NFL Double Standard?
Aug 13, 2007 | 3:32PM | report this

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has decided to allow Michael Vick to play until the legal case is solved.

Roger Goodell is setting a double standard as he is not punishing Michael Vick because Vick is a star athlete and one of the faces of the league. If it was another player who was facing these same allegations he would have already been suspended.

Goodell realizes that Vick is very marketable and has potential to bring in a lot of money for the NFL.

As for the fact that Vick is not a repeat offender, he does not need to be. Dog fighting is such an obscene crime and if that isn't bad enough, Vick was also accused of electrocuting and hanging his dogs.

Pacman Jones was in questions with local authorities. Michael Vick is in trouble with the feds. Jones was found innocent of some charges while the feds have a 95% conviction rate, showing that Vick is more than likely guilty.

Pacman Jones was suspended before any convictions, but Goodell said that Jones' actions gave the league a bad image. How can he not suspend Vick based on those same standards, is he trying to say that dog fighting is not damaging to the league?

No matter how you look at this issue a double standard is being set, and Michael Vick is not being suspended because he is Michael Vick. If he were not a star player he would already be suspended.

Goodell has been very inconsistent in his iron fisted approach to commishing. Pacman, suspended for the year, but we'll look at it after 10, but you cant participate in camp or preseason. Yet Chris Henry caught a TD in the Bengals preseason opener. Then will have to go serve his eight games,Tank you are suspended....oohhhh sorry you were not guilty, just stupid,no crime there, should be though.Sorry for that rush to judgement.

People are talking about how much Mike Vick owes the NFL, who owes whom? They are just as vested in Vick as he is in them. They and the Blanks have made millions on his play and highlight, merchandise, and jerseys. So yes because Vick is a star and earns so much for the Falcons and the league he is being considered for "reinstatement" even though he was never suspended officially.

It's not a double standard, because no standard has been set. Goodell is just as toothless as the others. In a perfect world a years suspension is just that;one whole season, you dont review after 10 or 4 or any. So when he put that provision is he played himself.

Federal case or not he is just as afraid, if not more that Vick will be aquitted, than Vick is of being suspended. If he suspendeds Vick or allows the Falcons to cut him he will be roasted by the media and the fans, whose outrage seems to be media induced, and he is just hedging his bets right now.

If he wants to clean up this league he needs to get off the fence and wield that flaming sword he claims to have.

I agree with you to an extent. I think the key phrase you used was this...Jone was found innocent of "SOME" charges. Mike Vick has not been found guilty of anything yet. Do I think that Vick should be supsended...yes, until the case is through. But not for the reasons you think... First of all, I think if Michael Vick was to play for the Falcons he would be a huge distraction. I also heard today that he may not play at all this season, but the NFL has come out and said it did not make that statement. But, I am sure that is where they are heading and someone leaked it out early. I think Vick should be found guilty before we make our minds up. I think that he did have involvement, but to what extent I am not sure.

Anyway,Jones and Vick will be suspended for this season. It is just a matter of days until we here it about Vick.

Great Blog! Makes a person think...

If this is true, I'm still not ready to get on Goodell's case, yet. There may be reasons and circumstances we don't know about as to why he is treating different players differently. Goodell has much more info than we do on these players, what they have done, the circumstances of the arrests, charges and convictions. For now I'm still glad that Goodell is certainly cracking down on criminal players more than any other commissioner, by far.
