Ok, I am finally recovered from my 5am to 9pm day at the track on Sunday enough to relive it! Honestly, I do not know how the teams keep these schedules but they claim it becomes routine. So here is the report from the garage on Sunday!
When I arrived, I first checked in at the garage. The crew was going over the car with a fine tooth comb and doing their individual checklists before final inspection. It took them about 2.5 hours to work over the car. While they were doing that I sauntered out to our excellent pit stall (the Miller Lite pit was the last pit by the main grandstands, right in front of Victory Lane with a huge opening next to it so I could get up nice and close as you will see...).
I don't get to spend as much time with the over-the-wall guys as I do with the mechanics, so I reintroduced msyelf to the ones I knew and got to know the few I had not yet met. They are also a great bunch of guys and were very entertaining in their answers to my questions for the website. They are pretty stoked we are focusing on them for the new Miller Lite Racing.com website. We also got a great video with Larry, the rear tire carrier, who walks us through everything they do to get the tires set up on race day. He sounded like he had done it on tape a million times...several of the guys put a sign "Pit Tours By Larry" up during our filming so unfortunately you can hear me laughing on tape but Larry was most impressed by the fact he didn't cuss once.
We had to book it back to the garage to meet up with the crew so we could finish the rest of the video about the shocks. The inspectors remembered us from yesterday (in fact the inspector giving Luke bunny ears in the picture from the blog from yesterday worked the Miller Lite pit during the race). They guys continued on through inspection and I went off in search of a few more interviews. I was lucky to catch Pat Tryson, Kurt's crew chief, hanging outside the hauler (he is rarely outside) and he was kind enough to spend 15 minutes talking with me. Look for a blog about that conversation where he was very candid about the car. I also did an interview with the only female mechanic at Penske, Andrea Mueller. She told me how she got started in motorsports and some reactions to women in NASCAR. Of course I will have an entire blog on that as well.
I also had the pleasure of finally meeting one of our own...RA6AN was in the garages on Sunday and she took a minute to peel herself off Carl Edwards to take this picture with me:
Yea!! FOXSports Bloggers Unite!! It was an absolute pleasure to meet her finally.
My "boss" had a friend with him who loves NASCAR and got to be in the garage for the first time so she and I stalked out a spot right by the gate that the drivers had to walk through to go to driver introductions and we just stood there and watched the parade. She is a big Tony Stewart fan but I swear Tony recognized me and definitely gave us the stink eye to not ask him for an autograph...the people behind us didn't get the message and got turned down. Jeff Gordon had the perfect body guard, his daughter in his arms, and no one went near him! Dale Jr and Schrub both bolted, literally ran from their haulers out the gate so no good pictures of them today...Jr must have known I was out there stalking! Some of the pictures I took from intro's will be up in my Hot or Not blog tomorrow.
Just before the race started I got the best porta - potty shot yet! LOL
The race started off very promising with Kurt running up front for the first third of the race. He was locking up the right front every time he had to stand on the brakes and was sliding around the turns with no grip but he thought if they took the bump stops out they might have a good setup. Unfortunately, after the first caution, he got shuffled back to mid pack and ended up getting hit by Scott Pruett and it created a bad tire rub. They had to bring the car in to fix it and Kurt went a lap down and never recovered. It was very disappointing for the entire team. Knowing how hard they work on the car all weekend and the tough luck this team has had this year, it was just a heart breaker. I did however, get some great shots of the pit crew in action. Here is just one of many that will be up on the website:
I am pretty much right there in the middle of all the action! After the race, I remained in the middle of it all as the top 10 cars pulled onto pit road for post race inspection, guess who stopped right in front of me. My buddy Tony!
He and Juan Pablo Montoya were commiserating about being wrecked and not being able to win. I thought for sure Tony would be going after Harvick but he seemed incredibly restrained...I moved up the row of cars to where they were interviewing Jeff Gordon, Casey Mears and Clint Bowyer. I heard a rumor that you could see me on TV in Gordon's post race interview! On my way back towards Victory Lane, I stopped and grabbed as many lugnuts as I could fit in my pockets, ya never know when you'll need a stocking stuffer! I managed to get close enough to get this shot of Kyle and crew:
It was very funny to see them all drinking wine. I was completely sunburnt and exhausted by this time and at least 5 pounds heavier from all the lugnuts in my pockets, so I headed home. Words can barely describe what it is like to be in the garages with hot pass access and I cannot thank Miller Lite and the #2 enough for being so good to me. The next race I will be "working" is the August race at Michigan so I hope to keep us entertained with some more detailed blogs from my adventures in the garage. Also, if there are particular driver pictures you would like to see just let me know in the comments and if I have them I will post them. As always, thanks for reading!
Kristen- I hope I dont pull up next to you at the next GGW Race. I think I might have an idea what your going to do with those lugnuts. I'll just remember to roll my plexiglass window up. LOL Do you have a tire and rim to go with those?
It sounds like you had a lot of fun. Hopefully they will also send you to the Pepsi 500 over here at Fontana on Labor Day. You could sneak away for a bit and come by and have some carne asada made by a real mexican. LOL
Why would Jmac use a porta potty that was probably 100+ degrees inside. Is that the best accomodations that Nascar offers there drivers? Whenever we were on a jobsite and there was a new guy on the job. As soon as he would go inside to use it. We would find the biggest rock and throw it at the side. They make a really loud ####. Well you can imagine what the front of his pants looked like when he came walking out.

Kristen, great insight into the goings-on in the garage on race day. Good shot of Jamie Mac coming out of the porta potty. When ya gotta go, ya gotta go! As for Smoke being restrained, perhaps it's because he could well be in the #33 car as Harvick's teammate at RCR next season.
What a weekend. This was the next best thing to being there. When will the new website be up? I go to Kurt's site some. It is very fan oriented. Not just trying to sell stuff.
Are you trying to say that Smoke didn't make any new fans at Sonoma? I guess HoosierRacer 13's experiences with Tony were par for the course. It looks hazy in Tony's pic. Was that the smoke from Kyle's burnout of the year?
Kristin - What an awesome time you had! I have a feeling that you and Tony will be tight before this is all said and done. He just takes some time to warm up! LOL
I think it is great that the Miller Lite people are so helpful. And it definitely gives a new perspective on Kurt.
3fan- I would never throw lugnuts at my fellow racers! I am going to put some of them on my Sentra. LOL Porta potty's are the only restrooms on pit road that I have ever seen at any track, the drivers are always running into them right before they hop in the cars...
jon- its a good guess with Tony in the #33! I dunno, didnt get any scoop on that one...
noah- foxmail me your address and I will mail you guys a lugnut or two! garages have an age limit at some tracks so hold on Noah, you'll get there!
Hanny- Website being updated as we speak, hopefully first round of changes up by mid July. Yep that is smoke from Kyle's awesome burnouts!
Iowa- Oh yea, Tony and I are going to be great friends...Riiiiggggghhhhht! LOL
I think it is destiny that Tony Stewart will one day give you an in-depth interview. Call it karma or whatever is of the unexplainable realm - Smoke is going to talk to you...maybe after his marriage to HotFoot?
Good gracious moseby ... Smoke and I wouldn't be able to stand being married to one another. We are too much alike personality-wise.
Anyway, I *still* have the blackmail pictures of Kristen and her friend in the dissin on Tony mode - which was sent to Tony last year - and he did recognize her from that picture. When you add in the Miller Lite gear to the mix, I can't say that I blame him one bit!
... all the aforementioned comments were made in jest, if you couldn't tell.
Kristen stealing lugnuts? well now. If anyone is missing ny next week, we know who to blame now.. LOL.
Maybe Tony wasn't doing autographs because a certain other driver needed the paper for the porta potty. LOL. Glad to know i wasn't the only one who got sunburnt this weekend. Great as always Kristen.
Hey Kristen! It was a pleasure meeting you too. I had fun hangin out and gawkin' at the drivers. I think I intimidated Ryan with my big ol' camera because when he saw me pointing it at him, he looked away! I'll be sure to post the best ones in my photo album, but since it's old school film, I still have to have them developed.
I should have some good shots of Jack in his newly rebuilt P-51, Old Crow, too. He came down Sunday after the race and took it for another test flight yesterday. I was lucky enough to be there at the time.
I need to find some time to write my own blog entry, though it will be more of a "fluff piece" compared to yours.
k, this is great and I appreciate all of the hard work you do for us. You and RA6AN are too cute. More pics please.LOL Hey, did you get any of Jeff Burton or Matt Kenseth? They are really nice guys.
Thanks for sharing more of your incredible weekend with the Miller Like crew. Sounds like this new website will be pretty cool! Glad to hear that you met up with one of our GGW members.
That camera lens is almost a tall as you. Let me guess. A Canon with a 300 MM f4? Certainly a pro set up all the way. Will look forward to your shots.
Lets hope you were able to keep Klvalus in line. She can be a wild child.
Klvalus:
Great reportage as usual. Given time you will get a shot at Tony but you will have to hide the Miller Lite shirt I am afraid.
The Mc Murray porta pot shot. Classic.
Rumor has it you will be getting more assignments in the future. Any truth in that?
moseby- Perhaps I can be Lori and Smoke's couples the####! LMAO!!!
Lori- Yes you do have that pic! I can send you a pic of the cake I made for my father in law with Tony's head sticking out of it too...he will love that shot. Make sure you get it to him before Michigan so he can give me more stink eye! LOL
(Lori, I just *love* you...)
Cuda- They were used lugs, not to worry...is your scalp burnt?? mine is killing me!
RA6AN- Cant wait to see your pics and read your blog review of the weekend...you had insider access to Jack way better than anything I had! Put some pics up of the plane if you can!!!
Vol- I have Burton and Kenseth pics coming up for you in the next picture blog. I did notice that RA6AN looks a bit like Cindy, same BIG smile...
Gerrel- I am hopeful about the new website, I just hope I dont look or sound too much like a doofus in the videos!
Photo- Thank you...not sure how I am going to ditch the Miller Lite gear! Perhaps I will switch into my GGW racing suit, Tony likes monk.eys right?
Your gonna have foxmail so check it!
Poor Smoke. Getting hounded by hottie Miller Lite chicks must be rough.
kv, lug nuts and shocks? You stealing the #2 Dodge one part at a time?
I was busy all weekend, and missed the race. A road course race that I was totally looking forward to, and I miss it. Dammit. Your writeup clued me in to the major action though so I'm good, and it sounds like you had awesome time!
