I need some help.  Living in South Texas, my Hockey knowledge is near zero.  I try to follow the Dallas Stars, but am not doing a very good job of it.

I don't understand the scoring.   Wins, losses, ties....points?  What are points issued for?

Aren't wins, losses, and ties all there needs to be counted?   What's with all the fights?

I'm not making fun, I seriously want to know.  It's obviously a demanding sport, I mean you have to be athletic just to stay up on skates.
