Love It or Hate It...NFL needs a Dance-Off
Dec 13, 2005 | 10:42AM | report this

I'm a regular viewer of the NFL Network.  But more and more, I've been tuning in much more then normal.  Not because it's close to playoff time, or because Rich Eisen, Rod Woodsen or Terrell Davis has an exclusive.  Or not even because I wondered what happened to Butch Davis when he left the Browns last year.  It's one reason- the NFL Dance Off commercials.

Okay, let me just say that I am an avid fan of these commercials for a number of reasons.  First off, it shows me that these athletes like to have fun just like we do.  We love to glorify athletes and make them out to be larger then life.  But they are just humans that are gifted in their profession.  Another reason why I would like to see this, is because the NFL isn't big on the celebratory dances.  They pick and choose each week which ones are fine worthy and which ones they let slid- THAT week.

So, I want to start a petition.  Stop it with the commercials.  I want to see a weekly half-hour show of the players showcasing their other talents, or their 2 left feet.  You can either dance solo, or as a group.  The show should allow the fans to choose who should go to the next round, and the winner gets money to go to a charity of their choice.

The contest should be broken down by a couple of categories: Creativity, How well you do your routine, and crowd response.

Just imagine Chad Johnson and his Riverdance routine against Hines Ward and his Ickey Shuffle tribute.  Or have Steve Smith's changing the baby routine go up against Keenan McCardell's waiter impression (yes, I know T.O. did it first, but his 15 minutes is up, as far as I'm concerned).

You can have the Colts special teams doing their infamous sway (which I haven't seen all year.  Wonder why.....) against the mighty Pats team, which we only get a taste of when we see the commercials.

How about seeing Joey Porter's kicking-of-the-sand routine against Ray Lewis' kicking fist-pump?  Whose routine is better?  Decisions, decisions............

And to top it off, you can have an Old School show that showcases our favorite Hall of Famers going at it.  Like Deion Sanders and his skip against whatever Jerry Rice is planning to do on Dancing With the Stars.  I know I would pay money to see Joe Montana go head to head against Dan Marino.

Since the NFL has their heads still buried in the sand, they haven't realized that this is the new school NFL. They still don't allow players to express themselves once they reach the end zone. Sports are a form of entertainment, so why not let the players further entertain us with dance celebrations that don't offend your opponent, or anyone else?  This show would allow the players to get their frustrations out, and put on their best performance off the field.

So, to the NFL Network, I beg of you.  Make a real NFL Dance Off.  People like myself, who have way too much time on their hands, will tune in.  Mark my words.
