"Win now, screw our future"

The Astro's new catch phrase "Win now, screw our future"

Win now? (or try to) Trade all our top prospects! Worry about the future of this club later! Wow! Great idea Ed! This is the approach new Astro's GM Ed Wade seems to be taking. Three months as a GM for the Astros and he has somehow traded six players and gained two. Now I'm wondering if Tim Purpura (former GM) was such a bad guy after all? Two wrongs certainly can't make things right here. Don't worry Wade, I know all the blame doesn't fall solely on you. I'm sure Drayton Mclane (owner) has something to do with it as well. The Astro's went from making their first World Series appearance to finishing in fourth place in the division. Ticket sales, I'm sure, are the first and foremost thing on Draytons mind right now. With Biggio retired and only one ace in the starting rotation (Roy Oswalt) who is going to want to buy season tickets or even spend the ridiculous amount money it cost to see a game?

So this has become the quick fix to Houston’s problems, trade who we can now to get players that will help us win games next year. I have no problem with Ed and Drayton signing, Kaz M. and Tejada. Both are great players. Just don’t sacrifice what little prospects we did have in the process. The Astro’s have always had a strong fan base. Minute Maid has sold out game after game after game since opening day in 2000. But what future does it hold when we are losing our future guys and gaining players with one, two, and three year contracts? You still haven't even addressed to biggest problem of all.......PITCHING! Maybe that will cost us our outfield?

While Tejada is still an excellent player, the Astros gave up too much. Bad trade at a bad time. They need pitching and GAVE UP pitching in the trade. I can see the logic of the trade if all they needed was a big bat. But they have many glaring needs that Tejada alone won't meet.

Yep. This was a horrible trade for Houston. The only thing that could make it worse would be for Tejada's name to show up on a certain report being released tomorrow.

p rez, I agree with your post. From all I have heard from Philly fans, Wade was the worst trade for us overall. Regarding Tejada, it looks like the O's had the inside scoop on the Mitchell report.

no doubt about tejada, we can only wait and see how things turn out. clemens and pettitte have both already come out and denied having any involvment, so i'm sure other players will as well. so this might be a long drawn out process.

i totally agree with you guys, I'm a Pirates fan, so i have experience with one year deals at the expense of your top minor league talent. I think what the Astros have done this week is an absolute crime, get rid of Everett, one of the best defensive guys in the bigs, and bring in Miguel "Too Slow" Tejada...the man needs to be at third at this stage in his career, I promise that the pitching staff is shaking now that Everett is gone, they know what he brought to the table. I'm sure they aren't too thrilled about losing one of their best young arms that probably was ready to step up and answer the call this season (Troy Patton). Tejada couldn't win in Oakland or Baltimore, he's not going to do it in Houston, I feel for their fans, because they also shipped out one of their prized possesions from the Lidge deal (Mike Constanzo, one of the top prospects in all of minor league baseball, who by the way plays infield pretty dang well as well as produces at the plate). This week has been horrible for the astros, the Twins sure got a deal in agreeing to terms with Everett...

besubaru, good points in your comment. a lot of people don't actually understand who we gave up in this trade. they were some top prospects that have bright futures in the league.

Well Ed Wade does make me nervous. He has made many changes in the Astro's organization in a very short time. We have also seen reservation in the mouth of our first baseman, not that Berkman has ever learned to keep his mouth shut. The minor leaguers that Wade has given up were aces by no means. (hope I don't eat my words) The one prospect that we picked up in the Lidge trade (Mike Costanzo) then gave up, makes me think the Tejada trade was a poor decision. My main concern is all the new player learning to play as a team rather than a bunch of ego maniacs. Houston has always been able to play team ball with relatively low payroll, sucessfully. Pitching is not available this year without excellent trade bait, which was non-exsistant prior to Wades entering our organization. I hope that they do get aggresive trying to pick up non-college talent around the globe. Picking up Kaz, should open the door for an Asain market of prospects.

i couldn't agree with you more about the atros needing to go after some quality college talent to booster the farm system. but that is only one of many things needing to be done here. thanx for the comment

Hello all, my name is P_REZ. I have always been involved in sports. From playing, to coaching, to watching, and betting. I am a native Houstonian. Which means I take Houston sports very seriously! The Astro's, Rocket's, and Texan's (Oiler's) are my favorite Teams! I don't always agree with some of the moves they tend to make (via trades, play calling, moving a franchise) but I do support them. Make no mistake about that! I think I am pretty knowledgeable
when it comes to sports. I have written a few blog's and will be writting a lot more in the future (or at least when I think certain things need to be addressed) I'll let you be the judge. So feel free to post a comment on my blog's and let me know what you think. Thanks! T/C until next time.........
