a happy Memorial Day alongside your loved ones ! Chimin' out.
