Was drafting Darren McFadden a good pick?
Apr 26, 2008 | 5:35PM | report this

Darren McFadden is a great running back and should be a great player on whatever offense he is added to. However, the Raiders already have Justin Fargas, Lamont Jordan, and Dominic Rhodes. Although the latter two are probably on the way out, Justin Fargas showed talent last year and was Raiders decided to resign him. The other thing that cannot be forgotten is that the Raiders still have Michael Bush. Bush has tremendous upside and potential, but was unable to play in his rookie year due to injuries. Once healthy, Bush has the talent to be a franchise running back. With Fargas and Bush why did the Raiders take McFadden?

I am excited to see McFadden coming to Oakland because of his talent and potential, but I think it would have been smarter to trade up and get some more talent in other places, draft Dorsey, or an offensive lineman because that is where the Raiders are truly weak.

Apparently McFadden was too great of a talent to pass on and the Jamarcus Russell Darren McFadden backfield should be fun to watch.

The Raiders have needs all over the board EXCEPT running back... Their big defensive tackle retires and LSU's Dorsey is still available... The Raiders quit making sense about five years ago and I've given up trying to figure them out...

Maybe they will sit down their QB and the WRs and trot all their RBs out at the same time and play lateral the ball down the field!

Enjoy!

I wasn't too sure if I was too far out of the loop when I heard that Oak had picked Mcfadden, I thought maybe all of the other dozen or so running backs had up and left! But I was wrong and once again the R8ers make a scary first round choice. Looks like we'll waiting for Al to kick the bucket before we see another ring w/ the silver and black. I guess I'll stick to college football for a while longer. Raiders for life... for now GO BRUIN GOLD AND BLUE!

I say Al got a good running back.
How about a nice 'good citizen' clause for that guaranteed money.

there and check if it is just a rumor

Not only is the Raiders' roster in need of somewhat of an overhaul. But so too does their front office. They're all dead from the neck up.
They're in need of a another running back about as much as Pam Anderson is need of breast implants.

I think it was a can't go wrong pick. With Dorsey he would be lookedat to come right in and start and if he couldn't beat out Sands or Warren (both of which arereally good) or even one ofthe other 4 other guys that could possibly play DT then it looks like a bust pick. Not having any other picks in the first 3 rounds really made it the only choice. McFadden can spot play until he is comfortable in the offense and now one of the other HB's could be moved in a trade (highly unlikely unless there is an injury to team unprepared, cuz as is Fargas is the only one that would draw a good trade) I also wonder how many of you are actually posting on here without knowing what moves the Raiders have already made. At DT they have Sands (solid run stopper) Warren and Joseph bot former first round picks at DE they have Burgess and picked up Edwards and Kelly who could move to DT or DE. Whoever is on the fron 4 should benefit from the additions of Hall and Wilson in the defensive backfield forcing QB's to hold the ball longer

Alekzander: you make a good point about the defense and I do agree that the defense has the potential to be good and has the right people in place. However, I agree with ramphantfanatic, the front office is horrible!!!!! They have made some moves through free agency this year that I really like, but Darren McFaddden was the "sexy" pick and they got caught up in the name.

I am an absolute beleiver that Al Davis MUST stay out of the coach's way and let the head coach run the team on the field.

Armchair coaching can be done by my grandfather, father and father-in-law anyday

Vinnie: I completely agree. Al Davis should let Lane Kiffen do his job, however, that will never happen as Al is very controlling and will settle for nothing short of absolute control of the team.

Im personally stoked about the pick...i mean yeah we do need a Glenn Dorsey type but we went to the superbowl a few years ago with a high powered offence and no d so we can do it again pluso ur secondary is unstoppable so who cares if they run for 5 yeards here and there...RUN DMC is a play maker and thats what we need look what AP did for the vikinings plus Walker is still questionable whether he will be any good this year so DMAC gives us another recieving option, Fargas isnt much for catching out of the back feild and deffinately can't line up in a slot. Plus next years draft supposedly is gonna be full of allstar DE's so well get one then RAIDERS

They have Tommy Kelly slated to play Sapp's position, wich means they would have had to put Dorsey at the nose tackle spot. They didn't want to pay #4 pick money for a nose tackle that they didn't really need anyway. Dorsey was not as much of a need for our team as some people think. We have solid players on the D line. The only reason people are talking about our D line is because we got ran on last year. You can't let stats dictate to you what your needs are. The coaching staff and the front office understand where we really have holes. Bottom line, we need to put points on the board, and keep the other teams D on the field so they get tired like our's did last year. San Diego is going to score points, the Patriots are going to score points, and we need to score points. We also have something that we have not had in a long time, a young future stars. JaMarcus Russell and Darren McFadden together is going to be a great thing for the Raiders for years to come. You will see big improvements on both sides of the ball this season, I guarantee that.
