ACC PROVING MEDIOCRITY
Mar 22, 2008 | 2:12PM | report this

I said it all season and it’s true: The ACC was a mediocre conference this year.

Other than North Carolina, the league was down. Usually, it’s the top conference in America – but not this time.

Clemson bowed out to Villanova in the first round and after dodging an upset against Belmont in the first round, Duke is gone after a second-round loss to West Virginia.

Two other leagues have shown their mortality so far: the Pac-10 and SEC. The Pac-10, widely regarded as the top regular-season conference in America this year, has already lost 50 percent of its six teams in the first round.

Ditto for the SEC, which saw Vanderbilt, Georgia and Kentucky fall out in the first round.

I maintained that the Big East was set up to have the most tournament success – and it hasn’t let me down. Seven of its eight teams advanced – and West Virginia is in the Sweet 16 after a victory over Duke.

The Big 12 has exceeded my expectations with Baylor as the lone team in the league to bow out in the first round.

Everyone said the SEC was the worst conference, but they went 3-3 which isn't bad. We beat a Big Ten team and a holier than thou Pac 10 team. Go SEC

NO CONF. SHOULD GET 8 TEAMS IN EVER!!

THE BIG EAST STILL MAY ONLY GET ONE (1)
INTO THE SWEET 16 AND THEY GOT LUCKY.
DUKE DON'T BEAT THEMSELFS VERY OFTEN.

VA TECH SHOULD HAVE GOT IN.
9-7 ACC / NOVA GETS NO CREDIT THEY ARE
IN THE NIT AT BEST IN MY BOOK.
CLEMSON SHOULD HAVE RAN THEM OFF THE COURT
LIKE N.C. STATE DID EARLIER THIS YEAR.

AT ANY RATE ZERO BIG EAST IN FINAL FOUR
JUST NO WAY ANY OF THEM WILL BE AROUND!!
SORRY YOU DON'T KNOW ENOUGH TO BE DOING WHAT YOU

THE ANNUAL TOP TEN LIST OF THINGS THAT DUKE WILL BE DOING WHILE UNC PLAYS FOR THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

# 10. Immediate post season surgery at the world renowned Duke Clinic on Greg Paulus to remove Danny Green's right testicle from a torn cavity in Paulus's lower esophagus. This will cancel Paulus's expected appearance at the upcoming Espy's to collect his shoo-in Espy for Top Video Moment of the 2008 Year to be presented by Vince Carter and that poor unfortunate seven foot Frenchman, the 2004 winners.

#9. After Lamarcus Nelson's last three games, he will be traveling with his agent on a Discovery Tour of some of world's lesser known pro hoop franchises. Early indications are that he will either sign with the BLEEPledesh Rice Krispies of the RiceDiet Only Asian League or ink a short term pact with the always competitive Limoge Laceknickers in the brutal Belgian ninth division.

#8. Coach K will begin work early Monday morning with the floundering Hillary Clinton Campaign.
Politico is reporting that he intends to make the argument that West Virginia is a small state and should not even have been in the tournament and will be looking for enough superdelegates to overturn today's result.

#7. Assistant Coaches Wojo and Chrissie Collins has been given the task to recruit some more sharpshooters for Duke's famous pre Christmas, traveling Three Point Shooting Exhibition Team that fools many people in the country into thinking that they might actually have a chance in the NCAA tournament come March. Special consideration will be given to abnormally thin players who

THE ANNUAL TOP TEN LIST OF THINGS THAT DUKE WILL BE DOING WHILE UNC PLAYS FOR THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

#6. Attendance will be mandatory for all Duke Post Players to attend Cherokee Park's Annual Big Man Clinic to be held this offseason at Cameron Indoor Arena on April 8th from 10AM to 10:10AM. Shavlik Randolph will be giving the keynote address this year on "Duke Power Footwork - How to go from the next Bill Walton to the very end of the bench in Memphis is Three Short Steps!"

#5. Speaking of dominating Big Men, I can now confirm that Josh McRoberts will be back in a Duke uniform for the 2008-2009 season. One does not lose his amateur eligibility by appearing in just four minutes of a California Developmental League summer game at the Burbank Gym and having your shot stuffed by an aging but still tough Trajan Langford who led the CDL in traveling calls for the sixth consecutive year.

#4. Rumors that Gerald Henderson is going to turn pro this summer are just not true. Gerald will not be able to put his name in the NBA draft until he completes the second half of his 365 day sentence for last year's unprovoked attack on POY Tyler Hansbrough. He will be presenting a moving conference to a multitude of Durham middle schools during the summer sessions on "Playing Nice and Playing Fair" with former Durham prosecutor, Mike Nifong.

#3. Super Frosh Kyle Singler is off to the Virgin Islands for some well deserved rest and relaxation after his sterling freshmen campaign. Singler is under program orders to get a deep tan on the trip - his non exposure to the sun due to his heavy indoor practice schedule this year caused his skin take on an almost translucent quality which made him virtually invisible for Duke's last ten games.

#2. Early indications are that Coach K is going to reconfigure the 2009-2010 season schedule to make sure that the Blue Devils do NOT host the UNC TarHeels in the last regular season game of the year for the traditional Seniors Night. It doesn't make alot of sense to browbeat somebody's kid with inappropriate language and ethics for four years and then invite his parents to his final home game to watch him get the absolute BLEEP between out of him. Right now, it looks like Guilford will step into UNC's traditional spot as Belmont disqualified themselves by almost beating the Blue Devils the other night after scoring on a NCAA record 32 back door cuts.

and the NUMBER ONE thing that Duke will be doing while UNC competes for yet another National Championship is

#1. See if Bobby Knight needs a job!

Looks like you spoke to soon, Big East bowed down like the overated biatches they are, sorry first round games dont much matter, and the top three in the pac10 already in the 16, big east at best can get three into sixteen and started with one extra team so now your completely proved to be another hot airbag. lol thanks for salting the east stupid lmao.

You shouldn't diss the PAC-10. They have 3 teams in the Sweet 16, and a depleted Arizona team did much better against West Virginia than Duke. The ACC, especially the Dookies, are over-hyped and over-rated. The Big East (will have 2-4 teams in the Sweet 16) and the PAC 10 (3 in already) are by far the two best conferences from top to bottom. Even the SEC goes much deeper than the ACC.

The ACC is far from mediocre. Things have been disappointing this year, but let's not start making crazy statements. Also, I don't see him getting on Florida State or Ohio State, teams who played each other in the National Championship last year and went MIA this year in the big dance.

Georgetown just went down, tripled with going 0 for 2 yesterday heads up with the PAC10, there is no argument who the best conference is. Case closed. ACC has one team left so there out, Only conference that can be compared to the PAC is the BIG12 Big east just has a lot of teams, and got too many teams in but, Notre Dame, Marquette, Georgetown, Notre Dame and UCONN all go bye bye, notice this BLEEP is scared to come back and admit he was wrong as 5 of his conferences top 6 teams didnt even make the sweet sixteen, and lousville hasnt got in yet. Nova got lucky with an easy second round game, so pacten which deserved seven teams and only got 6 has got three in and Big east which deserved 4 and got in 8 is at best looking at 3.

NOVA GOT VA TECH'S SPOT
THE ACC SHOULD HAVE GOT 5

NO CONF EVER SHOULD MORE THAN 6

THE BIG EAST GOT 1/8 OF THE FIELD

VA. TECH WAS 9-7 IN THE ACC

THERE WILL BE ZERO BIG EAST IN THE
FINAL FOUR.

YOU WASTED 1/8 OF THE TOURNEYMENT
DAVIDSON COULD HAVE WON YUR CONF.

NOT SO SURE THEY WANT GO FINAL FOUR NOW!

IF VA. TECH HAD STAYED IN THE BIG EAST THEY
WOULD HAVE FINISHED 3RD AT WORST AND GO IN
AHEAD OF 5 OTHER BIG EAST TEAMS. THERE IS JUST KNOW DOUBT ABOUT IT.

IT is absolutely ridiculous that the bigeast got in eight, they should be forced to cut that conference down, all conferences should have a schedule that can accomadate playing each team in the conference at home on the road, otherwise how can anyone get a real grasp on who should get in. There should be a limit of 6 per conference i totally agree jbsmut. No way can you ever justify eight in from a major conference and four from another there is just not that big a disparity between conferences ever, what the bigeast benefits from is very poor teams at the bottom of its conference, where the pac10 had 9 teams that posed a threat on any given night and had to play each team home and away. Well it shows as the PAC10 ended up with the strongest showing getting 3 of six to final sixteen while big east got 3 of eight, I am sure the pac10 could have got one more in if they had let ASU and CAL into the dance.

It's unwise to judge the strength of a conference solely on a one and done tournament in which matchups ususally determine the winnner. The Big East did well this weekend, but its easier to have more teams left standing when you have more teams in in the first place. The ACC was hurt by one of its hottest teams, Va. Tech, getting hosed out of the tourney despite finishing above .500 in the No. 1 rated rpi league during the regular season. Meanwhile Arizone gets in on the strength of its name despite finishing 8-10 in its league and losing to the ACC's 10th place team, Virginia, during the reular season. Also Clemson got a terrible draw in the opening round as Villanova should not be a 12 seed. Their poise, coaching, and tournament experience allowed them to beat a better Clemson team. I thought Miami aquitted themselves well againt Texas and Carolina is probably going to win the whole thing. So I think bashing the ACC is out of order.

Goodman is right. The ACC is down this year. I'm a Tarheel fan as well as an ACC fan. I've seen enough games to know he's right. And believe me....I hate to admit it.

I've said it before...Goodman is terrible. He supports NBA prospects and programs that bring them in. He is not a college basketball fan or analyst.

THE BIG EAST - give me a break. They have more teams OUT of the tournament than any other league at this point and he is talking about them being the best. Goodman's philosophy is if they are a big program, they are his team or at least will get his media attention.

This guy hasn't written one article about Davidson or Western Kentucky, despite them knocking off Big East powers.

Fox Sports should seriously consider reviewing the body of work that he has contributed during the NCAA and see how completely incorrect and BORING his stories are. He is not controversial...he's just wrong.

obviously noone likes this nucklehead as most of his blogs have no comment, we only comment when his overwhelming stupidity shines. At least mike kahn clarifies himself in his blog and responds when he says something stupid. This guy is an embarrasment, I guess Foxsports cant land any good writers because espn gets the few decent college minds that are out there, most intelligent people who would make good analysis have real jobs.

Jeff, I certainly give you high marks for bravery. Instead of simply reporting on the NCAA basketball scene, you continue to prognosticate, undeterred (or oblivious) to your dismal record. Your entry in the "Beat Jeff Goodman" challenge is ranked 587 of 678 entries. In truth, that should be 587 of 665 entries as some people registered but did not fill in the brackets. I really admire your no quit spirit.

Here's a suggestion. Next year, when you're about to decide which conferences are up and which are down, let's have some rules. Exactly what is it that defines a conference? Is it RPI? Well, that didn't work this year. Is it strength of non-conference schedule (like ASU)? Perhaps it would be nice if some of those tough non-conference games were winners (unlike ASU).

Keep up the good work. Maybe rub a little salt water on your skin to toughen it up a bit.
