The Patriots will eclipse 60 sacks in 2008
Aug 02, 2008 | 10:07AM | report this

With 2008 approaching quickly the Patriots will look to put up eye popping numbers in sacks this year. Last year the Patriots finished 2nd in total sacks with 47. This year however, the Patriots get to feed off of inexperienced quarterbacks, rookie lineman, and the general bottom feeders of the NFL. Look at this lineup of quarterbacks the Pats expect to face in 2008

Brodie Croyle, Kellon Clemons x2, Josh Mccown x2, Alex Smith, Phillip Rivers, Jay Cutler, Marc Bulger, Peyton Manning, Trent Edwards x2, Ben Roethlisberger, Matt Hasselbeck, Jamarcus Russell, and Matt Leinart.

(In just over a month he is coming to Foxboro.)

The average amount of sacks allowed by those teams was 39.2. Plus, in my opinion the Patriots front 7 is the most elite pass rushing unit in the league. The defense will be boosted by the return of a healthy Richard Seymour, who when healthy is the best defensive lineman in the NFL. Also, Adalius Thomas is switching permanently to his natural position at OLB which should result in some fireworks. Jarvis Green who is a situational DE in the Pats 3-4 had 7 sacks last year, and could improve upon that number this year. While the Bears record of 72 is out of reach, the Patriots opponents will be playing from behind, and will be passing in bunches leading to easy sacks. It's a possiblity that the Patriots will lead the league in sacks, and eclipse 60 in doing so.

It's Going to be a tough year for opposing quarterbacks.

Great post! Just think that's assuming that the starting QBs are healthy!

Here's what I think in terms of how many times the Pats will sack each QB.

Croyle- 4
Clemens- 6
McCown- 8
Smith- 4
Rivers- 2
Cutler- 3
Bulger- 4
Manning- 1 (he's so good at getting the ball away in time)
Edwards- 6
Roethlisberger- 3
Hasselbeck- 4
Russell- 3
Leinart- 3

So, that adds up to 51 sacks! Not shabby at all.

Keep the goog stuff coming! Take care!

YOU NEVER KNOW DO YOU.MOST PEOPLE DIDNT THINK THE GIANTS COULD MAKE SUPERBOWL AND WIN IT. I ACTUALLY PICKED THE GIANTS TO PLAY THE COLTS BEFORE THE 2007 NFL SEASON STARTED. THEN AFTER THE GIANTS WON THREE STRAIT ROAD GAMES IN THE PLAYOFFS, AND THE WAY THE PATS SLOWED DOWN AT THE END OF THE YEAR, IT WAS OBVIEOUS WOH WAS PLaying better at the time.so,t ahts why i picked the giants to beat the pats. and what is the league average for sacks.

richard seymour is very good, but i dont believe he is even the best lineman on your team, i would give that to vince wilfork, dudes a beast, and if seymour was the best in the league, he would have pulled eli down in the biggest game of his carrer. the big question will be, how much brady will get sacked, teams know the only way to slow that offense down, is to get after brady, abd while the pats do have one of the best o-lines in the league, more tema will be doing more exotic things to get after him. nice post, good luck to ya guys
GO COLTS

I wholeheartedly disagree with your Wilfork assesment. He is definately not better than Richard Seymour. Richard Seymour when healthy commands a double-team, yet he still disrupts the passer. While he may not have flashy sack totals It is awfully impressive on run plays when it is the offensive lineman being driven back instead of the defensive lineman. As far as his clutch play all you need to do is see any of the film any of the games he is healthy, he influences virtually every big play on defense. He wasn't the one who had the best shot at Eli on that play it was Adalius Thomas.

well i remember seymour sayin after the game that any other time he'd grab a hold of eli like that he would go down, i saw the film of that play, and quite honestly, it looked like he could of tried a bit harder, but it's totally different being out there, and watchin it. i understand you dont agree with my assesment, but putting seymour as best d-lineman in the league is far-fetched. he is great, but i'd put Haynesworth, Freeney, Allen, and Osi, ahead of him, but thats just my opinion. seymour is better at stopping the run than freeney, or allen, but all those guys also command double teams, and still get after the q.b. too.

No matter how one looks at this upcoming season. The team has a great deal to play for. And more than anything else it'll be about resurrecting their pride and the doubts that some people definitely'll have about this team. They'll get the sacks but what I want to see is not a drop off in form from what transpired because of the Superbowl.
If they can get that in place then they'll fare well this upcoming season.
