Rating the quarterbacks
Jul 15, 2008 | 1:53PM | report this

This is something that a lot of people do-but I have never seen a list that I totally liked, so here is mine. This is based on how I think they stack up right now-it is not a body of their work. It is comprised of projected starters (and Brett Favre):

1. Tom Brady, Patriots. He has it all and 3 rings so far.

2. Peyton Manning, Colts. I think Peyton might have just hit the downside of the career hill-still a lot of football left in him, but I think the end is closer than you might think.

3. Ben Roethlisberger, Steelers. A lot of people think Ben is overrated and a game-manager, but he really showed me that he can sling it. He will again be at the top of most every statistical category again in 2008.

4. Tony Romo, Cowboys. Some people would say I have him high on this list-but I think he will prove them wrong.

5. Drew Brees, Saints. Brees put a couple of really good seasons together-I think he gets back to form in 08.

6. Brett Favre, Packers. Brett is an all-time great and still one of the best in the game-the Pack would be foolish not to let him back.

7. Eli Manning, Giants. Being the winner of the most recent Super Bowl may have you ranked a little high, but I don't think so. He became a success last year just when people were ready to tear him apart. Sound familiar? See Tom Coughlin!

8. Donovan McNabb, Eagles. He has been injury plagued recently, but is still a top notch quarterback. When he's healthy, he is one of the few quarterbacks that instills fear in defenses.

9. David Garrard, Jaguars. He had a great season last year and expectations are high for the Jags this season. He can really elevate himself to elite status if he carries this team to a title.

10. Matt Hasselbeck, Seahawks. This guy has never been brilliant and has never been terrible. He is consistently good-that puts him here on my list.

11. Derek Anderson, Browns. See David Garrard-except that Cleveland didn't make the playoffs last year and the Jags did. Like the Jags, expectations are high in Cleveland.

12. Carson Palmer, Bengals. Most magazines/analysts rate Palmer 3rd or 4th in their rankings, but what has he ever done to deserve that? He has two dynamite receivers and he can't lead that team to the playoffs?

13. Jeff Garcia, Buccaneers. Garcia has always been a winner-he never has great stats and doesn't have a cannon for an arm, but this guy gets it done.

14. Marc Bulger, Rams. This guy was probably the most underrated QB in the league, and last year injuries just caught up to him. I think he will regain his old form in 2008 and make the Rams competitive again.

15. Jon Kitna, Lions. This poor guy has spent his career playing for bad teams. Maybe it says something about him-I don't think that is the case. I think the Lions are going to surprise some people this year and just might ....... on second thought, I'm not going there!

16. Philip Rivers, Chargers. I think he fits his team well. They need to get the ball in the hands of their two best players which happen to be a tight end and a running back. He does that well. He does not have the arm to throw the ball down the field to wide receivers though. This team only needs Rivers to get LT and Gates the ball to be successful-good thing for him.

17. Jason Campbell, Redskins. I'm going to admit, I may have him too low, but the fact is that Todd Collins came in when he got hurt and looked great. Todd FREAKING Collins! That made me think that the Skins' success didn't have as much to do with Campbell as I thought.

18. Matt Leinart, Cardinals. Matt, my man, you have to stay healthy. I have no clue if you're going to be a great NFL quarterback or if you're going to be a bust. Please stay healthy and give us a glimpse of what to expect from you.

19. Matt Ryan, Falcons. I don't usually rank rookies this high, but he has all the tools and seems like a very smart player. I hope the Vick backlash doesn't hurt this kid.

20. Matt Schaub, Texans. Last year, I bought the hype on this guy. I'm not making the same mistake this year. He's still an upgrade from David Carr, but I still think the Texans should be looking for their franchise QB.

21. Aaron Rodgers, Packers. I have one half of one game to go on-he looked pretty good, but if he starts this year instead of Favre-it could get ugly.

22. Alex Smith, 49ers. This guy has had so many different coaches and has never had a good receiving corps to throw the ball to. He will have to have the best year of his career to save his job.

23. Trent Edwards, Bills. I think in 2 years, this guy could be in the top 10 of this list, but not yet. He is raw and he still looks like he's got the deer in the headlights look. Buffalo is a tough place to play-let's see how he pans out.

24. Jay Cutler, Broncos. The lasting image I have of Cutler is Philip Rivers mocking him from the Charger sideline. I don't think he has the mental toughness to be an NFL quarterback.

25. Rex Grossman, Bears. I feel for you Bear fans. Grossman has a few good days, but when he's not on his game, OUCH! I think this will be the final year of the Rex as a Bear experiment.

26. Jake McCown, Dolphins. He's probably better than a few QB's ahead of him on this list, but playing for the Dolphins this year won't allow him to show it. He is the band-aid to give the Fins time to find a franchise quarterback. Get the ice packs ready.

27. Chad Pennington, Jets. Dead arm but he's still the best QB on the Jet roster. It should be another long season for the Jets.

28. Brodie Croyle, Chiefs. There is some potential here, but so far he hasn't shown a whole lot of it. He's got some good targets to work with and a workhorse for a running back. The time is now, Brodie!

29. Kyle Boller, Ravens. See Rex Grossman. I'm not sure why he's still hanging around in Baltimore. They already tried to get rid of him a la Steve McNair. Then they bring in the Heisman winner, Troy Smith, and now they draft Joe Flacco. Yet, Boller is the starter? Long season for the birds in purple.

30. Jake Delhomme, Panthers. I was never a big believer in Jake even though he led the Panthers to the Super Bowl. Watching him last year, I wondered if he will ever be able to throw a football again. They didn't exactly address the position as if it was a need for the team.

31. Vince Young, Titans. I must say that he fooled even me with that Rose Bowl performance. I actually thought that he could make it in the NFL after watching that game even though until that night, I said that he would never make it in the NFL. Now, I'm leaning back to thinking his playing days are numbered. He hasn't shown enough improvement and he hasn't posed as much of a problem as previously thought.

32. Tarvaris Jackson, Vikings. The Vikings roster is loaded, but the weak link is at the quarterback position. He will leave Viking fans frustrated more times than not this season unless they can pry Favre from the Packers.

33. Jamarcus Russell, Raiders. Sorry Raider fans-this pick had BUST written all over it. I see a guy that can throw a ball 70 yards, but can't complete a 5 yard screen. He doesn't have "football instincts". Another long season in the bay area.

LIL' FLYS RESPONSE TO THIS ####: AT LEAST YOU GOT ONE THING RIGHT, TOM BRADY IS #1. THE REST IS UP FOR GRABS, AND IT REALLY DOESN'T MATTER A WHO IS #2 THRU #33. AFTER ALL, THERE ARE NO THING SUCH AS 2ND PLACE IN THE SUPER BOWL. JUST ONE WINNER, AND 32 LOSERS. AND YEA, THIS LAST SUPER BOWL WAS SET UP, LIL' FLY HAS PERSONAL PROOF. THEY'LL WIN IT NEXT YEAR THOUGH, EASILYYYYYYY OVER THE COWBOYS. GUARANTEED.

Nice post and good job...but (you knew there'd be a but didn't you) I have a few problems with it.

1) Romo has to be a homer pick @ #4. How is he better than Brees? He's had better talent at WR and done less.

2)I think it's kind of early to be calling Russell a bust. I mean the kid barely played last season.

3) There is no way anyone can predict what Matt Ryan will do. That's a very bad sitiuation he's beeen placed into at Atlanta. I wouldn't have him on a list at all.

4) There is no possible way you can justify having Grossman ahead of any of those other QB's with the exception of Tavaris Jackson. Even then I might hesitate to put him ahead. That joker is the worst QB I've seen in the NFL since Danny Wuerfell. Must be a Fla. Gator.

Of course as a Seahawk fan, I have to say something. I'm not moving Hasselbeck up or down your list. Just keep in mind, Hasselbeck has NEVER had a WR like most of these other QB's.

That's all, good reading buddy.

I usually agree with you Joe, but this list, no.

How to do a best QB list....Take your favorite team and think who would be the QB you'd want on it. Brady, #1. Then if you couldn't get Brady, who would be your next choice, etc, ect, through #33.

#1, and #2 are fine, but the rest goes all to pieces.

jj i love your list... as a Vegas GUY YOU LOOK TO THE QB FOR LEADING THE TEAM TO THE BIG GAME GRANTED A HANDFUL OF BOWLS WERE WON BY AVERAGE GUYS , OVERALL THEY WERE SOLID FOOTBALL PEOPLE WHO HAD THE COOL UNDER FIRE AND MADE THE PLAYS TO WIN AND DIDN'T SCREW -UP TO LOSE...EXAMPLE'S BRAD JOHNSON,TRENT DILFER.
FACTS; THERE ARE AT LEAST 10 ON YOUR LIST WHO WILL NOT BE IN THE LEAGUE MORE THAN NEXT YEAR.
I DISAGREE WITH YOU ON JAMARCUS RUSSEL I THINK WE NEED TO GIVE HIM SOME MORE TIME....I'VE SEEN ENOUGH OF V. YOUNG, T.JACKSON,KYLE BOLLER,CHAD PENNINGTON AND REX GROSSMAN TO NAME A HANDFULL AND THERE ARE MORE ...TO COME TO THE CONCLUSION THEY CANT PLAY AT THIS LEVEL.
I'VE BEEN ON BOTH SIDES OF THE FAVRE ISSUE . BUT THE REALITY IS WE IN VEGAS HAVE BIG ACTION ON A.RODGERS GETTIN' HURT AND GOIN' ON IR FOR THE SEASON...FAVRE IS A SOAP OPERA BUT COULD START AND PLAY AT A SUSTAINED LEVEL FOR AT LEAST 25 OF THE 31 TEAMS AND THE REST WOULD LOVE TO HAVE HIM AS A BACK-UP.
KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK YOUR SPOTS CAN BE DEBATED , BUT YOU HAVE THE INSIGHT ON THE TALENT FACTOR.

Hey Joe - Decent list. I don't really see a problem until I see Eli so high on the list. As early as December last year, the fans, team mates and media were marching towards his house with lanterns and pitchforks in the middle of the night to run him out of town.

I'd move Hasselbeck and Garrard up a couple of notches.

I'd also drop Grossman to the very bottom, but first I'd hit the space bar a few times to separate the crowd from him.

Thank you very much for giving Big Ben is due props. That manager stuff is a bunch of #### left over from his rookie year. The offense was run through him last year, and he responded with his best year. 2006 was a mulligan year, and he has proven he certainly has big game talent. I'll scream for as long as I can, yes Ben played awful in the Super Bowl, but he was the biggest reason why the Steelers got there.

And also, finally someone is with on Carson Palmer. I don't doubt his ability, but he lacks intangibles and has lived off a single regular season in '05. People want to put him at the top of the heap of NFL QBs when he isn't even the best in his division. Just in case you want proof of that, vs. Big Ben head-to-head: 2-7.

Wait, you watched Jake Delhomme? Clearly not. In the three games he played, he had the highest quarterback rating in the entire league. And all of those rookies over him? I mean, getting to the Super Bowl, then having above average to outstanding seasons through 2003 - 2005 has to count for something. While he's not Brady or Manning and never will be, he's definitely not the 30th worst quarterback in the league. More realistically he's around 16.

As a life long Bears fan I have to disagree with Rex Grossman's rating....it's TOO HIGH!! He sucks! He should be last of the worst.

Also, I don't think he'll be the Bears starter this year after September. He usually practices great so he'll beat out Kyle Orton in the pre-season, but after an 0-4 or 1-3 start, Kyle will replace him and produce much better results.

Also, Tony Romo at #4? Puh-leeaase!!

Lil Fly is a little stupid. You have personal proof that the Super Bowl was set-up? How did you obtain that proof? Did you break into the NFL Headquarters and steal the blueprints? Thats bogus and you know it. The Cowboys are garbage.
Colts will yet again be a contender in the Playoffs, but watch out for Drew Bees and The Saints.

Yeah, I'm a Panthers fan, so of course I'm going to have some sort of bias here...but the only reason I can imagine he is so low on your list is due to your doubts about coming back from injury (although apparently his rehab has gone well). The guy had great stats for the 3 games he participated in: 55 of 86 (64%) for 634 yards, 8 TDs and 1 inteception. That's a QB rating of 111+. Those aren't numbers indicative of a 30th rated QB.

Do I think he should top 10? Hell no, but there's no way he's lower than 20th in this league.

Did Matt Leinart Win Rookie of The Year?? or take his team to the Playoffs his second year?? Young being that low is retarded!!! the kid is a winner just because he does not have that good of stats puts him at the bottom you have to be kidding me!!!!

No way I'd put OVERRATED Favre at this point in his career over Eli Manning, McNabb, Garrard, Hasselback, Palmer, Garcia, or Philip Rivers.

Last season was a fluke for Favre. His two or three years prior to last year were the Favre I know; too many risky/dumb decisions which led to a lot of INTs and losses for the Packers.

Green Bay needs to move on without him. He's had his time; now its over and he can't accept it.

Are you Freakin kidding me? Some of the comments you people are writing DO NOT even make sense. Your saying Romo should not be ahead of Brees because he has done less with more. First off, thats a LIE. Look at Romos stats since being a starter, look at Brees stats during the same time period, ROMO IS BETTER.

If your going to rank a QB based on WHO he is throwing to, then you have to lower both Brady and Manning which OBVIOUSLY doesnt make since.

But also, by making those type of comments and then to say Vince Young has been a bust is also DUMN. WHO THE HELL HAS HE HAD TO THROW TO.

Then Jamarcuss Russell. The Guy has only played TWO GAMES!!! Give him a Damn chance.

Here is my list:

1) Manning- Pick Brady all you want, this is MY list and I think Peyton reads the field better.

2) Brady- Who else would it be

3)Romo- Hate him all you want, the guy has only PRODUCED since becoming a starter. 1 1/2 years, I dont think Brady or Manning won a playoff game by that time either!!!

4)Brees- Close behind Romo

5)Favre- All you Favre haters that think he's done, since when is 4155 yards, 28 TD to only 15 int, and a 95.7 RTG done. THIS IS HIS STATS FOR LAST SEASON!

6)Palmer- Seriously, what qb still performs at his level with all the distractions his team faces EVERY year!

7)Anderson- You have him at 11, ARE YOU KIDDING. The season he had, AND HE PLAYS FOR THE BROWNS. He HAS to be good!

8)Hasselbeck- More consitent than big Ben

9)Big Ben- The guy is a warrior, great season last year, but not consistent

10) Philip Rivers- still growing

11)Garrard- also still growing, and steadily improving

12) Jay Cutler- Makes alot of good decisions, again, another young qb improving

13) McNabb- #8 SERIOULSY! and you think FAVRE IS DONE!

14) Eli Manning- Ok, he has a ring, well so does Dilfer, you dont see him on this list. Manning still only threw 23 TD to 20 INT

15) Vince Young- LAST- WHO THE HELL DOES HE HAVE, Yet he STILL pushes this team towards the playoffs

The rest you can rank how you please. There not really worth the time. HOWEVER, GROSSMAN is who you would find at the bottom of my list. Other than Ryan Leaf, has a QB EVER SU C'D SO BAD!

You would also NOT find ROOKIES on my list. THEY HAVENT EVEN TAKEN A

For full disclosure, I am not a Favre fan. I never have been. Favre is no Peyton Manning or Tom Brady. If he were, he'd have more than one ring.

And he definitely is not a Joe Montana, despite Favre thinking he is.

It's time to dethrone this wanna-be king and send him packing. If he had any legacy, it is in shatters now.

The thing I will most remember about his legacy on a weak team in a weak conference in a weak division during his tenure is that he threw the most interceptions of any quarterback -- this against teams that could barely field pro secondaries.

In other words, Favre is overrated and Brady and Manning should be at the tip top. Some day, fans will accept Brady as being the greatest of his generation, just as Montana was the greatest of his.

It's not like the Packers Admin don't already think they're gods...

Y'all ought to see what we need to go thru to get Disabled Seating tickets for games... Abled bodied families can bring their kids (more then 2 tickets) but if you're have to sit in Disabled seating sections, you can only buy 2 tickets!!! The Packers management do what they want when they want and give a care less if it's right or not. Someone should go under cover and try to buy 3 (yeah 3) tickets for a regular season game and see what rubbish you get. They're kooks and ignore what's right (like giving a release to a player that hasn't chance to start) as well as ignoring simple laws that further segregate disabled fans by having a TWO TICKET DISABLED SEATING ONLY POLICY!!!

Who do I take, my wife, my attendant (if I needed one), or my son??? And, we can buy Disabled tix over the phone like other stadiums, or fax like other stadiums. The Packers ticket office do VERY LITTLE to provide the same fairness as they would Able Bodied Packer fans!!!

Maybe someone can remind them they're owned by a government entity and are to comply with rules set up to prevent this sort of discrimination... Or of course, lose ANY funding they get from the state or federal level i.e., Parking, Public Safety, EEO, etc. When we're done talking about Favre's deadlock, they could alert the press or ACLU about this crime as well. Somebody needs to make things right for the Disabled fans that love football and love the GB Packers!

I am so #### tired of every joe blow saying Aaron Rodgers is going to be somebody because he threw 1 TD against the Cowboys, coming in off the bench after the Packers were getting blown away.

News flash Nerds. The defense lets up during butt whooppings like that when the starting QB gets yanked because he stinks.

Whats this nonsense about only one half to go on?

What about when Rodgers was awful against the Ravens as a rookie, and was even worse when he subbed for Favre against the Patriots??

I can't effffing wait for this season to start so that when Rodgers sucks like he will. I'm going to torment the #### out of you Packer #### over how awful Rodgers is

Ummm, Kurt Warner? 11 starts and 27 TDs leading the Cards to 8-8 ( 9-7 if Rackers hits that 33 yarder in week 12 )

I'd say he's 9th. Certainly better than Leinart for one.

"Palmer... vs. Big Ben head-to-head: 2-7."

How exactly does a head to head match up determine who is the better QB??

Hm..let's see about this, Cincinnati's receivers are indeed a bit better, but where does Cincy's defense rank (close to dead last) compared to Pittsburgh's D (close to the top)?? Fairly sure Palmer can't control the fact that his defense has a million holes in it.

This list is a joke in so many ways.

1. You state that Carson Palmer can't lead the Bengals to the playoffs. Actually, he has. The Bengals won their division in 2005. It's not him keeping them from making the playoffs, it's the Bengals terrible defense.

2. Have you ever seen JaMarcus Russell play? I doubt it.

3. Jake McCown?????

Thanks for the respect for Ben. If I was going to ever call a ranking perfect, it would be this. I can't call him better than Brady or Manning however, this Ben bashing is insane.

The guy was on his butt the second most times in the NFL and STILL through 32TD's against only eleven picks during the regular season. Keeping in mind that he had a new coach and offensive coordinator also.

Okay, so what were Carsons stats like last year compared to Bens? It's okay, you can say it.

Here is my problem with your list it SUCKS! You put Derek Anderson, Carson Palmer, Matt Schaub and Jake Delhome way too low. Not to mention Grossman too high, and how can anyone be lower than Alex Smith at this point. Jemarcus at 33rd Dude your retarded. Obviously your not really ranking the QB's but letting a teams success (past) determine who the best QB's are.

why dont you just put him in the top 3 of all time too. he is #1 in interceptions-288.top 3 in fumbles -118 #2 in all time lost yards (sacks] 2888 yards.the man is the most over rated q.b in history.if it werent for reggie white he wouldnt even have a ring.he may have the strongest arm of all time but he never protected the football and thats his #1 job.
