Woodhead Finally Gets His Wish
Apr 28, 2008 | 12:44PM | report this

The all-time NCAA leading rusher (7,962yds), Danny Woodhead, finally got his wish.  The ex-Chadron State running back is playing for Bill Callahan.  Sure, it's not at Nebraska, but they are on the same team, the New York Jets.

Nebraska native, Woodhead,  was over-looked again and again by former Nebraska head coach Bill Callahan.  The only team Woodhead wanted to play for was Nebraska, just like all the other kids who play high school football in the state.  Woodhead is 5'7" and from Nebraska .  These were two facts that Callahan couldn't get past.

Bill Callahan was hired by the Jets after getting fired by Dr. Tom Osborne in November '07.  Danny Woodhead signed a free-agent deal with the Jets.  I wonder what Woodhead thinks of Callahan for not giving him a chance and at the same time ruining his favorite team in Nebraska?  Is there any doubt that a running back with 4.38 speed, a vertical of 38.5", and 20 reps of 225lbs will have an impact on a team?  The Jets and the rest of the AFC East will find out soon.

oldsewler,

I'm sorry on two levels about Dan Woodhead... First, I'm sorry someone didn't step out there and draft him in the first place and second, I'm sorry it was the New York Jets that offered him a free agent contract rather than a team that I care about.

Here's wishing Dan good luck!

I know. There is just something about the Jets that I can't put my finger on. I am uninterested in them as well. I'm not surprised that he didn't get drafted. I think this was a running back heavy draft with the likes of McFadden, Rice, Hart, Lewis, etc. I truly believe Woodhead is durable enough to last a while in the NFL. He reminds me of Dave Meggett.

We probably agree that it was best that Danny was NOT drafted.
This allows him to choose the team he wants to try out for.

The Jets aren't known for their rushing game, especially in 2007.

This could be very interesting.

Special teams skills may be the key to making the team.

Who made the decision at the Jets to bring Danny in? With Callahan there do you think he will have an even chance for anything but special teams? I have been on teams where people purposely tried to make you look bad, will Callahan try to do that with Danny? I know that Herchal Walker (spelling probly wrong) had a hard time on the Vikings and I think the coach didn't want him and tried to make him look bad in a host of differnt ways but just when Walkers started to figure each of the new things they threw at him out and started to succeed they would change things up and put him in a different position and when they couldn't keep him from starting to shine they sat him most of the time, that was the only way they could make him look bad consistantly.
Danny is quick enough and will have a nice advantage in that he will be able to hide behind the line and hit holes before the D could see him. The only thing that might hurt him playing is that even though he can catch the ball fairly well he might be too short to be used out of the backfield except for short low throws.
Danny is pretty quick, has a decent verticle but 20 reps at 225 to me is not that impressive as I could do that as a distance runner and wrestler when I weighed 180 and could run sub 5 min miles for up to 14 miles on a good day. I am not sure of what is considered good for the bench in this manner for these workouts for Woodheads position, can you tell me?
What are your thoughts?

getreal, I would like to think that there is nothing personal between Callahan and Woodhead, but you never know. I think he has the potential to make a big impact as a third-down back or punt return specialist.

I wish Danny the best. I know if he had not injured his foot on the 1st offensive play for Chadron when they played Kearny he would have put up More yards and TDs. I think he missed 3 games. Him being a young talented competitive kid should do well if he is given an even chance. I would have liked to have seen him go to a diffent team, but you got to get your foot in the door to have a chance to prove yourself and Danny has done that. Now lets see what that Nebraskan football pride does for him. Football at every level and Nebraska go hand in hand like no other state that I have lived in.

Danny and Bill will get along just fine. You got to remember Bill was hired in Jan. it was Solich that snubbed Danny by the time Bill was hired Danny had already commited to Chadron.

That is true. We know why Solich was shown the door. I wonder if maybe Bill put in a good word for Danny.

Bill Callahan had no interest in signing Danny, Zero! Don't forget Xavier Oman from Beatrice was"overlooked" by this coaching genius as well. Neither of these two worthy backs possessed what Callahan so dearly wanted in a Tail-back, namely a California or Texas zip-code. I truly hope Danny can make the team and prove he belongs in the league, and then gets the hell out of NYC before the media and Billy C. can crush his soul. Personally I wouldn't let Callahan coach placeholders.

Say Olds is it possible that Frank did not go after Danny because he saw the writing on the wall and the direction the AD was going to go come heii or high water and didn't want to put some good back through that. After all in the direction that things went the AD wanted a passing team and Danny wouldn't fit that type of program, he wouldn't have gotten used as much as I think Frank or Osborne would have. Danny may not have gotten as many yards or TD's as he got at Chadron playing at Nebraska but he would have gotten more noteriety at Nebraska. Imagin if he would have done what he did but did it at Nebraska. It would have carried more weight because the name the program has. Even though Chadron has a good name for the level of college ball they play.

Where their other kids that Frank didn't go after that went on to play very well at another college, that would have probly done well in a balanced Husker attack? I think Danny would have done fairly well in a balanced attack or more of a running attack.
