Left for dead in the chase to lure Terrelle Pryor into its football program, head coach Joe Paterno and the Nittany Lions have once again emerged as a contender for the top recruit from Jeannette, PA.
Multiple reports, specifically one from The Daily Collegian and another from the Philadelphia Inquirer, have stated that both Joe Paterno and Defensive coordinator Tom Bradley are heading to Jeannette, PA today, to visit Pryor.
Previous reports on Scout.com show Michigan and Ohio State emerging as front runners for Pryor, with Oregon also in consideration. Michigan and Oregon, both teams that run the spread offense, make a ton of sense, specifically the Wolverines, who recently hired spread offense genius Rich Rodriguez, while also losing QB standout Ryan Mallett, who transferred to Arkansas.
That leaves Penn State, a football-rich program with a fanbase desperately seeking a standout player to come in and help push the program back to elite status. Pryor, the 6’ 6” 225 pounder, not only shows speed and athletic ability, but a solid arm as well. He has drawn comparisons to Vince Young on a number of occasions. There are also reports that QB Coach Jay Paterno and Offensive coordinator Galen Hall are fully prepared to implement a spread-like offense just for Pryor. Many critics will be quick to lash out at the Nittany Lions, stating that their offense is as vanilla as their uniforms. Before doing so, one should consider a few years ago, when Penn State completely changed its offense to revolve around the talents of Michael Robinson. Robinson, at 6’1” and approximately 230 lbs., was an athletic brick wall of muscle when he played quarterback for the Nittany Lions. A recent article on CNNSI further discusses this offensive plan, as Daryll Clark (currently at the top of the PSU QB depth chart) has the ability to run and pass, much like Robinson did during the 2005 season. It’s also worth noting that the 2005 Nittany Lions finished 11-1, ranked #3 in both the AP and Coaches poll, proving that Penn State has had success with this attack.
For the Nittany Lions and Paterno, this late visit to Pryor’s home town means a few different things in my mind. First and foremost, they want Pryor bad. That’s obvious. In fact, I read that Tom Bradley, one of Penn State’s best recruiters, has had his eye on Pryor since the young man was in ninth grade. Furthermore, one must consider this a blocking tactic. Not only would Penn State want Pryor for their own, but also the Nittany Lions would hate to have a conference rival like Ohio State or Michigan reel him in, especially considering that Pryor practically lives in their backyard. One must also keep in mind that the 81 year-old Paterno rarely ever makes trips to a recruit’s home, especially in recent years. This is most definitely a last ditch effort for Penn State to make a splash at the end of the recruiting season.
Some may argue that the Nittany Lions may have no shot because in the past, Penn State and Paterno often would keep their younger players on the bench, while playing the more seasoned seniors. In recent seasons, Penn State has changed that philosophy, most notably with the likes of talents Derrick Williams and Justin King, who were simply too good to keep off the field. If Pryor decided to surprise many and pick Penn State, he likely would see extended time on the field sooner rather than later.
Furthermore, some may point out the reports that Pryor ditched an official visit to Penn State to visit Michigan. While that may have happened, it likely doesn’t point to an elimination of Penn State from contention, but instead the fact that Pryor had already made multiple unofficial visits to Happy Valley. In fact, during the Notre Dame game weekend, part of the Penn State student section was heard chanting “We want Pryor”, likely signifying that the high school phenom was at Beaver Stadium and within earshot. That brings us to one more unique point in the “Pryor Sweepstakes”. Terrelle Pryor also wants to play basketball, and not only does he want to play, but he’s pretty darn good. Scout.com has him listed as #34 overall. Whether each of these schools are willing to have Pryor play both sports, that remains to be seen. Certainly, that could help push Pryor’s decision in one direction. I can guarantee that Penn State basketball coach Ed DeChellis would welcome the athletic Pryor with open arms. The Nittany Lions basketball team has struggled in recent years, and while teams like Ohio State and Oregon have fared well as of late, DeChellis and Penn State would likely present Pryor with playing time immediately, while also feeding off his star quality.
We’re about a week away from Signing Day. Terrelle Pryor has gone on record saying he will wait until then to make his decision. Meanwhile, the world of college football (and basketball) waits with bated breath. While rumors will be rumors, it certainly appears that his decision likely will come down to Michigan, Oregon, Ohio State, and Penn State. Each of the four schools provides its own pluses and minuses. Oregon and Michigan have spread offenses intact, with QB Dennis Dixon on his way out and QB Ryan Mallett transferring. Ohio State has a class act in Jim Tressel leading the way, with a football program that has made it to two consecutive national title games. Meanwhile, Penn State is located in Pryor’s backyard, offering to implement a spread-like offense, along with a fanbase that would welcome him with open arms, and a coaching legend who not only isn’t ready to retire, but desperately wants to be on top again before he moves on.
While I still place Michigan as the favorite, one should now consider Joe Paterno and the Nittany Lions as the dark horse to lure Pryor into Happy Valley. The still feisty Paterno is always chock full of energy, and ready for a new challenge. He shows it when he runs a number of miles each day in the early morning. Why should the pursuit of the #1 recruit in college football be any different? One thing is for sure, with today’s visit by Paterno and Bradley, the “Pryor Sweepstakes” just got that much more interesting.
Kevin...this was one of your best pieces yet! I can almost feel the hope in your voice over wanting Pryor. I hope your wish comes true, and I hope he lives up to his hype...i sem to remember a recruit named Jeff Byers who was the most wanted man in recruiting..he ended up riding the bench at USC. UGH. One never knows...but he looks like the real deal. Good luck!
Kevin, thats a big "if" he can play at the next level. I hope Penn State keeps or gets him because I always think that players should stay home. I want to see such a new, dominating q-back again, the one who has it all, has all the stats, and is one tough man. Nice to read your posts. Are you blogginhg somewhere else now. I just haven't seen you that much.
kevin:
i wouldn't hold my breath if i were you. from everything i am hearing osu is in the lead. and, osu has the total supporting cast to surround him which mich. and psu cannot do. GO BUCKS!
Kev,
Good post my friend but that's not unusual for you as I always like to read whatever you put out. Either way I hope he stays home. Penn st. is a fine program with a great coach and tey deserve some good talent(especialy in-state talent) to be there. Goodluck to your team in landing this youngster and goodluck come the '08 season.
P.S. Please check out my latest post on Pete Maravich if you get a chance. thx

My sources tell me Pryor called out for Italian and Paterno showed up!
Seriously, it's really been interesting following the trials and tribulations this young man has been going through. Can you imagine being a high school senior and having a legend o####ame you love show up and sit in your living room and practically beg you to sign up with him? Seems like he's almost gotta go with Penn State, but then again this guy's got the world on a string and just maybe he wants to move far away... Here's hoping for the long shot... Quack!
Lisa... Wouldn't it be great to have this guy in the PAC-10?
Later!

LISE,
Why thank you! Obviously, there is that possibility that he could be a bust. It happens at every level and every sport. Then again, he does appear to be the real deal. As a fan of the Nits, yes I hold that small bit of hope... because Penn State has such a passionate fan base... one that has been waiting patiently to get back to where they were in years like '94. A week to go... later
MARTY,
You're right, everyone is a question mark. I think he will be a solid player though. I really do. As a Bucks fan, I'm surprised to hear you say that, as you could easily end up with him as well. As for me, no I have not been blogging anywhere else. Thanks for noticing my absence... I appreciate that. As for why, I can fill you in on email or through messaging. Take care
KP
GOBUCKS,
I assume you are referring to the rumor mentioned in the Detroit Free Press today, where one of his coaches was quoted as saying he thinks he will go to Ohio State. Sure, as we learn... in today's media, there are tons of rumors. You never know until the kid signs. Thanks for dropping by though, and best of luck to your team's chances...
GAMBIT,
As always, you're too kind. It is nice to see a star stay home. It seems like that occurring is more of a rarity these days. He will go to where he feels the most comfortable, and has the best overall fit... and I can't say I don't blame him. In recent weeks, I have seen Michigan as the favorite, but you know what... Tom Bradley and Joe Paterno have swayed people in the past. You just never know. I will check that post out soon. Look forward to reading it... later
ED,
Thanks my friend, hope all is well with you. Speaking of recruits, I bet you will miss James Hardy at IU, since he should be an NFL first rounder come April.
DWINDY,
Ha ha, good one. It really has been an interesting story, this young man. You're right though, can you imagine the pressure once he does finally pick a school? Imagine how everyone is going to be watching once he finally steps on the field... the hype. And by the way, you never know with the Ducks... they may be able to offer something other schools can't... football AND b'ball. I'm sure Lise will not want him in the Pac 10... unless he is donning red and gold.
Oregon is like the anti-Penn State when it comes to uniforms... Here's Penn State steeped in tradition in the dark blue and white, then there's a team that's backed by Nike and you're never sure what their uni will be until they hit the field, there's like 40 different combinations! I especially like the diamond plate shoulders and knees!
Kev, great post. I echo Lisa's sentiment about almost feeling the hope in your voice regarding Pryor. He would not only be an immediate asset to the Nittany Lions, he would energize the fan base. And to keep him in his backyard would be a HUGE plus! I hope the Lions get him and he leads Penn State to JoePa's swan song national championship.
Dwindy...I would love for him to go west, but only if he was a Trojan, (like Kev said), and that would never happen...he's a midwest dude. And the Ducks contrast is hilarious...
psstt...those diamond plates are "feathers" on their shoulders pads! LOL~ Gotta have the complete Duck-look. I wonder what Phil Knight will come up for this season...if there's fuschia pink trim, I give up.
Only one school will be happy a week from now, who will it be?
I've heard it's 50-50 Michigan and Ohio State. If Rich Rod starts off by stealing Pryor away from the rest of the Big Ten, well, that would be pretty sweet.
DWINDY,
Very true. In fact, one of my first posts ever, I talked about Oregon having the most hideous unis out there. Nike must love them, because they keep mass producing different ones... it almost seems like every year. John Kerry must be running the marketing... keeps flip floppin' to a new one every time. But anyway, very different is right. Thanks... later
JON,
Thanks, how have you been? Yes, it would be a huge plus. As a fan of the team, I would love it. Even more so, as a fan of sports it would be great too. Sure, rivals like Mich and OSU would disagree... but stories like that are great... kids coming in, elevating a program, helping give a title to a legend before he retires. Just like I was honestly rooting for Favre to make the Super Bowl and have a chance to derail an 18-0 team before retiring... now THAT would have been a story. Later
HOIT,
I heard that too... but I also heard PSU was out... they were back in... Oregon was out, Oregon is still in... OSU is the one (from a coach of his), etc. That's the rumors that the media loves to toss out there. I do like Michigan's chances because of their overall situation. Still, maybe JoePa and Bradley pulled off a miracle yesterday. Here's to hopin' from my angle of it all...
KELLYSCOTT,
Aren't they due for another uniform change?! Maybe you will get those tye dye jerseys in '08. =)
Peen State? I dont see it, and Rodriguez a genius? what about Chip Kellys ability to come in and turn our offense around 180 in one season. Joe is old and will be retiring soon, whats stopping Rich from jumping ship again before and before a bowl game pretty bad... at least we show coaching stability and we are not that far from the title game. Besides Pryor is more suited for our offence than MU and well OSU they wouldnt gain any ground. Love the article though soom good thoughts.

Pryor is probably the best QB to come out of Western PA since Marino, and with just as much hype. I would love this to happen, but I am not holding my breath. Pryor is the type of playmaker the Nitts have needed on offense since Robinson left, and after suffering through the maddening inconsistancy of Anthony Morelli, Pryor would be a welcome change. It would really hurt for another player of Pryor's caliber to leave the state, and quite simply, players like him don't come around often. Hopefully he makes the good choice and heads down the road to Happy Valley.
OREDUCKFAN,
I'm certainly not disputing the fact that Oregon played well, and has been a consistent contender in the Pac 10. I also mentioned that both the Ducks and Michigan certainly make some sense considering the type of offense that they run, and so on. However, Penn State and Ohio State also make sense in various ways. When it all comes down to it... Pryor could shock us with his decision... or maybe he will not. It is going to be interesting to see what happens. Thanks for dropping by!
SUPPOSEDBUCKLES,
Hey, thanks for dropping a line. I'm with you on Morelli... he was a bust if you ask me.
I'm also not holding my breath, but hold faint hope. I read one quote that Pryor questioned "the area" that is Penn State. I may have to write more on that, because there is much more to PSU than the cows that surround it. Here's to hoping... later
REV,
Thanks... obviously, the PSU side of me would love to reel in the number 1 prospect. The writer in me just wanted to try and post a side to it that should say "Hey don't count out Penn State" when many people already were. Either way, it should be another interesting season by the time Fall arrives.
Nice REV. I bet you enjoyed that, for sure. Hey, a little while back, PSU was finally able to #### away a big time recruit from LA... Michael Mauti, a nasty LB. I believe LSU was one of his other options.
kp
This kid has got all of the traits that'll make him a superstar at the college level. And if he should fare well there then there's no reason to believe that he won't pan out in the pro's.

Kevin, This was in yesterday's Pittsburgh Post-Gazette:
High school football players can sign a binding letter of intent with a college, starting next Wednesday. But Jeannette quarterback Terrelle Pryor might not sign with anyone that day.
Pryor had planned to announce his college decision live on ESPN next Wednesday. But he said today he might wait at least a few days to make his choice.
"I'd say it's about 50-50 that I'll push things back," Pryor said.
One of the main reasons Pryor might not sign next Wednesday is because he is thinking about making an official visit to the University of Oregon some time next week.
Earlier this week, it seemed the race was down to Ohio State and Michigan because Pryor wasn't going to visit Oregon. If Pryor visits Oregon, the Ducks will still have a chance at landing him.
Pryor also said yesterday Penn State is not out of the running. Penn State coach Joe Paterno visited with Pryor at Jeannette yesterday. Paterno's son, Jay, Penn State's quarterbacks coach, and PSU defensive coordinator Tom Bradley also were there. They also visited with Pryor's father at his home.
does anybody remember the name ron powlus 3 time heisman winner [beano cook] lou holtz ruined that kid.promise him everything. every record ron broke he did on his own not lou holtz. same thing with pryor could end up being a bust.he doesn't want to go to psu anyway he said he didnt think he would like the area. he's used to the big city where all the thugs are.let osu or michigan have him
Last edited by vikesforlife65 on January 31st at 4:36 PM.
It's always surprised me that PSU wasn't more in the mix with Pryor.A JoPa visit could do wonders though,I mean how could you tell a man that great "no thanks,I'll pass".
No way do you see him in any Ore. uniform, just won't happen.
As a Buckeye I'd like to see him stay in Penn. it just seems right.
Not so fast, my gel wearing friend! (that never gets old.)
I HATE the ranking of incoming freshman.
It's pathetic.
KSP, think of yourself as an 18 year old, only six years ago.(go with me here.)
Most of us begin to excel and grow long after high school. If I'm wrong a Notre Dame fan will correct me here, but...Notre Dame has been a Top Ten CFB recruiting team since Moses parted the Red Sea, yet Notre Dame has sucked big time since 1987.
Notre Dame has not been in the Top10 in recruiting lately. This year, Yes, but not lately. The main reason ND struggled this year is because all of the Seniors were Willingham's, he recruited poorly and sent his Aids to interviews. They were only getting 2 and 3 star recruits.
CorrectU:(ND won the NC in 1988, but havent won a bowl game since 1994)
Weiss has been recruiting much better than Willingham. Those werent Weiss's upperclassmen playing this year.
As for PennSt: As a Michigan fan nothing would top off a new hire like RR getting the kid he's recruited for years. PennSt would not be a bad place to go, they have that recruiting class that are becoming seniors now, and Morelli is garbage, whenever PennSt played a really good team he stunk to high heaven.
If Pryor doesnt got to Michigan I hope he goes to PennSt, and not those damn Buckeyes!!!
Oregon: Pryor cancelled the visit to your school, but maybe he can fit a visit in over da weekend...you guys are still a long shot though. Well see!

TOP,
What's up bro? No doubt that he does... but so many of them do, and still don't pan out. I'm with you though, I think he will pan out in college and in the pros... just for which teams, we'll soon find out. Thanks for the heads up, I'll go check out your latest... I have another one out there myself. Later
DWINDY,
I did see that post. It was interesting... also saw another quote that mentioned him not being sure about the area that is State College. OK OK, there are a lot of cow pastures around, but there is plenty to do, and there are big cities within reach.
VIKESFORLIFE,
Thanks for dropping by. I did see his quote about not liking the area. He does love Bradley though, so who knows. The area can be promoted... there is tons to like once you get by all the cow pastures.
And yes, I recall Powlus and Beano's predictions. Each prospect is his/her own person. Pryor could hit it big, or he could be a bust... no doubt.
MEGABUCK,
No doubt... I personally wonder how that meeting went and all the things they talked about... I do think he'll choose a Big Ten team... just which one is the question...
HUSKER,
You never cease to amaze me with your colorful comments... ha ha.
Well true... I know I personally grew after high school... heck even after college. The system certainly isn't perfect in ranking these players... you're right. But hey, it's fun to watch stories like this unfold... at least, I think so.
DEZZNUTZ,
Thanks for dropping by... nice as a Michigan guy to say you hope he goes to PSU (if he doesn't choose the Wolverines)... but then again, why shouldn't you say that, PSU can't beat you!! Honestly though, I agree with you that landing Pryor would be an absolutely huge splash for RR. Later...
It looks like Pryor already has a major ego problem. There are many high quality players and quarterbacks out there who will fit perfectly into a good team. Players with huge ego's seem to bring more baggage than talent with them. Pryor is already acting like he is in the NFL, I say let him go to Penn State or Michigan, those programs are years away from competing for a national championship. Pryor may as well begin his career with a bad decision.
buckeye excellent point!!!!! now im not sure if id like him to come to oregon!! all we need is a large ego!!!!!!!!!!! ooops let me rephrase that an overextended EGO!!!!!
Last edited by kellyscott on February 3rd at 9:09 AM.
BUCKEYEJUNKIE,
I don't know if I would go as far to say that Penn State and Michigan are far away from competing for a national title. Some people may say the same about OSU, as they get there, but still don't have the right talent to win one. Even so... things could change quickly for PSU and Michigan... as well as for other teams. College football is that unique.
As for Pryor, you can sense that at times, while others maybe he is just overwhelmed, and we have to be careful, as maybe the media could be making him seem a certain way. Thanks for stopping by...
KELLYSCOTT,
You never know...
And hey, to some extent don't most top athletes have an ego to some degree?
OREDUCKFAN,
Did he really? Was it an unofficial visit? I know with Penn State, a number of people made a big deal how he had canceled a recent visit... however it was an official recruiting visit he broke off, but he had been there multiple times in recent months.
Buckeyejunkie, I'm curious to know why it would be a bad decision to go to Michigan or PSU? You say it as if its a fact, but give no logic or resoning behind your statement. Seems to me you're making that call as a fan with your heart instead of your head. Honestly, all three programs have class, exposure, facilities, fan base and strong football roots. Going to either school will be a good move for this kid...its up to him to see which one he identifies with. Just because YOU would want to go to OSU to play football doesn't mean that HE wants to, or should for that matter. Let Pryor make his decision and then go with it. Either way, I don't think OSU will be hurting for talent any time soon.
No way he goes to PSU. You could make an allstar team out of the QB's that didn't chose to go there that the faithful thought would. Remember, you wouldn't have suffered through Morelli if they could have gotten Henne.
Change the offense? Does anyone remember Rashard Casey?
Facts are facts and right now the top kids even in PA aren't looking at PSU. WVU and Rutgers have put pressure on this program and now they don't automatically own a PA recruit. Head coach from Rutgers was flying in to HS games on a helicopter to watch kids in the poconos. Tell me that doesn't make an impression.
Don't get me wrong, I WANT PSU to get back on the map. How else can the Wolverines get a better strength of schedule playing in a 2 team division?
KSP, yea he did visit, I dont know how official it was but I do know certain people that are close to the coaching staff that said he was in fact here. It was said that he liked Eugene, the school and the state of the art weight room and training facility that we have, enjoyed the noise level of Autzen and said everyone would find out on the 6th, this much I do know. So I guess we will see, some school will get the lucky lottery pick (so to speak). I am thinking it was unofficial as a lot of people here didnt know about it.
FALCON FAN,
Where do you predict he ends up? Thanks for stopping by the post...
PENNST8GRADWOLVERINEFAN,
First of all, is it possible to be Penn State grad and a Wolverine fan?! I kid, I kid. Honestly, friends and I met one at PSU once... we couldn't believe it. Was it you?!
I do remember Casey... he didn't have the arm that Robinson or supposedly Pryor has... but still, sure I remember him.
I wonder how much the PSU recruiting is affected by the fact that Paterno may not have much time left.
OREDUCKFAN,
I do hear great things about watching a game at Autzen. As for Pryor, his visitation at PSU was the same... he was there many times, just nothing considered "official". I think I heard that Oregon was out now, and it is down to Ohio State, Michigan, and Penn State... with OSU or Mich. being likely.
Maybe we did meet. Certainly is an oddity being a Wolverine fan on that campus, but I was a fan of maize and blue before I attended.
My "gut feeling" is that he winds up a Buckeye. Kids in western PA are quite aware who has played in the last 2 BCS championships. Michigan is in a state of flux right now and R-Rod needs a year before getting these kids. The basketball program at OSU is also better right now.
This is probably PSU's best chance to take down the Wolverines. Won't make much difference. Kids just aren't interested in playing for Joe anymore.
PENST8GRADWOLVERINE,
When did you attend PSU? Heck maybe we did meet... stranger things have happened.
I definitely hear what you are saying... I'm still going to say he picks Michigan. That is where my gut says he goes... though obviously I want him to go to PSU badly, as do so many Penn State fans that desperately want him to come and push the Nits back to an elite level.
As for b'ball... who knows if he will even be able to play both sports... though you're right OSU, has the edge there. I don't think that is much of a factor though.
We'll see who gets bragging rights on the pick, and likely we'll know tomorrow.
Where do I predict he'll go...honestly, from all the messages, news and other indicators, I don't have the first darn clue. BUT, I will say that my "gut feeling" says Michigan, but mainly because I'm a Michigan fan. Not withstanding penstgradbutmichiganfan's inputs, Michigan is in a state of flux, but I think this kid's ego will take him into a situation where he will most likely be a four year starter. Not to mention his "advisor" Charlie Batch, and family friend??, was with him most of this journey - is an Eastern Michigan grad (next door to Ann Arbor) and is a former Detroit Lion. It really is hard to say exactly what his influence is, but right now its just a feeling I have. I was once scared of the pickle UM would be in if they DIDN'T land Pryor, but recent news indicates they'll be okay even without him. PSU does deserve his services and I think OSU will never have any trouble finding a quality QB after Boeckman graduates...I don't think they NEED him, other than the fact that they'd deny Michigan of his talents.
As I've said in another post, I hope Pryor ignores the hoop influence of either school. If he WANTS to be a pro QB, he'll concentrate on FB ONLY. Last time UM had a dual sport QB, he failed in an attempt to return to the NFL after a short stint in the Yank-me organization...thanks Georgie Porgie.
We'll see in less that 24 hrs though! I hope the kid makes the right decision, no matter what that ends up being.
Guess we'll all have to wait
"Pryor reportedly not ready to commit on Wednesday
ESPN.com news services
A number of schools will likely have to wait a little longer than anticipated to find out if they're landing their quarterback of the future.
Jeannette (Pa.) High School quarterback Terrelle Pryor told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review late Tuesday night that he will not sign a national letter of intent on Wednesday.
"I'm 100 percent sure I'm not signing," Pryor said, according to the newspaper. "It's a tough decision and I'm still trying to decide between Ohio State, Michigan and Penn State."
Pryor did tell the newspaper that he had eliminated Oregon from his list because it was too far from home.
The 6-foot-6, 227-pound Pryor is ESPN's fourth-ranked prospect overall and top quarterback.
He was expected to appear on ESPNU at noon on Wednesday to possibly announce his intentions. Jeannette coach Ray Reitz told the Tribune-Review that Pryor will meet with the media, but it was not clear if he would appear on the program."
FALCON FAN and PNST8GRADWOLVERINE,
It's been fun discussing this whole situation. I did see the Pryor update today that he will not be signing yet, and wants to make official visits to PSU , and possibly even Oregon too. I actually have an ongoing blog with live updates on recruiting now if you felt like stopping by and sparking up a debate on Pryor, or anyone else... or any team too for that matter. There has been a Michigan and Florida fan around in recent hours tossing out comments. Later
