Best Football Player Ever
Jul 03, 2008 | 1:48PM | report this

There are so many greats... Jim Brown, Walter Payton, Brett Favre, Dan Marino, Chuck Bednarik, Otto Graham etc.

I think the best player ever in the NFL was Sammy Baugh. I think this for a number of reasons...

1.) He played offense, defense and special teams.

2.) He led the league in passing, punting and interceptions all in one year!

3.)He changed how the quarterback played the game. He was on one of the first teams who consistently passed the ball.

Need I say more?... It's not for sure but I think he was and will always be the best ever. Please tell me what you think... and why.

Are you nuts! It's Michael Vick.
Just kidding.

Unfortunately, the Best Ever tag gets dilluted as we talk of different eras.
I never saw Slinging Sammy, so I can't go pro or con.

Marcus Allen was the greatest. He just got slammed by one of the worst to ever be associated with the game---Al Davis!!!

U know I overlooked Marcus Allen. He not only a great runner and a reciever, he was one of the best blocking running backs ever... good pick.

I think I have to agree, SLINGIN Sammy Baugh was the only player to admit he would have played for free. In an era where players had to hold down a job AND play football, he had class and style!

BTW, if Barry Sanders had played for the cowboys instead of Emmit Smith, I believe he would have pushed the rushing record so far out of reach they would talk about the rushing record in MILES instead of yards.

I can't argue with any of you that all of these guys should be mentioned. To me, though, the best ever is Walter Payton.

When he retired he had the record for most yards rushing - for a team where he was the ONLY real offensive threat until the last few years of his career. Until Marcus Allen did it better, Peyton was the best at receiving out of the backfield.

He played QB for the Bears in one of their rare playoff appearances prior to Jim McMahon joining the team.

For all those years, he was the team's back-up punter and placekicker.

But the thing that makes him the best, IMHO, is that he blocked. Well enough so that Roland Harper was a significant runner in his own right, and even hit 1,000 one year. I think the only two feature backs who ever managed that other than Payton were Franco Harris and Larry Csonka.

The world is a poorer place without Sweetness. That does not have anything to do with this blog, except that it is the one thing that has been said here that nobody can debate.

The fact that he will show up, even the day or week
or the 1st game, he should get his starting job back Rodgers reminds me of the Rich Campbell deal.
He simply is not an NFL quaeterback and never be.
He just does not have the talent. With him at quaterback, The Wisconsin colege Badgers could
beat him

Tom Brady no brainer he led patriots to 4 Super Bowls and won 3. He has the all-time record for wins in a season 18, most touchdowns 50 and most points ever in a season. He is emortal he is the best and will always be the best

I think Barry sanders is one of the most overrated 'backs there ever was. I say this because he really didn't help his team win. Ist half would always be low yards, sometimes even negative yards. He would light the opponent up in the second half but by then they would already have been down a couple scores.
Marcus Allen had a pretty accurate pass for very rarely chucking it. So, he is the complete package.
Don't forget Jim Thorpe!

Each position is apples and oranges and peaches to compare.

Making a best evaluation is fruity.
