I call this the Question of the Day. I may or may not have one EVERYDAY, but I will try to keep up on it, lol!
So here goes....
Is there anyone else that reads Gilbert Arenas' blog?
Seriously, I look for it every two weeks, but I check every few days just in case he sneaks one in, lol. I find them to be very amusing, informative, and at times ridiculous.Overall, it helped me view him as a complete person and not just an athlete.
After reading this latest one, I wanted to pose this question:
Does knowing more about an athlete's personal life make a difference in how you view them as a player?
Now for the lengthy qualification of my answer, I believe that your personal life is just that “personal”. Most celebrities are held to code of conduct that most people cannot conform to. This is because the media is out for a story that will shock and sell.
None of us like having our dirty laundry shown in public, and we all have it! I look at an athlete or celebrity as I would a car or a book, what do they do for me? Do they give me entertainment, satisfaction, or enjoyment? Live and let live!
I might like or dislike certain players more if I know some aspects of their personal lives, but I don't view them as better or worse athletes based on it.
Although this is not my sport, I do have a general comment.Anytime a fan has 'inside information' about the person behind the 'star' they feel they 'know' them better.
To the point where fanaticism creates stalkers.(in extreme cases)
It makes the player/singer/driver/etc. 'more real'
even your 'friend'. Why would you think those 'strangers' could play/sing/drive better than your 'friend' that you know and love?
(and some fans tend to be more forgiving when their 'friend' messes up)
Not all fans feel this way I was just trying to show one side of the personalization that private knowledge can create.
