Wait!! There is actually NASCAR here....... Who'd have thunk it??
Very seldom does this blog seem to live up to it's title, but today it does (sort of)
Several websites have reported the Bill Davis is talking to buyers for his single car Cup team (and presumably his hugely successful Truck team). While reports mention "others", the one man who seems to be mentioned by name is former indycar racer Danny Sullivan.
It's far from a done deal by the sounds of it, with Sullivan quoted as saying "I've been pursuing it, but haven't gotten a response from (Davis). He's still dreaming on the price," No price is mentioned.
Of course right now BDR's Cup team is in no-mans-land. After a second team with Jacques Villeneuve lasted no longer than Daytona (in February), and long-time sponsors CAT departing to RCR's #31 team (horray!! another reason to hate RCR for Blaniacs). Even Dave Blaney's contract is up at the end of the season.
There's been no mention of the team having found a new sponsor - given Dave's record for bad luck perhaps he can pick up sponsorship from a mirror company, nor a mention of a new contract for Dave, although given Davis' career long links with Blaney you might think that Davis might look to help out Blaney if the sale goes though.
Of course there's always a horrible chance that Sullivan might recruit new drivers from what he knows. But we don't need anymore open-wheel converts do we?!
I was hoping you'd write about this. OR I would have :)
I think Dave Blaney should publicly call out Paul Menard for the ####. he is!
I hate to say this, but BDR hasn't denied any of this, and if it isn't Spin & Win Sullivan who buys them, it WILL be someone. And with Blaney's contract up at the end of this season, I foresee Michael Annett in the ride, whomever owns the team.
Lori - Thought I might have beaten you to writing about this.
BDR has been in trouble for while, earlier in the year Davis' Trucking Co. were bankrupt, so it's really a suprise it's taken this long.
Sadly, no matter what, I can't see Blaney in a Cup ride next year (it hurts saying that). I hope I'm wrong, or I at least hope a NW or truck team will pick him up.
Enough cannot be written about Paul Menard's stupidity.
Broomy - I think this will be an interesting turn of events if Sullivan buys in. Who would he hire? You almost wonder if Villeneuve isn't lurking in the shadows.
The new owner will have to start over - driver, sponsor etc. Who wants that?
Broomy, I do hope Blaney can keep racing in NASCAR as well.
Iowa brings up a great point with JV. But let's also remember that Scott Speed is just crazy good (although I don't care for his "colorful' antics) so maybe he would get the top billing?
JV needs to make up his mind what his doing. He tries his hand at Cup racing, fails, goes back to the Le Mans series in Europe, switches back and forth for select NW events. If he wants a Cup career he needs to stay in one place.
The one thing that he, or Scott Speed bring over Blaney, Annett or most others is that there is immediately some more angles to go looking for sponsors. And sponsors are probably the thing BDR needs most.
Seems as if everyone wants to get into NASCAR these days. Although I like Danny Sullivan, I wonder how he would do in the NASCAR community. ALso brings to mind who would be the driver. Valid points by IG & HFL...would be sad to see Blaney lose his ride in NASCAR though.
Just what we need in NASCAR: another rookie field filler (Michael Annett) who won't contend for a win or a top 10 finish anytime soon. At least with Blaney you can pencil him in for a few top 15's each year. Blaney does have the experience and knows the ins and outs of Cup racing. I just hope he gets a good ride next year if Bill Davis decides to sell his team.
