Morning Baseball Update: Happy Anniversary, Boomer!
May 16, 2008 | 3:58AM | report this

Scroll down a few paragraphs for the fantasy news if you need to. I need to get something off my chest first.

I've been to a lot of great games, most of them in Yankee Stadium: The Aaron Boone game, a couple of World Series clinchers, Game 5 against the Diamondbacks in 2001 ... as a fan, I have more memories than I ever could have imagined. Saturday marks the 10th anniversary of David Wells' perfect game, and that one topped them all.

It also represented what I love most about baseball - you never know when something great is going to happen, or who's going to make it happen. In basketball, if someone is going to have an all-time game, you know it's going to be someone like Kobe or LeBron or D-Wade. In football, the Giants recently pulled a shocker, but it was the Super Bowl - it's supposed to be exciting.

Wells' gem came on a random Sunday afternoon against the Twins. My friend Cogs and his fiancee (now wife) Monica were going to be in town for my cousin's wedding the day before, and he had asked me to pick up tickets. The three of us, along with our friend J.D., got to the game a little late, expecting to sit down for a few beers on a relaxing Sunday afternoon. In the fourth inning, we knew Wells hadn't allowed any hits, and we asked the guy in front of us if he had walked anyone. He turned to us with a grin and said, "Nope."

After that, I felt like I was watching the best suspense thriller ever made - it kept building and building and building. After every out, we'd look at each other but not say anything, because we weren't going to be the ones to jinx it. By the eighth, I watched a few pitches while mostly covering my eyes. I honestly can't imagine a sporting event - or any other form of entertainment, for that matter - being so exhiliarating. Whenever I see Wells criticized for being a drunk or a lout, I smile and remember the history I witnessed thanks to him.

One more note: Cogs lived in San Francisco for awhile. Being such a big fan, he kept the game ticket in his wallet (and probably still does). A few years after the game, a friend of his happened to be on a work visit to Macy's in Union Square and spotted Wells. He called Cogs, who tore out of his office and got to Macy's within minutes. Out of breath, he found Wells and asked him to sign the ticket. Wells looked at the ticket before signing, then looked at Cogs quizzically and said, "You really carry this thing around with you?"

FRIDAY

First pitch: Pirates-Cubs is the lone NL game at 7:05 p.m. ET, while the rest of the slate starts at 7:05. Here's the full schedule.

Pitcher to start: Greg Smith was good for strikeouts on Thursday, but not so good for everything else. Tonight, I'm going to put my money where my mouth is on a suggestion I made earlier in the week and go with Florida's Andrew Miller (3.4 percent owned) at home against the Royals.

SATURDAY

First pitch: The Mets and Yankees get things going at 1:05, along with the Pirates and Cubs. The Yanks can lose Friday to Johan Santana, but if they lose this one Mount Hank might explode. Also, don't forget to watch the FOX games at 3:30: Brewers-Red Sox, Indians-Reds and Dodgers-Angels.

Pitcher to start: Again, if I can recommend someone to you, I can pick him myself. Barry Zito, you're up! He's owned in 43.6 percent of FOXSports.com leagues, and he faces the White Sox. Gulp.

SUNDAY

First pitch: Royals-Marlins at 1:10.

Pitcher to start: I'm going against my bias toward good K/BB rates and picking Kason Gabbard (2.1 percent owned) of the Rangers. He's been solid when not hurt or getting beat up by Richie Sexson.

On to the news as we begin our first interleague weekend of the season:

  • Alex Rodriguez is on target for a Tuesday return. Kei Igawa was sent back to Triple A so Ian Kennedy could start, but that didn't go well.
  • Bartolo Colon pitched another good game in the minors last night, but even though the Red Sox need a starter next week in Clay Buchholz's absence, it's probably not going to be Colon.
  • Nick Johnson's on the DL? No way! Seriously, he'll be out 4-6 weeks with a wrist injury. Dmitri Young will DH this weekend, and play first when the Nats don't use a DH. Speaking of the Nats, Rutgers alum Jason Bergmann threw a gem yesterday.
  • Since his hamstring "tightened up" in a rehab game last night, Rangers 3B Hank Blalock will not return to the lineup tonight as expected. If you're a Blalock owner, look for an update tonight or tomorrow.
  • Braves 3B Chipper Jones missed last night's game with a groin strain, but he should play tonight. Also, here's your daily John Smoltz update.
  • Dodgers 3B Blake DeWitt was a late scratch Thursday due to lower back pain. He should be in the lineup tonight.
  • Jack Wilson's rehab assignment is underway, and he should be back at shortstop for the Pirates in a week or so.
  • Remember when I wrote yesterday that I need Brandon Webb to go 34-0 for one of my mixed league teams? Nine down, 25 to go.
  • In St. Louis, Kyle Lohse might miss his Sunday start due to a sore shoulder, and Jason Isringhausen stinks so much that he might go to the minors.
  • Mets' 2B Luis Castillo played yesterday and got two hits. So much for Willie Randoplh wanting him on the idsabled list.
  • Ryan Braun ... wow, eight years is a long time. The deal sounds like a win-win, though. Fellow Brewer David Riske is on the DL.
  • Masa Kobayashi got the save for the Indians yesterday. He could get more before Joe Borowski returns.
  • A's reliever Santiago Casilla hurt his arm last night. Keep an eye on this one if you were hoping for saves from him at some point.
  • Designated hitters you need to be careful about due to them playing in NL parks this weekend: Travis Hafner, Jim Thome, Frank Thomas, Gary Sheffield, Matt Stairs and Cliff Floyd. Hafner says he doesn't know if he's going to play, and the Tigers' Web site says Sheffield has been "ruled out" of playing the outfield for the time being. I suppose Stairs and Floyd (less likely) could make outfield appearances, but forget about Thome and Thomas other than pinch-hitting duty.

Have a great weekend, folks.
