Finally, as promised, here are some of my thoughts about the time I spent with Kurt Busch during the last three races of 2007. Just so we are clear, I didn’t start out a big fan of Kurt’s. Not that I didn’t like him, I just never paid much attention one way or another, but Kurt and his crew won me over quickly. Not only were they awesome hosts, but I finally really watched him race and he can wheel a racecar with the best of them.
Kurt made an effort to spend one on one time with me every race weekend and included me in as many other appearances as he could. As many of you know, I did get to "officially" interview Kurt for the video FOXSports shot at the Phoenix race as well as ask him “on the record” questions in the media center. I also had the opportunity to interview him after hours at the Penske Racing Museum event announcing Sam Hornish, Jr. I was able to be out on the track when he arrived at the Miller Lite Dodge after driver introductions each weekend and lined up with his crew during the National Anthem. I got a bird’s eye view from atop his pit box during the Texas race and watched the other races from his pit area. I toured his hauler, talked with his mother, and shadowed his crew. I truly had all-access!
The first time I met Kurt was before Qualifying at Texas. I was led into the hauler all the way to the front room where Kurt was hanging out watching the Atlanta race. I was told I had about 5 minutes with him and wasn’t sure to what to expect given he had just drawn the first qualifying position and I knew he wasn’t thrilled with that.
I was pretty nervous meeting a NASCAR Champion and felt uncomfortable starting off a 3 week “relationship” by sticking my new digital recorder in between us and taking notes. I fell back on my skills as a psychologist and went into “interview” mode to calm myself down. I knew Kurt had attended the University of Arizona, my alma mater as well, so I started there. Kurt was there a few years after I was but we knew several of the same haunts. From there, we talked about playing Corn hole (http://www.playcornhole.org/ ), which I read about in his blog (being from Ohio, I come from a long line of Corn hole players). Kurt laughed when I challenged him to a game and we tried to figure out how to get a Corn hole set to the Miami track where there was plenty of room to play. We never did get in a game…but by then our conversation was rolling.
I never did turn on my digital recorder nor did I ever take notes when met with Kurt alone. One of the first things that struck me was how guarded all of the drivers were around the media, and Kurt was no different. Once he learned about the contest AND he saw he wasn’t “on record” with me, those 5 minutes turned quickly into 20 minutes. He spoke freely and was open about racing and his personal life. Every single time I figured I would only have a few minutes with him and every time I got a lot more time than I had ever hoped. As a result, I don’t have a perfect record of our time together, but I had a meaningful exchange with him.
Here are a few things that I observed and found interesting as well as a “hot tip” right off the presses…
Kurt is just as disappointed with the race (TV) coverage just as we are. Primarily because they don’t show any of the racing further back in the field and he knew what he was doing at the time (passing a lot of cars on the way to the front). He said he didn’t notice much about the pre-race or actual coverage because they always watch with the sound off. Hmmm, sound familiar?
Kurt was very careful with his choice of words when asked about the COT, the rules or NASCAR’s decisions, suggesting to me that NASCAR keeps their drivers on a tight rein. It will be interesting to see if NASCAR’s newfound idea to let them show “personality” will also apply to their opinions about NASCAR itself. For the record, I don’t think Kurt was a big fan of the COT at the time…but that’s just my gut talking.
Image really does count for a lot. It seems Kurt has to work twice as hard and be twice as careful as some of the other drivers because of things that have happened in the past. He has definitely had some negative press in the past, but when you think about it, who hasn’t. Consider this...after Texas there was a big “to-do” about how he spoke to his spotter during the race, which resulted in him and his spotter doing interviews on camera the following week explaining how they are great friends from childhood, which allows them to speak that way to each other and forget it. Now, doesn’t Dale Jr “get into it” with his crew chief all the time? Yet, when he does it, it is seen as funny, “family”, and part of his charm. Kurt was frowned upon for doing the same thing I know there are a few other drivers who get the negative spin in a neutral situation. I can’t imagine how frustrating that is.
Kurt is funny! Check him out on MadTV…he has some great one-liners. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-MC_EobBJik He is really making an effort to meet and be available to his fans. He is looking to do more fan friendly media, even maybe “Cribs” to show off his new home in North Carolina and give us a peek into his personal side. Many of you know he is one of the only Cup drivers to sign autographs nearly every Sunday before the race at his merchandise hauler. It really is very impressive given his crazy media/PR schedule each weekend. Give him a chance and you might be surprised at who he really is.
Kurt’s team is on the rise. With Pat Tryson’s solid leadership, Kurt’s considerable driving talents, a young, capable crew, and Mr. Penske’s unwavering confidence in Kurt and his ample resources, they will be the class of the Dodges and fighting for the Championship. Being able to watch them so closely AND compare them to others in the garages, it was obvious this team has chemistry. You heard it here first…
And hot off the presses! If you’d like to make a little money off Kurt…The Palms in Las Vegas just announced today it will have a special “Battle of the Beers” betting line between Miller Lite and Budweiser. You can bet the results of the entire season, (the current line is that Kurt will finish 8.5 positions ahead of Kasey), or you can bet whether Miller or Bud will finish best each race. For all the details, go here: http://www.millerliteracing.com/
I am happy to expand on any of my experiences with Kurt or answer any questions you have about him or his team. For folks who haven’t been around in the off season, continue reading my blog for more on my experiences in the garages. Thanks for reading!
very cool, klv. I didn't know that Kurt was the only driver who does the signings on the raceday, but since he was the only one I saw at Infineon I kind of started to follow him in the races....and I absolutely loved his comment after the All-Star race when Kyle took him out, that was classic!
I'll never forgive Kurt for taking Tony out last year during the 500.
Oh come on... totally kidding.
Wish him nothing but success. Thanks again for your "insider" views. Maybe his writing over here at FoxSports will help even more with his image. He is only human after all :)
Tez - Yep, Kurt makes it a priority to be out there signing every week. I think he has only missed it a few times. He is very witty at times, your right that comment about his bro was classic!
Lori - =) You and your driver, I swear...LOL I think Tony fans could relate to Kurt well, since they are both only human!
An exceptional article on Kurt. You brought out the human side of him. Most of the bad publicity he gets usually is from news casters wanting a scoop story with little substance and that is sad.
KLV- Your inside views on the drivers during your trip seems to have been invaluable. I do believe that you have converted of few of your fellow FoxSports bloggers into secret Kurt Busch fans through your writing. Well...at least when their driver has an early exit from the race, we have Kurt Busch we can rally behind. Thanks once again for sharing with us all!
klvalus - Great post and you got the real Kurt Busch cause he new you had no reason to print bad or good like the others. Like you said the network/ media can put a spin on something that is not.
Its time we tell them to stop spinning the words to sale or to hipe something that is not. The media need to sale newspapers/magazines and they need a cover that will shock/scare and anything else to get you to bye into it.
You have done Kurt Busch/ Miller and most of all your friends on here proud to know you girl. You Rock and should be running Kurt Busch media affairs. Cheers
This blog just goes to show that if the media wanted to they could find the good side of a story to report on instead of all of the negativity. I know that some of the negative stories need to be reported but they don't have to be run into the ground. I also understand the media has to report stories that sale either air time or any other type of merchandising. But again there doesn't have to be that much. Also great stories like this would sell the same spots.
Thanks for a great story.

Bravo, KLV. Met Kurt Busch a couple seasons ago, talked with him for a couple of minutes. What a good guy he is! Very honest and passionate about racing...and a heck of a racer.
kl.......thanks for the juice on one of my favorites. It would be nice if all the people booing could meet the driver they boo. Two minutes would open a lot of minds.
Kristen- That was cool. I remember following him when he drove the 97 for Jack. My nephew in Kansas was and still is a big fan of Kurt. The interview really put a whole new perspective on who he really is.
Photo- Thank you, your praise always means a lot to me! I did see that the Miller Lite Dodge will lead them to the green in the last Bud Shootout! Seems fitting somehow!
Gerrel- I am sure Kurt will be thrilled to hear that! He is a great pick for your fantasy teams too!
Forensic- I couldn't compete with Kurt's PR guy, he is one of the VERY best but I greatly appreciate your confidence in me! Thank you for the high praise as well.
Charrit- It does seem like the media really wants Kurt and a few others to be the "bad boys" and will warp any story to fit that image. Glad you like it.
JJdbullet- he is very passionate about racing indeed and he can wheel a car, thats for sure! Thanks for coming by...
CountryJ- sending any chick-fil-a my way yet? =) You have an excellent suggestion there BTW...
3fan - Before this experience, my fav memory of Kurt was when his wheel fell off at Homestead and won the Championship...that was just crazy! Your newphew is rooting for a good guy.
potentially stupid question, klv; you responded to Forensic about Kurt's PR person and I know you got to talk with drivers and pitcrew members, but did you get a chance to chat with his PR guy?
Thank you for for pointing out what a great guy Kurt is. I'm sure stories like this would sell a lot more than the negative stories. Kurt has worked really hard to improve his image, but he has ALWAYS been a great guy and should not have to apologize for who he is.
By the way, why is this Bud Shootout referred to as the "last" Bud Shootout?
I met Kurt Busch only once and it was not intentional. It was unbelievably easy to get to him and I just kind of walked into him. He was so nice and started talking to me first. I was wearing a Tony Stewart top and he chatted with me while he signed autographs. He was not my favorite at all especially after he pulled the stunt with Tony at Daytona and Dover but after talking to him for awhile you could tell he wanted to put the Tony thing behind him real fast. Kurt has learned and grown alot from his earlier run ins and knows driving on pit road wild with emotion and endangering the crew members was wrong. It was not his intention to harm any of the crew. Some people do foolish things at the spur of the moment because they get caught up in the heat of competition. That is all it was and it is over and past. After seeing Kurt with his fans and how nice and sincere he truly is, I wish him all the luck in the Sprint Cup! Hugs and kisses. Smoken.
Tez - not a stupid question at all...I have purposely tried to protect certain folks identity as I post out of respect for them and Kurt's PR guy is one of them.
Everything I did went thru him and he took me under his wing and looked out for me the entire time. He is responsible for Kurt's schedule, getting him there, writing his press releases and coordinating with the team. You can't get to a driver without their PR's help. I had a lot of contact with Kurt's PR guy and he took me on a very cool shopping spree at Kurts merchandise hauler!
Kurt's PR guy is one of the most experienced, respected, and well-liked guys in the garage. He has done PR for Rusty, Alan Kulwicki and Bobby Allsion. He can also name almost every brewpub in the USofA! Perhaps I can see if he will let me do a blog on him...
Also, I know he printed this blog and the comments and showed them to Kurt...
PenskeFan: This is the last year that Budweiser will be sponsoring the Shootout.
klv: I really enjoyed this story. I was at the Bud Shootout selection last night -- it was really cool seeing the drivers up close. Kurt Busch seems like a very personable and intelligent guy. (I don't like his brother though).
I started liking Kurt Busch a few seasons ago when Kevin Harvick was such an immature jerk toward him, constantly making fun of his ears and bad-talking him. I liked him even more last year at the Daytona 500! Anyway, I hope he has a great season!
Thanks for the awesome story, klv. I really enjoyed it. Might you have a future in this business?
Penske- This is the last Shootout Budweiser is sponsoring, they are pulling back on their sponsorship to only the #9 car. Agreed 100% on Kurt being a good guy!
SmokenH- Yes, there appears to be a bit of a rivalry between the #2 and #20...I think your right about Kurt does try to learn from his mistakes and do the right thing the next time. That is one thing I noticed, he hasn't made the same mistake twice...I like that. Thanks for sharing your experience with Kurt!
24fan - You are too kind! I doubt I will leave my day job to write for a living but you never know!
I heard Kurt was quite sick with the flu yesterday, media day would be a challenge under those conditions! I too, never understood the personal attacks on his appearance (many of those who do pick have PLENTY of their own issues!). I guess when you can't pick on the driving you go for something personal?
Yes, they did mention that he was under the weather last night. He was sitting all by himself off to the side and I wasn't sure why. But then when they interviewed him about having the pole he looked sick, very sweaty, but was very gracious to everyone. Cool guy!
Kristen - other than Smoke, Kurt is probably my least favorite driver and I also dislike Roger going back to the first CART race against the Indy 500 (CART still equals Crybabies at Roger's Track to me) so I started reading this blog 5 times before I finally got through it. However, as always, your writing talent brings out the best in any topic you cover. While I'll never be a Kurt fan, like all drivers, he has a lot on the ball not only in driving talent, but in many other ways or he wouldn't be where he is today.
Of course, I'm still thinking about calling Vegas to put some money on Kasey finishing closer to Kurt in the points than the current line.
Thanks, enjoyed.

Like you klvalus I never really paid alot of attention to Kurt but I thought Kyle got a raw deal when he entered Cup because of all the fans who dislike Kurt bunched the two of them up with their hate. Then when Kurt ####ed fenders with my man Smoke at Daytona, I was piz sed because Smoke should of had Daytona last year. Then the Busch brothers collided at the Allstar Race and then came Dover. But Dover was Kurt and Smokes fault. Smoke gave the Dover race up to just finish Kurt off in the end. Who started what first in that race doesnt matter and is past. I think the two wont be colliding anytime soon.
Being around the tracks so much, I see some fans hurl insults at Kurt and he handles himself like a champ. He smiles in their faces and keeps signing for his fans. I dont know what he is thinking in that head of his but he never stops smiling. I find myself always wondering what is he thinking? I know I couldnt do that. Thats tough. I do like the fact that he keeps smiling though and I always watch for him to lash out but he never does. Off track the man sure does keep his cool.
Kurt seems like he is working harder on his image and thats cool. He sure doesnt get all the cudos he deserves because of his talent. He is right that the stations focus their shots on the front or on the most popular drivers. I could go on with that one but this post is getting to long as it is. Kurt and Smoke have alot in common in their ability to pass and move up front through the pack. Kurt is very close to the top of the charts when it comes to gaining positions. One
GMAC waaaaaaaaaaas aaaaaaauup? Kinda chatty today arent cha? Its on dude! Shootout practice is here! yipeeee!!!!!!!!! Finally Daytona is here!!! woooohoooohooohooo!!!
Good article klvalus. Hope kurt feels better. He gets alot flack cuz of his old ways but its died down alot. Its all good now. Kurts got a good crew chief and seems to get along with everyone on his crew so forget about the champagne and look for the blue number two in victory lane this year drinking some beer!
Speaking of getting along with everyone. Wheres the Misses today? A Kurt article and no Ladydi anywhere to be found? Waaaaaaaaaaas aaaaaaaaaup with that? She must be in a stranglehold with pof and wreaking some havoc in Jr Nation somewhere. lol... Dont you just love that lil firecracker. lol....
LOL Smoke120, I am here...Love your blog klvalus!!!
You are the greatest!
You showed the side of Kurt that we Kurt fans have seen for years. He is great to his fans and has a wonderful fan site. He doesn't charge to be a fan and even gives away 3 prizes every month to 3 lucky winners. He is the best!!!
Kurt is and will be one of the best in Nascar. He has the talent, drive and determination to get'er done!!
wooooooooaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh did you see that action on pit road man? Looks like the kissin cousins are puckering up for the big one again this year! klvalus you wrote your blog just in time. lol.... hey ladydi --- how u doin? lol...
Hoosier - Appreciate the effort it took to read my blog and as usual you can respect him if not like him. Thats cool in my book! I would take that bet!
Lisa - thank you! Your probably not a fan anymore (after shootout practice! LOL). Oh, and another THANK YOU for your support...which will make more sense next week I suppose.
GLMC- Thanks for sharing your experience with Kurt, I agree, he does do an amazing job of smiling despite some of the fan's treatment. He is very good at keeping his cool outside the car, although as you said, it appears he and Tony have some unfinished biz IN the car! Gonna be a good year...
Smoke120- Your right about Pat Tryson, he has made a huge difference with his experience AND Kurt's crew is young, capable and really behind him...its a good combo.
LadyDi - I was wondering if you would find this! I am glad you liked it. I figured it might be hard to teach a Kurt fan something new about him...
Was at work so didnt see Shootout Practice =( but sounds like they are aggressive and ready to get going!
I guess Miller Lite wont be leading the last Bud Shootout...the way they are going, with all the back up cars coming out JR might end up leading them to the green! LOL
Thanks for reading everyone and enjoy the race this weekend!
kvalus,
Excellent scribble, the same thing they do to hockey to make it dull on TV is what they do to racing, they chase the puck. Any fan of either will tell you the game is decided by what goes on elsewhere just like racing. Hopefully scribble like this will open the eyes of the decision makers and change a bad practice. Make the walls an asset instead of a barrier. In both hockey and NASCAR they should embed more cameras in the walls so you can get a 360 degree up close and car level personal view of the race or full body check view of the game.
Considering the track conditions at Daytona, it was evidently going to happen and it did twice just in practice. Now for the actual shootout, I would think we only saw a preview of what the entire race is going to be like.
The two incidents were only racing. Wonder if Kurt really had steering problems but it does look like he took a few bashings on Tony to even up the score.
It is my view that the track is really unstable to host those speeds safely. The cars looked like they were on a BMX track jumping around and bouncing back and fourth. You would think NASCAR would let a little change out of their pockets to smooth out the surface and eliminate some of the rough surface.
Track was a little unstable at those speeds but so were Kurt and Smoke. lol.. Steering problems. lol... You are a funny lil mon kee. lol... With really good eyesight. lol..
Looking at that cute little mon kee face of yours photgr I wonder how Kyles doin right now? Think hes a little confused and scratching his head? Awwwrrrr? Huuuuuhh? lol...
Why you gotta be like that a p e face thank you? I was just playing with ya? lol... funnin with cha... get it? Trying to put a smile on that silly mug of yours. lol... dont like lol do ya? tickle wiggle giggle... aaaarrrrr aaaarrrr aaaarrrr... being silly is all... Do you want really want me to sing you a song?
okay here goes...
This is our country... doo doo doo doo doo...
thats all I know for that one. okay? lol...
Wait a minute. I got another one just for you.
If you smiling and your laughing the whole world smiles with you..... If your...
Smoke120 you got more funny bones than Carter has liver pills.
I like A*P*E Face better. if I was still a youngin, I would not mind the other face. Being older than dirt you gotta go with the old #### route. Take care.

You gotta be a little young at heart though with a cool looking a p e foxplate like that. Ive never seen a wise looking a p e before. Must be the attachment. Take care u.
Enjoyed the post. Nice to get such in-depth perspective, thanks.
Also, had seen the Busch piece on MadTV and enjoyed that too. He did seem to be able to have fun with the two professional comedians.
Always have liked Kurt Busch - PARTICULARLY when he got cross-wise with so many fans and administrators for not cow-towing to meet their image of a NASCAR driver.
The action between Tony (I guess I ran out of talent) Stewart and Kurt (my car is my best weapon) Busch just shows that at some level all drivers are Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde types. They both seemed to take strides toward finally learning a little maturity last year but obviously the true character comes out of both under stress.
I say fine both 100 points (money means nothing to them) and LET'S GO RACING!!!

I was so wrong in my presumption that Kurt put the Tony thing behind him. He let his emotions get the best of him once again and that it is so bad for his image. I still think he is good to his fans but as far as him being sincere, that went right out the window last night. Maybe he was sincere last year after the pit road incident but he let his anger get the best of him once again. Now Kurt has to start all over again this year with working on his image. Shame. I thought he made a turn around. I don't know if he will be able to fix his image with this last stunt. If the observation deck last night was any indication, the boos will probably be louder this year at the track towards him. I still wish him the best but I am really shocked that he did not learn his lesson regarding retaliation last year.
Tsfan- Thanks for coming by even though not one of your fav topics!
Dave - It is interesting to see how NASCAR and fans tag the "bad boys" yet what has most people talking today and excited for the race? aggressive driving...go figure.
