NL MVP close
Nov 20, 2007 | 10:57AM | report this
Since Barry Bonds won his fourth consecutive National League Most Valuable Player Award in 2004, the NL MVP has had different winners each year, with Albert Pujols outpointing Andruw Jones and Derrek Lee in 2005 and Ryan Howard edging Pujols last year.

Those campaigns were close, and this season figures to have another tight race and perhaps a fourth straight year with a different winner, as several players turned in MVP-caliber seasons.
This year's race should also be close in part because, while there are a number of deserving choices, no player figures to be a unanimous top pick of the voters.

The NL MVP will be announced today at 2 p.m. ET.Colorado's Matt Holliday led the NL in batting average and RBIs for the NL champion Rockies, while Philadelphia's Jimmy Rollins and Chase Utley put up MVP-worthy numbers for the NL East champions.Although the Brewers missed the playoffs, Milwaukee's Prince Fielder led the league with 50 home runs, so he has a shot to become the franchise's first league MVP since Robin Yount won the American League Most Valuable Player Award in 1989.

The 32 voters on the NL Most Valuable Player Award committee were required to file their ballots, listing the top 10 candidates in order, before the playoffs began. Player are awarded 10 points for a first-place vote, nine points for a second-place vote, etc.

Here's a rundown of the top candidates in alphabetical order:

Prince Fielder, Milwaukee Brewers: Fielder led the league in home runs and finished tied for third with 119 RBIs. He also batted .288, slugged .618 and had a .395 on-base percentage, all figures that rank among the league leaders. Since Milwaukee moved to the National League in 1998, no Brewer has finished in the top 10 in MVP voting and just three (Carlos Lee, 17th in 2005, Richie Sexson, 12th in 2003 and Jeromy Burnitz, 19th in 1998) received votes. That will change this season with Fielder. He won the silver slugger this year.Fielder was once the spokesperson along with his father for the McDonald's triple cheeseburger, and appeared with his father on MTV's Rock n' Jock. After his father took a portion of Prince's signing bonus for negotiating his first contract, the two have not been on full speaking terms.

http://www.bullysportsfantasyblog.com/images/PrinceFielder.jpg

When his father played for Detroit, Prince would sometimes come along for batting practice. Contrary to popular belief, Fielder did not hit a home run into the upper deck of Tiger Stadium at the age of 12, but he did hit a home run over the fence as a pre-teen. Fielder set the story straight in a 2007 interview with Fox Sports during a road trip to Detroit.Fielder currently holds the Brewers' franchise record for home runs in a season, with 50. By hitting his 50th home run of 2007 he became both the youngest player ever to reach the mark, as well as the younger half of the first father/son duo to slug 50 in a single season.Fielders 1st son with wife Chanel was born August 17th during Double A Huntsville; his name is Jadyn Omari.

Matt Holliday, Colorado Rockies: Holliday helped the Rockies win the pennant by finishing first in two Triple Crown categories (batting .340 and driving in 137 runs). His 36 home runs were the fourth most in the NL behind Fielder, Philadelphia's Ryan Howard (47) and Cincinnati's Adam Dunn (40). Holliday also finished among the league leaders in runs (120, third place), hits (216, first) and total bases (386, first). The Rockies drafted Holliday in the seventh round of the 1998 draft. Along with Rockies third baseman Garrett Adkins, Holliday is considered to be the new face of the Rockies franchise as the Todd Helton era eventually comes to a close. He and Atkins are also best friends who met during the 2002 season (they were minor league teammates and roommates on the road) and their closeness and ever-improving offensive ability were featured as the subject of an article in the April17, 2007 issue of Sports Illustrated.http://mas.scripps.com/DRMN/2007/07/07/435157575_o.jpg

Jimmy Rollins, Philadelphia Phillies: Rollins (.296, 34 HR, 94 RBIs, 41 SB) had more total bases (380) than any player in the league except Holliday (386), and Rollins played Gold Glove-caliber defense. No NL shortstop, however, has won the MVP Award since Cincinnati's Barry Larkin in 1995.Jimmy, a native of Oakland, California has become one of the premier shortstops in Major League baseball and continues to thrive for the Philadelphia Phillies.  At 27, he has been selected to three MLB All-Star games and when the 2006 season begins, Rollins will continue a 36-game hitting streak from the end of last season and chase the elusive record 56-game hitting streak by the great Joe Dimaggio.  Jimmy began displaying his skills on the baseball diamond at Encinal High School in Alameda, Calif., the same school that produced current Florida Marlins pitcher Dontrell Willis and former Pittsburgh Pirate outfielder and Hall of Famer Willie Stargell.   As an infielder for the Jets, Rollins broke 10 career school records including steals (99) and batting average (.484).  For his accomplishments, he was selected to the All-USA High School Baseball team by USA Today and was rated Northern California's top high school infielder.  He was also a Baseball America 1st Team All-American.  Jimmy played Babe Ruth and AAU Jr. Olympics baseball and his parents James and Gigi were honored in 2002 by Babe Ruth Little League, Inc. with a "Graduate Parents of the Year Award" for "their remarkable accomplishments in raising their son."  Rollins was a 2nd round selection by the Phillies in the 1996 June draft.  He began rookie ball in Martinsville, and quickly worked his way through the Phillies farm system.  He played his first game in a Phillies uniform on September 17, 2000, making the start at shortstop.  He promptly hit a triple in his first at bat in the majors against the Florida Marlins.  Jimmy enjoys giving back to the community and in 2004, he served as an Honorary Chairman for Easter Seals.  In 2003, he also served as an Honorary Chairman for the Negro Leagues Baseball Memorial Fund, which sculpted a statue to honor Philadelphia's Negro League players.  Growing up in Oakland, Jimmy got the chance to meet fellow Oakland native, and former rap artist MC Hammer and he appeared in several videos of Hammer's and Mavis Staples' in the late 80s and early 90s.  Jimmy's younger brother Antwon has spent time in the Rangers farm system.

What will happen in 2008?Part 1.
Oct 29, 2007 | 2:23PM | report this

Usually right after a World Series you don't see predictions for the next season. There is a very  http://factorydirectcellular.com/images/products/cases/mlb/logo-mlb-big.jpggood reason for that. You really don't know what each team's roster will look like after the offseason. So many changes can be made, good, bad, and ugly. That is why these won't be the most accurate predictions in the World.  For example: Say A-Rod goes to the Nationals. Do you think they will improve? Well, if you don't your wrong. Now, the Nats probably won't get A-Rod because of his price, but I was just giving an example. So, lets get started here!

Boston Red Sox

You might of guessed I would start here. The World Series Champions. This is a very good hitting team with a strong ace and some veteran starters. They have a very strong lineup 1-9 and can get clutch hits from almost everybody. Their next seasons lineup may look like this: Dustin Pedroia 2B, Kevin Youkilis 1B, David Ortiz DH, Manny Rameriez LF, Mike Lowell, 3B, J.D. Drew RF, Jacoby Ellsbury, CF, Jason Varitek C, Julio Lugo, SS. As far as the race for A-Rod goes, Boston has the money and is in contention to sign him. Curt Schilling and Tim Wakefield may retire this offseason because of age and to go off in the sun. Overall, I think they will return many of this years players, but they are aging. It might be interesting to see how they hold up toward the end of next season.

Colorado Rockies

This team is very young team that now has playoff experience. There pitching led the league in ERA in the second half of the season which is very good considering they play at Coors Field. They also had a great defense.  You could make the  argument that the Rockies shouldn't even of made the playoffs because Matt http://img.webring.com/r/c/coloradorockies/logoHoliday didn't touch home against the Padres. Even so, this team could be the best in the NL again next year because of all of their returning players. This is what their lineup might look like next year: Willy Taveras CF, Troy Tulowitzki SS, Matt Holiday LF, Todd Helton 1B, Garret Adkins 3B, Brad Hawpe RF, Kazuo Matsui 2B, Yorvit Torrealba C, Pitcher. The Rockies have nearly the same lineup and it probably won't change much. Their pitching rotation might be something they want to address and maybe get a veteran arm on their team.

Cleveland Indians

This year the Tribe came up one win short of probably winning their first World Series in 59 years. (the second longest drought in the major leagues)  Next year, they return most if not all theirhttp://img297.imageshack.us/img297/9273/chiefwahoovoodoo3wy.jpg starters including the starting rotation. They are a mixture of good hitting defense and pitching. Here is what their lineup could look like next year:Grady Sizemore CF, Asdrubal Cabrera 2B, Travis Hafner DH, Victor Martinez C, Ryan Garko 1B, Jhonny Peralta SS, Kenny Lofton:) LF, Franklin Gutierrez RF, Casey Blake 3B.  The Indians have a lot of flexibility at the starting rotation with the guys that were in the post season, Cliff Lee, Jeremy Sowers, Adam Miller could make his major league debut, and Aaron Laffey. The Tribe is trying to return to its former AL Central glory like they had in the 1990's.

Arizona Diamondbacks

The Diamondbacks came farther than any fan could have dreamed this season. How many times do you see a team who said they were in a rebuilding year go to the NL Championship Series? http://fantasybaseball.usatoday.com/images/teamlogos/MLB/ARZ.gifLet alone win their division. It was pitching that got them into the playoffs, not their bats. Anyway here is their lineup for next year:Chris Young CF, Orlando Hudson 2B, Eric Byrnes LF, Connor Jackson 1B, Mark Reynolds 3B, Carlos Quentin RF, Stephen Drew SS Cris Snyder C Pitcher. As you can probably see, they need a big name or two if they really want to contend next year. Even if they win the NL with that lineup, they'll get killed by the AL team in the World Series. As far as pitching goes, they have to keep Webb, Hernandez, hope Randy Johnson comes off DL to play next year and maybe get one more bullpen pitcher who could help them win.

Well, that was part one of my 8 part series. Hope you keep reading for your favorite team to come up if it isn't already there!
