I know everyone says he is greedy and selfish, but, he was OFFERED the huge dollars! This guy is one of the best players out there and has been for quite a while. I watched him as a teenager in Seattle and was blown away at his pure talent. I hated seeing him leave for texas but they OFFERED him that huge contract and Seattle couldn't afford that! Granted that killed Texas but whose fault is that? A-rod? I think not-he didn't demand that money texas OFFERED it to him!
This guy hit 170 HR's and over 500 RBI's in NY alone! If he is so greedy name me another athlete that said " Oh I couldn't possibley take that much money for playing a game! Please cut my pay in half!" I can't think of a single one!
Also shame on you Yankee fans for not appreciating what a great player he has been for you. You sure seemed to like him this year because you couldn't cheer for anyone else on your team!
And before you start about his post season slumps lets not forget HE IS the reason you even had a post season, where was Jeter and the rest of the team?
Just mellow Montanan thought and I am curious what everybody else thinks about A-rod.
Thanks for reading and your input is always welcome!
Seriously though, I don't hate the guy, I hate his agent. I don't want him on my team for the money he will demand. It will (at least in private) create friction with other players. The Red Sox years ago were noted as 25 ball players that took 25 different cabs to the ball park. Not anymore. I don't want to do anything to change that.
I'm an Oriole fan who would welcome A-Rod with open arms. I want my team to succeed. Having the best player in baseball should help. People hate A-Rod for the reason you mentioned. There are people much more deserving of the fans' ire. Try Roger Clemens and his $2 million per start on for size. How about Sammy Sosa's $16 million as an Oriole? At least A-Rod earns it.
He reminds me of Kobe. People are awed by his skills, but hate on him at the same time. I joke about A-Rod a lot, but I actually like him as a player and will miss seeing him in pinstripes. Mainly, I think it's the money. It's hard to fathom a guy making that much and not being evil in some way, so people instinctively hate on him. Just a theory...

The inate hate of A-Rod is that he fails to deliver when it matters most. And whilst what has happened with the Yankees this year all can't be placed upon his shoulders. He's never proven himself to be nothing but a spectacular player in the regular season. A bust in the postseason and what has even more telling. He's not a leader ! He's never been the one who'll go out there and say to his teammates...'let's go out there and kick some as$'.
It's never been in his nature and much like the rest of that Yankees' roster he's soft as butter.
You even see it in his physicalities as akin to his bust up with Varitek. He punches like a female and no doubt squats to take a pi#s.

I just wrote a post about A-Rod possibly coming to the Tigers, my favorite team.
Obviously he's one of the best to play the game. But after he left Seattle and Texas, those teams didn't get much worse. If he would have won anything it might be worth the gamble, but he hasn't won a thing yet.
I just don't know if he puts any team over the top, he hasn't done it yet.
A-ROD AS A SQUATER TOO FUNNY TOP! Maybe he's never had the chance to be a leader! In seattle that was Griffey's team, in Texas it was pointless and in NY was Jeter! Maybe with a new team he will become that leader!? I just think hes too talented to get this kind of bad mouthing! Thats just what I think though, and what do I know!
Thanks for stopping by Top! As always love to hear your input!

Well tophat, captain deuce is supposed to be Mr Yankee. A-Rod was pigeonholed as a mercenary from day one with that club. As far as postseason stats, A-Rod posted a .353 OBP and had good seasons with the Mariners. Not all postseasons break your way. Sometimes, you hit into three double plays in a series. Of course, we don't know of any Yankees who actually did that, do we?
Hey Hoit great to hear from ya! I know what you are saying about not winning the big one but because of him-he can get you there! You need more than just a big bat as we all know but 50+ HR and 150 RBI's doesnt hurt any ball club.
A-rod is the perfect example of a hi-stat,low-impact player. He has never helped any team he has ever been on.The Yankees would have had the same record if Pedro Feliz was playing 3rd.
A-Rod's 50 HR and 150 RBI were only in his head. Did the scoreboard operator fall asleep for those? Does the FOX graphics department only count the runs driven in by Posada? Maybe that's why the Yanks lost the AL East this year. Nobody bothered to put all those selfish runs on the board.

He was brought in by the Yankees to provide 'em with what was needed for the postseason. Suffice to say he just couldn't prove that he had wjhat it takes for his baptism of fire in the cauldron known as a Yankees' postseason.

Who says that he has to play second fiddle to Jeter ? The problem being is that you never see Jeter be voiciferous with anyone on his team. He leads by example but a lot of the time his teammates are either too slow or dumb to take the initiative. They obiviously long for the days of Brosius and O'Neill.
But you can't tell Yankees' fan that or they'll bite your fu*kin' head off !
I hate him for a couple reasons, and it really doesn't have much to do with him being a Yankee. Acting like a punk in the 2004 ALCS trying to slap the ball out of a pitcher's glove, yelling at a third baseman during a pop-up to get him to drop the ball are kinda reasons I think he is a little punk. I thank him for going to the Yankees and helping them blow the last few seasons. I just really hope the Red Sox don't sign him because I'd rather have a player with more character than a little bit better stats. Hmm, Mike Lowell comes to mind.

I feel sorry for people who feel this was about A-Rod. The guy is a decent man, and if he was not what every thought he was, then why were the Yanks trying to offer him 252 million to stay?
Jeter and the rest of the team are the ones you Yanks fans should be most upset with. All of the team seem to not be producing, and it is a team sport, so the responsibility does not just fall on A-Rods shoulders. Not only that, but I cannot imagine having the Dictator Steinbrenner as an owner. The Yankees lost the best thing they had....Joe Torre!
I am with you btroup! Please A-Rod come to Baltimore. We would all be ecstatic to have you!
You know I'm a Seattle fan, but I'm weaning myself off of the Mariners. I've gotta hand it to the Seattle fans, they keep supporting the M's even when it appears the management won't make the one or two moves to put them over the top (last season is a case in point)...
Concerning A-Rod, I saw him come to Seattle right after he became a Ranger. People in the upper deck littered the field with what looked like monopoly money. It was something watching the fake bills twirl their way across the field every time he came to bat.
Really, though, I couldn't blame Alex. If someone is willing to pay that kind of money to a baseball player he'd be a fool to refuse. I just wonder where he's going to go this time around (who the highest bidder will be).

why i dont like push-rod. let me count the whys. 1}i'm a red sox fan 2}i like watching their players out there play hard and having fun in the process. 3}attitude is a big part of the game i think and he has a bad one. his attitude stinks and he would change the whole nucleus of the red sox dougout.from a champ to a chimp outfit. the young guys coming in will think "this is how i'm suppose to act to make the big buck" bulls..t. pedroia, ellsbury would be finished with that attitude in boston.they'd suvive in n.y. but not boston.he's a great hitter but this swelling thing going on in his head,he'd be better to be a macey's day float.jeter hurt them this year but yank fans have grown to love him and i can't figure that out either.he makes two errors in a game and they know the reason that happened and it wasn't jeter.headline:jeter singles in the fifth and scores yanks win 10 to 2.thanks to jeter"s only hit in the fifth as he saved the yanks from losing two in a row.struck out three time,a single in the fifth and he's the hero.i've said it before the postseason torre's gonna take the over paid spoiled brats with him to the post instead of the young guns that got them there.he did and the outcome was as i saw it.unless his attitude changes and i doubt it ever will the're will be that hate.and don't forget reason #1

I don't think anybody in America would say:
"Oh, that's too much money, go back and tell them I should get less so I don't seem greedy"
Professional sports is a business, and Scott Boras is a master of manipulation within that business.
A-Rod is one of the greatest players of all-time. People shouldn't blame A-Rod, they should blame the system that has created the huge salaries in pro-sports. Now with that being said, baseball could certainly use a salary cap. In the mean time, you can't fault the A-Rod's of the world for cashing in on a pay-day. Anyone that says they wouldn't, is a liar.
A-Rod has the great skills, nobody doubts that. But its the precieved coldness to his teammates, and the contract. Yeah, nobody would turn down that contract, but when you sign that big of a contract, big things are expected of you. It can't be ignored that while he puts up large numbers in the regular season, he comes up very small in the post season. Also, the seeming arrogance that he has, but how none of his teammates seem to want to take his back when all the criticisms were thrown at him does speak loudly. Maybe time will help him. Roberto Clemente was considered to be a malecontent and hypochodriac during his day, and Ted Williams was known to be a miserable human being during his playing days. Both are universally loved now and days, and maybe it might be the same for A-Rod some day.
All this coldness talk about A-Rod and lack of toughness is meaningless. If you really watch A-Rod play he gets after it every game, plays with passion, and plays hard. Just cause he doesn't sit in the dugout and cut up doesn't mean he's a bad teammate. And all of the people that sit and point the finger at a guy who in his contract had the option to be a free agent, the same one that hundreds of other pro athletes have opted out of, would do the same dang thing. More power to a-rod and I hope my team signs him. Great post.
Tophat wrote "Who says that he has to play second fiddle to Jeter ? The problem being is that you never see Jeter be voiciferous with anyone on his team. Jeter leads by example, and that translates to calm, cool eyed, and leaderlike. A-Rod does the same and it's callous, selfish, and coldhearted. This is the problem. I keep hearing about how he was brought in to produce in the postseason. He had a .353 OBP in the ALDS. One doesn't just magically become a .700 OBP guy simply because the calendar flips. He did the things that got the Yanks to October in the first place. He was worth 13 wins to his ballclub. In his BEST year, Brosius was worth 6. The Yanks won the WC by six games. Go ahead, long for the days of Brosius, and watch the ALDS instead.
VB I agree with you name a team that wouldn't want this guy-granted the money is rediculious, but if these teams offer him that kind of money why is it his fault for taking it? Thanks for your input as always great to hear from you!
dwindy thanks for stopping by, my guess is that a-rod will be a cubbbie back with Lou Pinella of in Bean town replace Lowell or maybe in L.A. back with Torre but ultimatly who knows but those are my thoughts on it
pete thanks for your thoughts...I agree completely. Is it HIS fault these teams offer him that crazy money?!?! Granted his agent may be the devil! thanks for stopping by.
sport.... THANK YOU!!!! The guy is one of the greatest players of our time, people tend to forget he is a gold glove winner!! Thanks for your comments.
I totally agree with you on this. I'm always telling people, he was offered the contract and he was smart enough to take it. You don't say no to something like that. I love A-Rod and I'm sad to see him leave the Yankees. I was really hoping he'd stick around. Oh well, I guess it's time to move one.
A-Rod, like Bonds, might not be the most personable MLB player, but also like Bonds, he puts up the numbers to go with his arrogant attitude. I think most people are just jealous that these guys make big bucks, and can get away with being jerks. However, you can't fault A-Rod for having the best agent around, who can get him megabucks. I think people just expect $100million+ to get you more World Series victories and championships. However, baseball is still a team sport, and no matter how bad the individual does, there are still 8 other players on the field have to contribute too. It's rare that a single player takes a team in his shoulders and leads them to a victory all on his while his mediocre teammates ride the gravy train.

What has cool calm and collective gotten them for the last six seasons ? Absolutely nothing !
It's not A-Rod who's dictating theb terms in this respectn it's his agent Scott Boras. And one should remember also that the only reason the Yankees didn't want A-Rod to opt out of his contract is that any renegotiation would to them not getting that subsidized benefit of the Rangers still paying in part a considerable part of A-Rod's salary.
Machaviellian wheeling's and dealings of Boras will make sure that some team will indeed be willing to pay his client in excess of $150-$200m over the next five to ten years dependent upon the length of a contract negiotiated.
not everyone hates "payrod". if he wasn't in the sport for the money, and could do something in the post season, everyone would love him. but, his main priority is $$$$$$$$$$$$$$, and he pretty much sucked in the post season.
Perhaps it's not A-Rod we hate so much as the fact that he's making all that money. And has nothing tangible to show for it in the terms of silverware that really matters. Like say a World Series ring or postseason MVP award. But who's counting ?
It's now all about the money for A-Rod and his agent Scott Boras.

I understand he was offered the huge dollars, but Texas was not the only one offering it to him, they were just offering the most. My problem is that he is a sell out. The year prior to entering free agency when he was with Seattle, he kept preaching that it wasn't about the money, he wanted to play for a contender, blah blah blah, but what happens?? He goes and plays for a team that had spent the previous 4+ years in the AL West cellar. Why?? 2 reasons. They offered him the most money, and it is a hitters ballpark. Opposite of what he kept preaching. Here is what makes him selfish; He left Seattle because they would not move the fences at Safeco in for him. He then went to a basement dweller for the most money in a hitters park so he could pad his stats. Other contention teams were offering him very good money, but not one that would allow him to pad his stats like Texas. They spend soo much money on him they didn't have any left to even attempt to make Texas a winner. #### is lucky that the Yuckees spend money like it's going out of style to get him there, otherwise he still would not be playing for a contender. Good thing it was a hitters park too, otherwise he probably would have nixed it. He is nothing but a used car salesman, telling people what they want to hear and doing the opposite. Everyone says he's greedy and selfish because it's the TRUTH!!
i hate a=rod because of what he did to seattle years ago. just for money and i mean a lot of money he made the situation hard for seatttle to trade him by announcing that he will not sign with any team that trade for him. i understand baseball is a business but that is unforgivable.

I guess you're no doubt waitin' to see what Santa Mitchell will be all giving us for an early Christmas present as of today ?
It'll no doubt be fun to see what he'll have in his little bag of tricks or should one say book ?
Funny though if it ends up without Bonds' name being amongst the names named. What'll the league do then ? Egg on their faces won't begin to explain half of it !
See my latest post titled I Take From The Needy To Give To The Greedy But At Least I Don't Pocket The Dough !
Let me know what you think as to the merits of the piece ?
I'll look forward to reasding your comments.
I was born and raised in Billings Mt and moved after H.S. I lived in Seattle for 17 years and moved back here to Montana 5 years ago and miss all those Seattle teams! GO SEAHAWKS Turn ons: anytime the yankees lose! Damn the evil empire!!! I also am a huge fan of one of the greatest pure hitters of our time Edgar Martinez! HOF no question in my mind. Oh theres also that other Seattle hitter, I think his name is ICHIRO or something like that!
