Coaches are still on the
road, but we returned back to Boston for the day to spent a day or so with the family
before heading out to the Peach Jam (the best tournament in July) on early
Thursday morning.
Here are a few tidbits:
- No truth to the rumor that Rex Walters is leaving Florida Atlantic for the
NBA.
Walters told FOXSports.com that he did have conversations with Stan Van Gundy
after he took over with the Orlando Magic, but Walters has decided to remain
with FAU. ``There’s no truth to it,” Walters said. “We talked – and Stan’s a
great guy – but it’s been resolved now for a couple of weeks.”
- While Duke big man Brian Zoubek should be back in plenty of time for the
start of practice, the last thing that the Blue Devils needed was a major
injury to their lone big man. Zoubek, with the loss of Josh McRoberts to the
NBA, will be counted upon heavily – and he can’t afford time away from the
court. Duke’s backup in the middle isn’t pretty: 6-foot-8 athlete Lance Thomas,
who yearns to be a three-man.
- Indiana guard A.J. Ratliff, according to sources, has some
academic work to do in order to be eligible for the first semester. He’s
currently taking summer classes in Bloomington.
- Harvard has admitted Cem Dinc, who played sparingly at Indiana his freshman season before heading to Marshalltown Community
College in Iowa last season. The 6-foot-10 athletic big man became
sick late in his freshman year and returned home to Germany, thus forcing him to go to a junior college. Dinc
could be a huge get for new Crimson coach Tommy Amaker.
- The 2007 FIBA U19 World Championships get underway tomorrow in Serbia with the U.S. team facing Mali in the preliminary round. There will be several
colleges represented – including Memphis, Arizona and Texas.
- The USC staff has been blown away thus far with O.J
Mayo since he arrived on campus. He’s playing with the pro players at UCLA each
day and also working out at USC every day. The Trojans are also expected to
take a trip to Puerto
Vallarta, Mexico, over Labor Day so that they can get 10 practices and
exhibition games with their heralded freshman class – which includes Mayo and
Davon Jefferson.
- Bob Bass of Our Savior maintains that 7-foot-2 big man John Riek is staying
at the school and not heading to Winchendon. This is one to keep an eye on over
the next week or so.
- New Santa Clara coach Kerry Keating got his first commitment from
6-foot-1 Highland Park (Texas) point guard Troy Alexander. He’s a smart, heady
floor leader who makes good decisions and compares to former Duke point guard
Steve Wojciechowski.
I sure wish Mayo and USC would take a trip to Lexington. Once they finished looking in Awe at Rupp Arena, then the NEW Wildcats could show them what is going to put Kentucky in the Final Four this year.
