Donovan Reversing Field
Jun 04, 2007 | 8:20AM | report this
The Orlando Magic may want to take down the photo on the front page of their web site. http://www.nba.com/magic/Donovan_Splash.html - The one of Billy Donovan smiling with a ball in his hands.

``Bringing Championship Spirit to Orlando,” it reads alongside Donovan’s picture.

It looks as though Donovan will be bringing that championship spirit back to the college ranks.

If Billy Donovan does end up coming back to Gainesville, no one will be happier than Nick Calathes and Chandler Parsons.

The in-state duo and most heralded of Donovan’s handful of incoming freshman was ecstatic to hear that he may be getting out of his deal with the Orlando Magic and returning to Florida.

``When I heard he was leaving, I was so upset because he was one of the main reasons I came there,” Parsons said. “Last night when I heard he might be coming back, it was a dream come true for me. It made everything better.”

People have to understand that Donovan over-analyzes just about everything. It didn’t help the Magic brass that Donovan remained in Gainesville this past weekend to work camp.

``He was totally stressed out,” said one person close to Donovan.

One person close to Donovan said he was shocked to hear that Donovan would be living in a condo in Orlando while his family remained in Gainesville for much of the year.

``That doesn’t sound like Billy,” the source said. “He wants to be around his kids.”

HUSKY ROAR

Northeastern coach Bill Coen made a good pickup a couple of weeks ago, but it wasn’t a player.

Coen hired Marquette director of operations Todd Townsend, who also started every game for the Golden Eagles in their Final Four run. Townsend replaces Uka Agbai, who got the bug to continue his playing career overseas.

``He’ll be a head coach at a young age,” Marquette coach Tom Crean said. “He’s overcome a lot of adversity and has always been successful. He treats people the right way, has great work ethic and is very smart. It was a good move for him so he could be a full-time coach and go out recruiting.”

Coen loses a trio of seniors off last year’s team, but he’ll have two frontcourt transfers that sat out a year ago – former Dayton forward Chris Alvarez and former UT-San Antonio 6-foot-9 big man Nkem Ojougboh.

``He’s athletic,” Coen said of Ojougboh. “He and Chris will give us a couple of experienced big guys up front.”

However, the team will likely be designed around last year’s CAA Freshman of the Year, versatile guard Matt Janning.

Janning averaged 11.6 points, 4.5 boards and was also second on the team in assists last season.

``He’s got a big heart, is fearless and is a tough kid,” Coen said of his latest diamond in the rough (he found Troy Bell, Craig Smith, Jared Dudley and Tyrese Rice while an assistant at BC).

Coen also said his non-conference schedule won’t be much easier than it was last season when he had UConn, Syracuse, Boston College, Louisville and Pittsburgh on the slate. This season it’ll be UConn, Syracuse, BC, Illinois and Maryland.

JAMES ON FENCE

Crean said that Dominic James, who had an erratic Orlando Pre-Draft Camp this past week, is still on the fence about whether to return to Marquette next season.

``No matter what happened, he’s learned a lot about his game,” Crean said. “Both of us learned that he needs to make better decisions and he needs to run a team better. If he’s back, this process will definitely make our team better.”

Crean said that James will work out for Houston tomorrow in Orlando.

``NBA teams will chart his course over the next few days,” Crean said. “He did some good things, but now it’s a matter of how the decision-makers in the NBA see it.”

ARIZONA ASSISTANT VISITS LEXINGTON

Arizona assistant Josh Pastner visited Lexington to talk to new Kentucky coach Billy Gillispie this past weekend about the final opening on the UK staff.

Pastner is one of the top recruiters in the country and has played and coached under Lute Olson for his entire career.

PAN AM GAMES INVITEES

The following 30 players have been invited to the Pan American Games Team Trials from July 12-14 at Haverford College (Pa.). The team will be coached by Villanova’s Jay Wright.
