Throwing Tomatoes: Shattered Hearts and Other Things Broken
Jul 06, 2008 | 9:48PM | report this

It’s all about things being broken this week. Broken bones, broken hearts, and as painful as it sounds, even a testicular fracture. Before I become a broken record, let’s just get to the tomato throwin’…

Throwing Tomatoes – Volume IX

Seattle SuperSonics and its Ownership
…for packing up and moving to Oklahoma City.
It’s always tough to see a team move. I feel for the fans of Seattle… for a lot of reasons. The Mariners enter the season with hype and falter. The Sonics never quite got it done in the 90’s. Now they add a potential star in Kevin Durant, only to have their team pack up and leave for the nation’s heartland.

A-Rod’s Love Life
…for finding a way to get all intertwined into the sports pages.
If I wanted to read about A-Rod and something besides his game (baseball game that is), I would pick up a Cosmo or People, or maybe even turn on TMZ. The only splitting I want to hear about is his bat after a high-and-tight fastball. Unless soon-to-be ex Cynthia has some more vulgar shirts, perhaps directed at Madonna. Maybe A-Rod has one for Lenny Kravitz… such as: “If You Can’t Say No”, then don’t “Dig In” with an “American Woman”. Sorry, I couldn’t resist.

Chris Snyder
…for not taking better care of the “family jewels”.
Poor Chris Snyder. He’s on the DL. But wait, it gets worse. He’s out with a testicular fracture. A busted nut if you will. The irony is, Snyder was replaced on the Arizona roster by Robby Hammock. Get well soon Chris.

Michael Beasley
…for getting injured minutes into the Heat’s opening camp practice.
OK fine, so it’s a cracked bone. That still counts as being broken. I get that he can still play, but stemming off the drama that already existed with Pat Riley apparently not being crazy about the pick, now this happens to Beasley in his opening practice? Get ready for some drama on South Beach this year.

George Sherrill
…for not trusting his fastball.
Blowing a save hurts a closer… and a team. But how about blowing back-to-back games when your team has the lead, two outs, and two strikes in the 9th inning. That’s what Sherrill did last week. I believe both pitches were on hanging sliders too.

The Brett Favre Saga
…for not going away.
This tomato is not directed at Favre himself, but more so at the rumors and sources that desperately continue to resurrect stories on Favre making a triumphant return to “Cheeseland”. C’mon people, let’s figure this story out and put it to bed.

Aaron Rodgers
…for ticking off some of the best fans in football.
Aaron Rodgers has upset Green Bay fans already and he hasn’t even taken the field yet. To further explain, Rodgers was quoted as saying “I don’t need to sell myself to fans, they need to get on board now or keep their mouths shut”. I wonder if the Brett Favre rumor came out to try and “stir the pot” more, perhaps making some Green Bay fans long for their Hall of Fame QB to change his mind and return for one more year? Rodgers later apologized, but something tells me he’ll still hear some boos at Lambeau Field when the season starts.

The Colorado and Florida Pitching Staffs
…for giving up 35 runs and 43 hits in one game

OK, so I throw a tomato at the pitching staffs of the Marlins and Rockies for their Fourth of July slugfest that provided fans with plenty of offensive fireworks. It was like teeball out there. Still, how I wish I was one of the fans sitting in the seats at Coors Field on the night when Colorado walks off with a crazy 18-17 victory over the Marlins. Now that’s exciting!

Troy Tulowitzki
…for injuring himself out of frustration.
It’s just been one of those years for the Colorado shortstop. This time, he’s visiting the DL due to a cut on his hand (that required stitches). How’d he get it? Try by slamming his bat down, only to have it slice his hand open. That’s call for an extra-large tomato… and a little Neosporin too.

People Drinking Wimbledon “Haterade”
…instead of watching the Finals this weekend.
Tennis fan or not, if you missed this weekend’s Wimbledon finals, then you missed something special. Especially on the men’s side, where Rafael Nadal was able to knock off five-time Wimbledon champ Roger Federer in a match that lasted nearly five hours.

The Orioles on Sunday
… and the fact that they just can’t win.

Make that 13 consecutive losses for the Baltimore Orioles on Sundays. Yes, that’s 13. The O’s haven’t won on Sunday since the opening week of the season, with the latest setback being a difficult 11-10 loss to the Rangers at Camden Yards. Maybe the Baltimore faithful can give Adam “Pacman” Jones a call. I hear he can make it rain and he’s free on Sundays until the Fall. Oh wait, that’s… nevermind.

Tyson ####
…for only qualifying for the 100m in the upcoming Olympics.
#### suffered a severe cramp during the 200 meter Olympics Trials race, therefore knocking him out of the competition for a medal in Beijing. One of the fastest men on the planet, and because of a cramp, he won’t have a shot.

Honorary Tomato Throwers of the Week
Because those who found success earn a chance to sling one at their opposition

Milwaukee Brewers – at the NL Central after reportedly trading for Cleveland ace C.C. Sabathia
Kyle Busch – at the NASCAR field after winning his sixth race of the 2008 season.

This has been “Throwing Tomatoes”… let the countdown begin until the next “Brett Favre to Return” rumor surfaces.

Well now we know what's already been alleged when it comes to A-Rod's private life. Not only has he a great swing of his bat. But when it comes to swinging he's not averse to straying outside of his marriage.

swingerspublication

And now that he's allegedly got the material girl in tow. What's next for this superficial a##hole ? I'd suggest that he needn't bother to cancel his subscription to the above mentioned publication.

Is there a more superficial guy within the realms of the sport at present ?

Testicles have bones? How do you break a testicle? Stretch it, strain it, bruise it or whatever, but break it? I learn something new every day.

By the way...nice job! :)

Great job as usual mon'ami. I think all the Greenbay fans should hurl some fruit at Rodgers as he's trotting out the locker room during roster introduction. I bet he'll think to himself "Man I should have had a V-8.

Been awhile since you posted. I sure hope it's because you met some hottie that resembles Angelina jolie.

JUSTANOTHER,
You know, A-Rod has always had troubles in the playoffs... I guess he's the same way in the latter stages of relationships too. Uh so yeah anyway...

LISA,
Honestly, I have no idea how... and to be completely honest, I have no interest in finding out.

GAMBIT,
Hey buddy...
Well, I have been back here and there for a few weeks. There have been a few posts a week, I guess you just caught me on the page at the right time.
Ha ha, nice on the V-8 line.
You know, Green Bay could throw cheese too.

With Favre i agree, they need to get the right information report it and then people can makl their minds up, right now nobody knows teh truth.

With Rodgers, as a Packer fan who has made many trips to Green Bay, in a way i kind of respect what Rodgers is saying. Think of it, he is just fed up, he wants to move on and get his head straight, and for the first time he cracked. But to me this shows that he wants to play, and he is ready to take the helm. It may seem weird because a lot of Packer fans seem to be disrespected, i dont think its as much disrespect as him saying, watch how i play then make up your mind. I could be wrong though.

A-Rod may have personal issues here. I'm only assuming based on reports.

The fans will stop loving a player who's a total slime ball off the field.
Keep it up A-Rod and your displeasure of the Jeter loving fans will grow far worse than you can imagine.

BMXBM,
Fair enough point... you could be right. I guess I think of it from a perspective of past experiences where if a player says anything about a town or its fans, they hear it from the majority of the fans when they step onto the field, or court, or whatever...

HUSKER,
What's up? Jeter always has that "party edge", but it's obviously totally different. A-Rod though... man for the way NY media is, maybe he doesn't belong there with the way his life is filled with dramatic news.

kp you are a ####! The publicity about A-Rod's love life isn't coming from A-Rod. All he ever says is, "No comment." The publicity comes from idiots like you who keep digging for more and more dirt. The sports media have become cheap, tabloid ####, who should follow their true calling and seek employment testing toilet paper. At least they would be well suited to that job.

A-Rod is a Quarter of a Billion Dollar Baseball Player. So, why is his marriage break up News? Who would this matter to, if you are a sports fan? When did sports reporters reduce themselves to including Soap Opera in their columns? A-Rod would probably not speak to the average guy in the Street, but what does this have to do with anything related to Sports?

SPORTSTOUGH,
So that's my point, the media talks about A-Rod's love life and all I want to hear about is his baseball game... you must have read the piece wrong. Thanks for being so kind though...

DROPSHOT,
Yes, that is what I'm saying... I throw the tomato at A-Rod's love life because it has no place on the sports pages, but instead should be in the tabloids, or People, or TMZ. Well, it shouldn't be anywhere, but that's the nature of it all. He's in the spotlight, and therefore if he can't hide anything, it gets out there.

Some of you ladies below are sexy! I think a-rod has no class, and is a over paid spoiled boy, that hasnt grown up mentally.
I hope his wife stands her ground, more power to her. I refuse to buy anymore Yankee tickets, or hats, or anything until they rid themselves of this major distraction.
The Yankee's are a great organization however, they made a poor choice in trying to buy a championship, you dont buy it, you work for it. The Yankee's are not working hard enough for it, just look at the Tampa Bay Rays''''woohoooooo'''''.
This is proven year after year that money dont win championships...It takes chemistry...and heart also.

Seattle will be aight, though -- they're a city well-suited for soccer.

Props for directing the tomato at the saga and not the man. This one wasn't Favre's fault... as if there wasn't enough to report on this week!

Let's sling fruit at not just the Wimbly haters, but those that think tennis is no longer competitive.

You're throwing pulp at guy who was top rocking on the track? Brutal...

Hey, kp, Sounds like you want it both ways. You complain about the tabloid soap opera stuff, yet you also contribute to it by bringing it up. Thus, you really are a part of it rather than being above it. You aren't discussing A-Rod's game, statistics, or anything else. You seem to be trying to capitalize on the off field stuff by claiming to be against it instead of just talking about real sports. You can't have both ways and still be taken seriously.

The whole "fractured testicle" thing is really disturbing. As a previous post mentioned, how do you fracture something that is not bone? Either way, it is still the most painful story I have ever read.

As far as A-Rod goes, why would a guy ever put himself in a position that can be misconstrued when he knows that he is never alone? I could run around with every woman in town without a picture being taken or an article being written, but I don't have any talent. Which probably also takes away my ability to get any woman in town, but I digress. The guy is one of the greatest baseball players we have ever seen, but his ethics appear to be awfully questionable. Too bad really, if he keeps it up, he will not be heralded for his accomplishments, he will be villified for his terrible judgement. Remind you of a couple of other great baseball players??

On target. Anybody that had anything negative to say about tennis after a Wimbledon Final like that definitely deserves a Roma Rocket to the skull.

Testicular fracture? You know that every guy who read that term had to take a moment to slowly re-adjust in their chair.

I prefer the term "undisclosed injury". Some things the public just doesn't need to know.

ADVENTUREOUS,
The Yankees will always spend money, but it's finding the right balance of home grown talent, chemistry, plus the vets that will get them over the top again. Rays are a great story, but don't give them a title yet. It's a long season.

MCLIONESS,
You referring to Busch? No he was actually supposed to be throwing at the rest of the field after winning again.

Probably true, and ball players that play their games with all different sized and shaped balls I am sure. Wow, that sounds a little creepy, but I think you follow. Problem is, if you are one of the biggest names, in one of the biggest markets, you have to go out of your way to have a personal life. Take Tiger for instance, the top of the world in his sport and we hear nothing about what he is doing on the weekends with his wife. If that is not proof that it can be done, I don't know what is. Alex is not only making terrible decisions, he is inviting the ridicule. I can't say that I understand, but hell, he has made 185 million in the last seven years. I can barely figure out how many 0's that is, so who am I to criticize?

Interesting blog.

I must comment on all the hoopla about the Brewers getting CC Sabathia. #### hum. They still have a horrible bullpen, a bad manager and a group of players who screwed up last season to lose a spot in the playoffs. The Cubs are still the better team, and they've made it through the toughest part of their schedule without Soriano (due back soon), Zambrano and Johnson for two weeks, and even RBI-leader Ramirez for three games. And...don't think they won't acquire another pitcher, either, to go with their already strong staff and bullpen. The Brewers may get the Wild Card...but please, please, please--let this FINALLY be the Cubs' year!

A couple of things, friend. Number one, please allow everyone to devote their faith to whomever they place their trust in.

Second, do I want to hear about A-Rod's divorce for the next month, every day? Absolutely not. Is it something that we, the people that do not have the ability to makes hundreds of millions of dollars playing a game, can learn from, absolutely. You read about the professional athletes that get themselves into such trouble all of the time. DUI's, bar brawls, shootings, adultery, etc.

If you intend to preach, please use these situations to preach to the everyday person who has a faith of their own. All of which are susceptible to the mistakes we read about so often.

My tomato goes to the US track & field association...organization..committ
ee (whatever the hell they are) for continuing with their asinine policy of top three finishers only go to the games. Tyson ####, reigning world champion in the 200 meters (and our fastest 200 meter runner) will not compete in the event because he has to nurse a hamstring injury. He is not the only example of this idiotic policy as there are several athletes who will not be going to China because of trips or falls or bad starts. Canada takes the top two and leaves one slot open for the sports to brass to decide. That is what we should do in order to ensure that we are always sending our best.

That's a fair argument on the Brewers. Getting an ace, while great, isn't always the perfect solution. Heck, take the Mets adding Santana. Everyone said they were World Series bound because of that move. Not so fast...
Still, you have to give Milwaukee credit, they're going for it.

MCLIONESS,
Doh... my bad. I hear you now.

A-Rod, Tony Romo, Tom Brady, who cares what woman or what problems they bring them. Personally, I would much rather have an aveage woman than these "supposedly gourgeous" barbie doll money grubbing primadonnas. It must cost them a fortune in shoes, makeup and nice cars. If they are stupid enough to want these women.... then they get what they deserve.

"Child Idol, Alex Rodriguez"

It truly amazes me how Tom Brady's name is mentioned in relation to this story. Tom Brady is not a -####, Alex Rodriguez is...big difference.

When one long-term adult relationship failed and a mutual breakup followed, Brady proceeded to meet another woman whom he has been loyal to for two years now...and the sporting world talked about it for a full year.

Now A-Rod's regular infidelity is considered a "private affair" and none of anybodys business? Trust me, this story is not going anywhere and it is all Yankee fans are going to hear about on these blogs...and it is actually legtimate criticism. Ahh, sweet justice.

It is also providing its fair share of humor in addition to shock and disappointment, as he was apparently boinking an Everett High graduate from Boston during the 2004 ALCS, where as we all know he came up real big in the clutch. Even more amusing was his choice of beverage during their first encounter...s/ex on the beach girly man fruity c/ocktails!! Priceless.

This guy is a turd dressed up in a suit who happens to have some regular season MLB skill. Cynthia appears to be a #### as well...but she is going to be a rich ####.

Child Idol, Alex Rodriguez.

Why are you blogging if you're so concerned about who's reading the Bible and who's not. I believe in God to the full extent but similar to what Trippilch said everyone is entitled to their opinions which is why we are here.
