The 12-member squad of the Pan Am Games was selected a few days ago. The team left Philadelphia to train for a few days in Washington, D.C, before leaving for Brazil – where the competition will take place from July 25-29.
Here’s one observer’s take on the Pan Am Games team that has been working out on Philly for the past week or so:
Most Impressive: Roy Hibbert, Georgetown – ``The fact that he consistently competes and how hard he plays all the time. There’s been six or seven days of double-sessions and for him to continue to play at such a high level – when other guys get tired – has been extremely impressive.”
Biggest Surprise: Eric Maynor, VCU - ``He’s a mid-major guy whose been able to more than hold his own. He can run a team, create his shot off the dribble. You always fear when someone steps up a level, but he’s clearly able to play at a high level.”
Shan Foster, Vanderbilt - ``He’s got a great attitude and is always making plays. He’s involved in a lot of plays and plays with a lot of energy.”
Drew Neitzel, Michigan State - ``What has impressed me is his toughness, feistiness and confidence.”
Kyle Weaver, Washington State - ``He does a lot of little things and is always involved on the defensive end and is making things happen.”
Derrick Low, Washington State - ``He’s a solid, tough point guard who can knock down shots and he plays with a lot of confidence.”
Maarty Leunen, Oregon - ``He’s very steady and does a nice job offensively of playing within himself. He gets things done and comes up with timely baskets.”
Wayne Ellington, North Carolina - ``He’s really been knocking down shots. I knew he could shoot it, but when you leave him open, it’s a wrap. It’s going in. His defense has been improving.”
Scottie Reynolds, Villanova - ``He’s consistently knocking down shots and brings great energy. He’s also familiar with Coach (Jay) Wright’s system, which helps.”
D.J. White, Indiana - ``He’s done a real good job scoring in the post. He’s crafty and does a nice job reading the defense. He knows where the double-team is coming from and is patient. He doesn’t go too fast.”
Joey Dorsey, Memphis - ``He’s an animal. He plays with great energy and attacks the rim.”
James Gist, Maryland - ``He’s a good inside-out guy. He can knock down mid-range shots and he gives the team good length. He’s someone who is so long and he can create problems for a perimeter four-man and also in the post.”
Hibbert...you don't need to be a rocket scientist to know this guy is the MAN. Just watch him play...size, nice hands, and the smarts that go along with all the classics that went through G-Town. Also...Scottie Reynolds from Nova...another no brainer...if anyone saw this guy TEAR-IT-UP last year as a freshman in the BEST & TOUGHEST conference in all the NCAA (Big-East for those who might be stuck in the past thinking I am talking about the ACC or any other conference that might have 1 or 2 good teams in it, well, now you are a bit smarter). Heck, who knows, depending on which NBA teams picking and if Scottie stays or goes...it's quite possible for a 1-2 RH-SR draft (OK, that's a bit much I admit but both lottery for sure). Yeah...Big East junkie if you couldn't tell (and Univ.New Mexico fan). Oh well, PanAM games...just another time where our college kids work the competition. Back to the Olympics with the youngens?
wow. muskiemaddness, u really dont kno wut the heck you're talkin bout. if hibbert was so good why didnt he go into the draft? because he heard greg oden was in it and was chicken not to be picked first because he knew greg would.
Drew Neitzel is a tough competitor who will come through for you with tough shots in tough situations. Drew did all year for MSU. Plus he is great at seeing the complete floor and finding the open man and setting screens. He is one great player who has been underrated for most of his college career except for those of us here at EL.
spheres, i dont know if that is chicken or being an intelligent person. I mean all the hype surrounded Oden so everyone knew the 1-2 combo was Oden-Durant (in whatever order you wanted). Now Hibbert has a chance to be a beast and be THE guy on a team that will have a strong chance to go deep in the tourney. I'm sure that will help boost his stock somewhat. Chicken or intelligent? You tell me.
Hibbert definitely made the right move by playing another year at Gtown. If Gtown has one other player that steps up next year, they will be a final four team. And even if no one else steps up, Hibbert is going to have a MONSTER year, dominating the paint in the Big East. He just guaranteed himself a #1 overall draft pick by not going pro this year. That equates to a difference of almost 2 mil. You do the math!
I want to know what the NCAA is doing to stop College ref's and more importantly college players from fixing games. College players dont make ANY money so it seems that they would be most at risk for cheating. NBA ref's make a TON more money than NCAA ref's so whats stopping them from filling their pockets? I WANT TO KNOW WHAT IS BEING DONE! Because we all know that IT IS HAPPENING
