Gold Stars: NFL Draft Edition
Apr 28, 2008 | 8:57PM | report this

This weekend’s NFL Draft featured a number of similarities when compared to drafts of the past. As always, there were a boatload of trades and a plethora of surprise picks.

For me, there were a number of teams who came through with solid drafts. In particular, I’m handing out gold stars to the five teams listed below, in my NFL Draft edition of “Gold Stars”.

Gold Stars – Volume II – NFL Draft 2008

Please note: All picks state the round first, then the overall spot which the player was taken.

Kansas City Chiefs

Many of the critics are giving the Chiefs high marks for their draft. I’m joining in on that fun, and there are plenty of reasons why. Here’s the list of the new Chiefs:

1 (005) – Glenn Dorsey – DT – LSU
1 (015) – Branden Albert – OG – Virginia
2 (035) – Brandon Flowers – CB – Virginia Tech
3 (073) – Jamaal Charles – RB – Texas
3 (076) – Brad Cottam – TE – Tennessee
3 (082) – DaJuan Morgan – S – North Carolina State
4 (105) – William Franklin – WR – Missouri
5 (140) – Brandon Carr – CB – Grand Valley State
6 (170) – Barry Richardson – OT – Clemson
6 (182) – Kevin Robinson – WR – Utah State
7 (210) – Brian Johnston – DE – Gardner Webb
7 (239) – Mike Merritt – TE – Central Florida

When you’re a team with major holes to fill, the wise choice would be to start in the trenches. That’s exactly what the Chiefs did, and they did so in grand fashion by taking two of the most talented in the draft, LSU’s Glenn Dorsey and OG Branden Albert from Virginia. The Chiefs also managed to snag the talented Brandon Flowers for their secondary, as well as former Texas Longhorn Jamaal Charles to help out the running game. Still, the gem here is Dorsey, the former LSU star who despite being double teamed all season, managed seven sacks and 12 ½ tackles for a loss throughout LSU’s national championship run.

Washington Redskins

Wasn’t it a little strange seeing Washington’s name pop up so many times on the draft board? I think so. Either way, the ‘Skins took advantage of the opportunities they had, with a number of solid additions. Here’s the list:

2 (034) – Devin Thomas – WR – Michigan State
2 (048) – Fred Davis – TE – USC
2 (051) – Malcolm Kelly – WR – Oklahoma
3 (096) – Chad Rinehart – OG – Northern Iowa
4 (124) – Justin Tryon – CB – Arizona State
6 (168) – Durant Brooks – P – Georgia Tech
6 (180) – Kareem Moore – S – Nicholls State
6 (186) – Colt Brennan – QB – Hawaii
7 (242) – Rob Jackson – DE – Kansas State
7 (249) – Christopher Horton – S – UCLA

The Redskins had a great draft for a number of reasons. OK, so they seemed to ignore the D-line need again, but the big targets at WR were added. It was a need after falling short in trading for Cincinnati’s Chad Johnson. In recent weeks, the talk on the Washington Post website was the ‘Skins looking at Malcolm Kelly with the 21st pick, stating that Devin Thomas would not fall to them. Not only did Washington manage to select both receivers, but the Redskins also were able to trade out of the 21st slot for additional picks, and still get both players. That alone points to a successful draft. In addition to that accomplishment, Washington had a few other intriguing picks, including arguably the best punter in college last year (Durant Brooks), as well as Colt Brennan. Sure, Brennan got beaten up by Georgia on the national stage. He also wasn’t impressive in the Senior Bowl. He also has said to have iffy form. All that aside, he has the character, a ton of records, and has worked with a former NFL coach in June Jones. All in all, it makes him an intriguing late round pick by the ‘Skins.

Baltimore Ravens

Another draft, another Ravens team searching for an impact QB. OK, so maybe it doesn’t happen every year, but it sure seems like it. I was impressed with Baltimore’s draft for a number of reasons. Here’s the list:

1 (018) – Joe Flacco – QB – Delaware
2 (055) – Ray Rice – RB – Rutgers
3 (071) – Tavares Gooden – ILB – Miami (FLA)
3 (086) – Tom Zbikowski – S – Notre Dame
3 (099) – Oniel Cousins – OG – UTEP
4 (106) – Marcus Smith – WR – New Mexico
4 (133) – David Hale – OT – Weber State
6 (206) – Haruki Nakamura – S – Cincinnati
7 (215) – Justin Harper – WR – Virginia Tech
7 (240) – Allen Patrick – RB – Oklahoma

With Steve McNair retiring, the Ravens desperately were seeking a top QB. If not Matt Ryan, then it was going to be Delaware’s Joe Flacco, featuring a towering 6’6” frame and powerful arm. While I think the Ravens may have traded up a little high (in a panic) to get Flacco, I still think this could pan out to be a solid “un-Boller-like” selection. Next, there’s RB Ray Rice from Rutgers. I loved watching this kid play in college. Sure, scouts say he may not have the size, but man he runs hard. Like a bull, and I think he’ll be a fine addition as well. Finally, I can’t help but admit that Tom Zbikowski, the former Notre Dame safety, also sticks out in my mind. He can play special teams, he has speed, he hits hard, and he’s smart. He should be a great fit with the Ravens. All in all, a solid draft for the men in purple.

Carolina Panthers

I think the Panthers addressed some needs for sure, and got some solid value in a number of their slots. In a year where John Fox will be under a microscope more than ever, here’s their list of new additions:

1 (013) – Jonathan Stewart – RB – Oregon
1 (019) – Jeff Otah – OT – Pittsburgh
3 (067) – Charles Godfrey – CB – Iowa
3 (074) – Dan Connor – ILB – Penn State
5 (141) – Gary Barnidge – TE – Louisville
6 (181) – Nick Hayden – DT – Wisconsin
7 (221) – Hilee Taylor – OLB – North Carolina
7 (241) – Geoff Schwartz – OT – Oregon
7 (250) – Mackenzy Bernadeau – OG – Bentley

I admit when trading up, I thought the Panthers may have given up too much. Still, they were aggressive and filled needs, and you can’t fault them for that. Jeff Otah was listed as one of the better linemen in the draft, and should eventually help Carolina with their running game. As for former Oregon Duck RB Jonathan Stewart, call me crazy, but I think he could have a better career than Darren McFadden. Finally, I want to mention former Penn State LB Dan Connor, who was originally projected as a late first round pick. Instead, he fell to the third round, where Carolina gets great value, and a guy with great instincts. I think Connor will go on to excel in the NFL, just like former teammate Paul Posluszny began to do before a freak arm injury last season.

New York Jets

After a major drop off from a solid 2006 season, the Jets needed to improve in a big way. And on paper, it certainly looks like they may have done that. We’ll see how this crop does, but here’s New York’s solid list:

1 (006) – Vernon Gholston – DE – Ohio State
1 (030) – Dustin Keller – TE – Purdue
4 (113) – Dwight Lowery – CB – San Jose State
5 (162) – Erik Ainge – QB – Tennessee
6 (171) – Marcus Henry – WR – Kansas
7 (211) – Nate Garner – OT – Arkansas

Sure, the Jets didn’t have as many picks as the other teams mentioned above, but they picked quite well with what they had available to them. The pick most intriguing to me is Dustin Keller, former TE from Purdue. Scouts say he lacks in size and blocking ability, but I think this guy is underrated. He has 4.5 speed for a tight end, coupled with great hands. With that alone, he could cause some nightmares and tough matchups for opponents. He should be a solid weapon for the Jets passing game. In addition to Keller, I think Vernon Gholston could end up being a very talented defensive end in the NFL. I think both he and Dorsey could have solid careers. Finally, the Erik Ainge pick intrigues me. He is a solid QB for a fifth round pick, and he certainly has the size at 6’5”. Who knows, maybe he could climb the depth charts. The Jets certainly need a QB to step to the forefront. Hey, Tom Brady did it.

There you have it, five teams that personally jumped out at me during this year’s NFL Draft. Certainly, I liked some other picks in the draft such as the Steelers stealing Mendenhall late and the Cowboys adding speedster back Felix Jones, among others. Still, the five above teams in particular had unique moves, situations, or multiple picks that I felt could pan out or add some value. Feel free to pitch in your thoughts on the draft, and who you personally would give a gold star too.

This has been “Gold Stars”, and that’s a wrap for another NFL Draft. When is kickoff?

Spot on! Hey Fred davis, the TE is a huge pick! He's undervalued, as one Booty's primary receiver...he made those incredible one hand catches on his back, and he can block...he's the next Antonio Gates.

Yeah, the Chiefs did great...they needed to load up...I have questions about Flowers' character...look for him to be a future cellmate for some Bengals. :( it's just a hunch mind, you, but remember I said that.

Where have you been? We missed you!

Great scribble, Flacco is doomed no 1st round QB taken 11-32 has ever made a Pro-Bowl let alone sniffed a Super Bowl in the past 20 years, the Skins had their best draft since flushing Spurrier and Gibbs down whatever drain they crawled out of and them's the facts Jack...

Not sure about taking two players at the same position for Wash. Throw in a TE and it's going to get confusing.

Dallas taking Jones when Mendenhall was still on the board was confusing. Why take a situational back when you have a complete one out there still. Steelers had a really good draft too. I wonder what they will do with Dixon? Good stuff KP.

LISE,
Gates-like huh? Wow, that's a bold prediction. Can I hold you to that one? I think that Keller kid (NYJ) is going to be better than people think. He is going to cause matchup problems.
I'll keep this one to see how accurate you are on Flowers and Davis.
Life has been hectic. I'm back for a while though now... hopefully.

ED,
Interesting stat. But c'mon now, there's a first time for everything! Maybe Flacco can break that little stat! Speaking of breaking stats, how is Favre going to be jinxed this year when he has "retired", yet still is on the Madden cover?
As for the 'Skins... Spurrier sure, but c'mon now, Gibbs is a legend... you're killin' me!

EDMONS,
Solid points. Still, I get the Felix Jones pick. He is the compliment to Marion Barber, and I think he is going to be better than Julius Jones was. Besides, I think Jerry Jones is an Arkansas guy, so he had to go with the homer pick.
The Steelers did have a solid draft, I agree. I almost included them on here, but wanted to be a little different. They made some interesting selections, but in some cases, more for depth than guys stepping right in...

I can understand the pick, but I don't understand the pick. You know? If Barber goes down, they will be kicking themselves. Besides, isn't he wanting a huge pay increase? Wouldn't it make sense to take Mendenhall just in case he decides to walk or holdout.

EDMONS,
I'm with you, I can definitely see both sides of it. I am guessing a lot of the scouts and draft experts are thinking the same thing considering that Mendenhall was originally slated to go much earlier, therefore saying "Hey Dallas is going to take Felix Jones, but Mendenhall will be off the board". Dallas likes that one-two punch... I bet Jones being an Arkansas guy has more to do with it, which it shouldn't... you know?

By the way, running the West Coast, the 'Skins want more offensive weapons and big targets. I get taking both... plus hey, the law of percentages right? You hope one pans out or maybe both and you can deal away Moss (or just realize that Moss is likely to get hurt at some point)

SODACAN,
Thanks for stopping by, OK give me your thoughts on the Rams. Here are mine...
I think they did OK. I like Chris Long... he has football in his blood. I read a story on him in SI, and he sounds like the real deal in many ways.
From looking at various draft boards, I don't get the Avery pick. I feel like they could have gotten him with their following pick (and not so early). None of the top WR's were gone yet. Then, there is Justin King. As a PSU grad, I would love to praise him, but I thought he didn't live up to the hype that came with him when in college. He got burned a lot. Plus, he left early and skipped his senior year, which I wouldn't have done if I were him. He has a chance to become something special, but he needs to improve a lot. Some of the others, I don't have a ton of familiarity with to be honest. Just a few thoughts from what I know... if you're around, let me know what you think. Take care

I could see Washington doing it if they had an established veteran QB. Seems like a recipe for disaster. I don't think the risk is work the reward. I could be wrong, it's happened once I think before.

EDMONS,
Ha ha, oh yeah? And when was that exactly and what was the subject matter?
I still like the selections, but I've certainly been wrong before too... for example, I had Michigan State knocking off Memphis in March Madness. Then again, I expected the usual Memphis free throw shooting to be present for that game.

hey thanks alot ksp. L ike you said I also like Chris long i think he can really help this team and step up to be a leader. I was wondering to with the WR that was a bit strange how the didnt try for DeSean Jackson. I dont no much on Justin King but i think he could be a contender when he gets a chance. Thanks again

SODACAN,
Yeah, good call. Jackson does seem to fit a similar mold and was high up on a lot of draft boards. Hey, who knows, maybe Avery will turn out OK. As for King, I know him well since I have seen him in every PSU game. He has the talent to become a solid player... but man did he ever look lost at times last year.

EDMONS,
Ha ha, nice. You know, I also crossed the street (near a big puddle) in the rain the other day when a cab driver was driving nearby. Let's say that was another big mistake. I'm full of 'em apparently. Hey, what do you think of the Gators that went? Is your boy Harvey going to live up to that hype in the top ten?

I don't believe that anyone else won the Super Bowl in that range. Although, Brett Favre was just outside of it (early 2nd round). As far as making the Pro Bowl, not sure...

Harvey would have went Top 15 or 20 last year. If he can be that small piece of the puzzle to help the Jags get past the Indys and the New Englands, then it was worth it. Andre Caldwell to the Bengals makes sense. He could be a solid number two or homerun type guy. He has health problems otherwise he'd have been gone in the second round. Gators didn't send a lot to the NFL this year. That's a good sign. I'll save that for a college football post though.
KP, that's a rookie mistake. You got to know better than that. If you were a player on Madden, your awareness would be around 60 or so.

MOSEBY,
I haven't thought of any others yet either. I still say it's a random stat. If being random, we could say that a bunch of late rounders win Super Bowls too, and we should already start handing the rings out to Erik Ainge and Colt Brennan.

EDMONS,
I'm thinking it was the only deal the Jags could get, because I think they could have gotten him a little lower on the list. As for the Bengals, yeah they are restocking at WR... I'm thinking they have the mindset that Henry is already gone, and Johnson may not be playing, and they need other options.
It was a rookie mistake. I hadn't had coffee yet... can I use that as an excuse? Probably not huh. Ha ha on the awareness line... so true!

Getting after Peyton is the only thing that matters in that division. Give Peyton trouble and you just might trip the king of the mountian. The Texans went the same route. The Titans...well, they seem like they are trying to get worse.

I think that if you look at what Washington did, and really think about it, you would see that they had one of the best drafts. Their offense last year was good, they had a decent running game. Teams started making them throw the ball, the only problem is, they had no big receivers, so Moss and Randle El would get bumped at the line of scrimmage, into areas where the quarterback couldn't find them. They will be running a different offense now, even some two tight end sets. Now they have Moss and Randle El, along with Kelly and Thomas. Can you imagine Moss and Thomas out wide, Randle El in the slot, Cooley at tight end and Portis in the backfield? Who's gonna get doubled? Who's gonna have one on one coverage? Not too many linebackers or safeties that can handle Cooley one on one. Not too many #3 corners that can handle Randle El. Then you have Thomas going deep and Portis in the backfield to worry about. Deadly to say the least. Randle El has never been a #2 receiver, he's better suited for the slot going one on one with the other team's third best corner. He's back there now.

What about the Steelers? Getting Mendnhall at 23rd was the best pick they could have made.

Oh well. We got Limas Sweed, too. I love that anme, just sounds cool.

You know, i don't think that its fair to give the teams that had a dozen draft picks (as well as two in the first round) 'gold stars'. Of course your gonna fill up your roster with talent. Grades should be given to teams that do the most with what they have. The Jets might have had a lot of picks, but they didn't fill very many needs. The two teams on this list that did the best on draft day were the Panthers and Redskins. The Panthers turned themselves into contenders, while the skins' stocked their roster with loads of talent, epsecially at wideout. On my list the bears and steelers are top. The steelers gave Big Ben what he wanted in Limas Sweed, a big target, and i love the mendenhall pick. While the Bears filled their key needs on offense and acquired future stars.

EDMONS,
Very true... and no kidding with the Titans. You would think they would have tried to add a big name receiver to help out Vince Young. I'm thinking they are trying to take the Dallas strategy by adding the speedster to compliment White, but still... they definitely didn't seem to improve much.

AKKNELLE,
Hey, I'm with you. The 'Skins added some great weapons. It will be interesting if any of the big receivers pan out... hopefully they won't go down the path that Westbrook did years ago. I feel good about their crop of players.

MIKE,
Hey bud. I thought about your boys... I really did. I like Mendenhall and they got value with him dropping so low. Same with Sweed, though he has had injury issues, hasn't he? Still, he's a big target. I just thought about Parker already and wondered if they could have added a more pressing need.

HUSKER,
Seriously, I saw that. They did have that reaction. Honestly, I think they will know the guy soon enough... I think he may surprise some people.

XXLEVIXX,
Well, there really is no exact science to the whole thing. I didn't try to focus too much on teams with a ton of picks. The Jets didn't have a ton. I tried to pick out a few teams that I thought could have at least a trio of players that could really turn into something, combining that with some that teams may have gotten value... take for example Dan Connor, who was projected as a late first rounder, and Carolina nabbed him in the third round. I still think he can be a productive pro. Thanks for stopping by...
