What happened to the classy athelete??
Oct 17, 2007 | 8:56AM | report this

Last night I was watching the sox-tribe game and once again Manny being Manny hit a bomb to right center field and stand there for 30 seconds with his hands in the air starring at his home run.  Now I'm all for the long ball but that is pretty unsportsman like, especially in someone else's park to show up the pitcher and other team and fans!  I am surprised someone hasn't earholed him in this post season.  He does it everytime he hits a home run!

What ever happened to just doing your job, put your head down and run the bases?  I know little leagures that dont do that and they aren't getting paid millions of dollars to "act" like a professional!  I like the bosox and I'm not trying to call just Manny out for this,  plenty of others are guilty as well.  Just a little rant and curious to see what everyone else thinks about this.  I think its embarrassing but what do I know-just a laid back Montanan!

No need to pat Manny on the back, he's too busy doing it himself.

Aren't we supposed to blame ESPN for the current state of sports and athletes? Everyone thinks it's all ESPNs fault, wrong.

To answer your question, I think the classy athlete retired when guys like David Robinson, Joe Dumars, Barry Sanders, and Cal Ripken retired. Too bad.

Using the term "classy" and Manny Ramairez in the same sentence is an oxymoron. And speaking of ####'s...Manny should be fined every time he stops to admire his hit...to me this is the same as taunting in football. When Manny was in Cleveland he was known as Manny "no hustle" and I see he is still at it...if the ball isn't hit directly to him in the outfield we are sure to get a double out of it because he does not attempt to run and get it. Also, when base running...he stands and waits to see if it goes out of the park so he doesn't have to break a sweat running.
Manny is the laziest player I have ever seen and I am tired of FOX blowing smoke about how smart he is...another oxymoron.

hoit you'd think he'd dislocated his shoulder patting himself on the back....must be double jointed! I agree where have all the good guys gone! My favorite was/is Edgar Martinez! You never saw him do anything like that. thanks for the feed back.

Classy athletes went the way of the teradactyl. They've become extinct and now like the rest of society it's now become about the money and the notoriety if nothing else.

I'm with you here man... Manny drives me insane. He is classless and I have said it many times to the locals up here in MA about him. What cracks me up is that he does it on the road and in a game where they are down by 4 runs still even after he hits it. You can celebrate, but don't stand there... run it out and play the game.

Classy athletes are still around, we just don't hear about them. They don't make headlines, unfortuantely.

I saw something Saturday that I've seen a many times and it drives me up a wall. I forget which college game it was, but some linebacker made a pretty good hit on a runngng back after a SEVEN YARD GAIN. The linebacker's team was down by ten points late in the third quarter at the time. Of course the LB gets up and wags his finger at the opposing sideline and starts flexing his muscles. At which time I'm saying to myself, "Dude, get back to the freakin' huddle. . . ."

I'll never understand, I guess.

Too right, great post, i thought exactly the same thing watching the game last night. If it was bottom of the ninth in game 7 then fine celebrate all you like, but with your team losing and continuing to lose, maybe Manni thought it was all he was going to have left to celebrate this post-season....

I'm flat-out sick of hearing the phrase "Manny Being Manny." I'm tired of announcers slobbering all over everything he does as if he were the greatest player ever. The Red Sox can't get eliminated soon enough in my opinion.

Ah, the old "morality in sports" lecture. All I'll say is that morals are relative, not absolute.

I don't care if Manny Ramirez, or anyone else, decides to gawk at a home run, or taunt after a strikeout, or what have you.

Baseball is entertainment to us fans. So leave it at that. Let the NFL players do their celebrations, let the MLB players marvel at their home runs, and stop trying to legislate morality.

I love homeruns touchdowns etc. But when they act like they did something thats never been done before, also something they are getting paid to do and are expected to do by the way, no need to act like an ####, just my feelings but thanks for our input!

Ultra, where in this article do you read he was trying to give us a lecture on morality? I feel he was just trying to say, down by 5 runs and gawking at his homerun wasn't done with much taste. In other words "classless". And maybe to some fans (me included) it wasn't much "entertainment".

Manny is a Nit-Wit and does'nt realize what he did was wrong. This is not even a top 10 Manny brain -####. Great hitter but not a real bright guy. This is the same guy that went inside the scoreboard of the green monster to take a #### while he was playing left feild DURING an opposing players at bat.

Just Manny being Manny, lighten up

Manny Ramirez is the perfect example of why the DH is bad for baseball. When all you do is hit (granted, he does it well) it's because (in his case, IMO)his fielding and base running skills are terrible. If it weren't for the AL and the lame DH Ramirez would be seen for what he is: overrated.

No one said all ath-e-letes were smart.

That HR showboating shows he's a d-ouche.
I laughed at him, not with him.
Back 2 - Back 2- Back and a whole three runs were scored in the game.

Go Small Market Teams!

Think of how the East Coasters will whine about night games played in the Mountain(that would be Denver) time zone. A major sports writer will write a whiny post. I guarantee it.

good post here. There are some classy athletes but they never get noteriety. P.J. Brown in the NBA is one of them. Manny is an #### and the good thing is when he's gone he'll be just that gone. nobody will talk about him like we do other athletes of the past. That's the best thing about him, he's not good enough to remember.

onesouthernlion, Manny Ramirez isn't a DH.

Ultra, where in this article do you read he was trying to give us a lecture on morality?

The whole thing is a condemnation of athletes who have a little fun with the game.

As for morals, here's how the dictionary defines them:

of, pertaining to, or concerned with the principles or rules of right conduct or the distinction between right and wrong; ethical

There you go. Dictionary.com is your friend.

mtmarinerfan,

How ya doin? Hangin in after the Seahawks fiasco last Sunday? Man I'm tired of that brand of football.

Anyway... I notice you've got Ichiro Suzuki on your avatar. Now there's a class act! Seems like all of the Japanese stars in MLB are full of class! Must be a cultural thing, you know, the ugly American... In the old days Manny would be laid out after one episode like what he pulled last night. Not anymore...

I think it boils down to individuals. Manny was being Manny, but he is far from the only one that shows up people. Couldn't you say the same about Jhonny Peralta raising his fist after his homerun? What is classy and what isn't? It all comes down to who the individual is and what their values are. Now Manny's pose was rather ridiclous. But, he is far from the only one does it. I just don't offended by it, because if I did everytime somebody admire their shot, I would be pissed 162 times a year plus playoffs.

here's how the dictionary defines:
OPINION
"a belief or judgment that rests on grounds insufficient to produce complete certainty."

Just his "opinion" not a moral lecture.

People can define classy in many ways. Let's look at Barry Sanders. He scores a touchdown, and gives the ball to the ref. Classy? Most people would say yes. But that is a classy ACT. Is he really a classy PERSON? Didn't he walk away from a contract becuase management didn't run the team the way he saw fit? How classy is that?

Babe Ruth used to do a lot of good for needy children. He also binged on vices including the occasional hooker. For every Cal Ripken, there's a Ty Cobb. For every Jim Abbot, there's a Bob Gibson.

Sports are a lot like SNL casts. The greatest era for both was when you were in college, and dammit, it's just not the same anyomore.

Look the behavior we see from these athletes is indicative of what we see within society. And who's to say what's actually right from wrong when we've got politicians and members of the church who feel that they can flout the laws of the land and not be answerable to anyone.
What's Manny doing that we supposedly find offensive ? He's not spitting at the opposition or berating officials. He's merely enjoying himself and entertaining the fans. Isn't that what we want to see from the players above all.

Change your avatar after I mentioned Ichiro... Edgar was a class act too. Someday maybe the old so and so's who vote for the baseball Hall of Fame will remove some of the SHAME and put Edgar in his rightful place among the greatest hitters in the game!

Hang in.

I completely agree. Manny acted like a clown, admiring his homerun, when his team was down by 3 runs. I could understand or tolerate what he did, if he had tied or one the game, but arrogance is arrogance and I'm not a fan of that.

PS That's a great pic of Edgar, the original "Papi".

mtmarinerfan,

Sorry about just now getting here, busy week, but I want to say that Cal Ripken to me was one of the last true good guys in the MLB. Athletes like Manny seem to be a dime a dozen lately. Do they now send them to school to earn an ego degree?

My 17 year old son and I got into a little heated argument the other day, because while he was practicing they decided to play Home Run Derby. Well sure enough he hit a beautiful HR, but what does he do??? Stands there acting cocky. I know I should have cut him some slack being it was just HRD, but he has been playing baseball since he was 4 years old. And even before that he would pick up a Lego and a plastic golf club or anything else he could find and swing away. The Boy is baseball, and I just do not want to see him buy too much into himself! Yes he is in his Senior year of HS, he is also is a Captain on the Varsity Team and as his Mom I am extremely proud of him, but I just want him to stay grounded.

So your article here makes me feel a bit better. I just wish egos would take a back seat to the game!

Great job!

I agree with the earholing. Back in the day, pitchers and teams didn't put up with a hitter standing there, showing up the pitcher after a homer. Some pitchers like Bob Gibson would earhole you after a homer, even if they didn't show him up.

It's hard nowadays to get away with earholing, and you don't want to lose any quality pitchers to suspensions for throwing beanballs. However, I think any manager with a set of balls, would send his mop-up pitcher in to throw a payback pitch, and then pay for his and his pitcher's fine and suspension.

Pitching is tough enough without having to be constrained by the league from throwing payback pitches. Yes, back in the day, it was just as unsafe and illegal as it is now. However, back then, the hitters respected the pitcher, and the game in general was a tougher sport with some thick-skinned guys.
