What are the New York Mets thinking? Am I a fan? Absolutely. Am I excited? Just like everyone else. Yet I keep thinking about other franchises that have made huge splashes and spent boat loads of money only to realize that they completely overestimated the most important aspect of any winning ball club. The Mets starting pitching, while fully loaded with able bodies, is not as dependable as we are led to believe. To hear the never sleep GM Omar Minyaya claim that there is a surplus of starters on the Mets is quite frightening. Can a major league club ever have a surplus of quality starters (Please see the 2004-2005 Yankees). There is, in my opinion, one arm that can be counted on every fifth day and that is Pedro Martinez. Tome Glavine is at best a .500 of late. Granted this was with less of a line up then the Mets will trot out next season, but he is also a year older. Kris Benson is inconsistent & has been shopped around. Trachsel is coming off surgery and then there is Heilman, Seo and Zambrano. There is no fear in facing anyone after Martinez. It was a great move acquiring Billy Wagner. Let's just hope the Mets get to use him.
