Picked up my paper today...and promptly threw it into the trash!!!
May 14, 2008 | 9:55PM | report this

I love reading the newspaper. I get a lot of things out of it. I get "current events" information out of it for my students. I get to read what is going on in the world around me. I read it and am then able to make my own, hopefully, somewhat informed opinions on what I read. I use a lot of it in school and some of it I just like to mull over in my head and use it to make conversation. My favorite section is, not surprisingly, the Sports section. Well...lets just say it has been my favorite section...until now. After reading the news in today's sports page I promptly threw the entire paper into the trash.

In the last month I have had to endure news about Roger Clemens' apparent current...and not so current...affairs. This is why we in education need to use "current events" instead of "current affairs" because...well...the meaning is often not in line with what is appropriate for school. So Clemens is not the saintly vision of the good husband. Oh, well. Sorry, Debbie that your husband, apparently, hasn't been faithful to you. Equally sorry that this information has been shared with the entire world through a media gone mad. Sorry that your husband put himself in a situation that your family could be put up in ridicule by some merciless #### attorney who needs this information to defend his equally #### client in a defamation suit brought about by your husband...who...at this point in time...may or may not have used PED's and HGH during his playing career but who, apparently, is a bit of a #### himself. Actually...I need to correct myself. I'm not really sorry about all of that. More than sorry...I'm a bit po'd that some newspaper man/woman deemed all of this newsworthy and proceeded to beat us to death with it. In my Sports page...my favorite section of my local paper.

I got to hear about how a future NBA superstar (cough, cough) made no qualms about his intent to play in the NBA in as quick a time as he could and was dealing with an agent...while playing B-Ball at USC. Excuse me...my fault...while he was in high school. I got to read how a friend spurned by the agent got so po'd that he started singing to officials louder than the lead singer of a rock band (insert your choice) screaming the lyrics to a song to be faintly heard over the lead guitarist screeching lingering cords that attempt to make the hearing impaired able to hear the faintest whisper. OJ Mayo did what has been done before by a large number of athletes. And the blame is falling everywhere. The agent, the institution, the coach, the player, the NBA's age policy, the friend. etc., etc., etc. They took up space in my favorite section of my local paper...the Sports section...to rail me with all of the sickening accusations and rambling finger pointing that I do so detest. Sadly, they will keep beating me into the ground with it and, yet, they will never offer a remedy to the problem. Just more rambling and finger-pointing.

I got to read how bloggers are evil and are ruining sports. This made me burp up my breakfast because it sounded more to me like a paranoid sportswriter worried about his job than it did anything that made much sense. I don't really think bloggers carry all that much power out there in the "real" world. I think we do a lot of responding to what these simple minded morons write than we do posting things that make any kind of a difference. Personally, I don't think anything that I post here is anything of great value to the world as a whole and I think that holds true for most people that blog...here...and maybe at other places. Maybe I'm being a bit naive but I just don't think we hold the great power some sportswriters seem to think we do. I wish we did because then we might be able to do something about all of the aforementioned rambling and finger-pointing...and wasting space in my Sports page...the favorite part of my local paper with accounts of player's mis-deeds based on reports from "anonymous sources."

I picked up the paper and read about another NFL player breaking some kind of law. I get to read about Marvin Harrison and his gun that was used to SHOOT someone but we don't know who shot it or how...I guess...it ended up back in Marvin's hands after he reported it stolen. In my Sports page I read about former Viking Darrion Scott assaulting his 2 year old son with a plastic laundry bag. The police on some lake in Austin, TX are apparently a bit overzealous in discharging their duties when it comes to boat safety and black NFL players...or maybe it is just Cedric Benson. Or...maybe Benson is the one who has problems when confronted by authority figures. Who knows? Had to wait three days to hear from one of the 15 people on-board Benson's boat to tell us she had to call her dad...on her cell phone...to have him call 911 (the police)...because a "black" friend of hers was getting beat up by police...presumably from the same force that would send out new police once dad got ahold of them. Ryan Perriloux (and if I spelled it wrong...I don't care) has the world at his hands and throws it all away because he can't follow a few simple rules...like stay out of the way of law enforcement officers...go to class...quit smoking dope...follow team rules, etc., etc., etc. As has been posted here on a few occassions the Cincinnati Bengals off-season is generally spent dealing with police blotters and rostered players. Pick almost any college football program and you are sure to see that the Compliance Department of the school has to not only comply with the NCAA...but with the local law enforcement agencies as well. I get to hear about all of this in my Sports page...the favorite part of my local paper.

Today I picked up my paper to see that Barry Bonds had been charged on 14 felony accounts...only to see it changed to 15 later in the day. This was in a headline...in the Sports section...the favorite part of my local paper. I read it because I thought 14 felony charges was a lot. But after reading the article I came to the conclusion that...as has been a lot of the problem with this story from the beginning...there is a bit of grandstanding going on...by the government and by the media. Seems Bonds hasn't been charged with anything he wasn't already charged with. It is just that the judge at Bonds' last hearing ordered the prosecution to re-write the charges. In doing that they were to write them more clearly. Apparently the government can be very clear with more charges. So...instead of the original 4 charges...they threw it up to 14...oops...my fault...now 15 charges. And what happened? Media outlets everywhere jumped all over the new charges. Bloggers went crazy with the news. And it started for me when I picked up my paper. People...!!! Of course they increased the number of charges. This is standard procedure...at least from my limited experience with the judicial system. Prosecutors throw a whole slew of charges against the accused because they need to have something to lose in the negotiation with the defense in pre-trial negotiations. If they go after Bonds on 4 measley charges and lose they have all of that egg on their face and the argument for having the government stay out of stuff like this picks up steam. With 15 charges they have some negotiating power. Now when they whittle it down the original 4 charges may stick around and they will still have to hope that Bonds admits to doing something wrong. But I got the gyst of this story in my Sports section...the favorite part of my local paper.

My local paper has a section titled, "News of the Weird" that reports strange goings on around the world. I suggested that they include all of the mis-doings (new word?) of any and all people associated with the sports world. They said they didn't have enough space to write it all in that section on a daily basis. Well...no real surprise there...is there? But now that I have ranted a bit would you like to know why I really threw my paper away today?

It is because with all of the #### (BLEEP) I have to read in my sports section on a daily basis I search hard for anything good. Generally reading about sports personalities that aren't problematic away from their chosen arena of competition are considered a good thing...in my Sports page...the favorite section of my local paper. And today two of those "good things" retired. Annika Sorenstam has been as strong a competitor as the LPGA has ever seen...and there are a lot of great women golfers past and present. OK...more so past than present...but the point is made. She is retiring after this season. Justine Henin...is also hanging it up. She no longer has the desire to compete at the level she has played at for so long. While she is not my favorite female professional tennis player I have always admired the tenacity with which she attacked her opponent. This is the stuff that sport is about. The things these two accomplished on their respective fields of endeavor are what sports are to me and these are the things I want to see in my Sports page...the favorite part of my local paper. The Sports page...the favorite part of my local paper...often gives recognition to high school athletes in a ####-hum, half a page, we need to say something about them, sort of way. While bombarding me with criminal activities and cheating athletes and all of those horrible coaches who are to blame for all of the criminal behavior of their rostered players.

This kind of stuff belongs in the entertainment section or the regular news section. This isn't about sports coverage anymore. It is in the sports section because these buffoons make their living playing sports. But these aren't sports stories. They are ridiculous fodder for the scandal pages. Sportswriters need to write about people who deserve the ink and give credit where credit is due. Stop inundating us with the latest misdeeds of Mr. NFL Dipstick or MLB Bozo and the great pitcher who has problems with infidelity or PED's or the extremely talented player who can't stay out of fights at strip clubs. Go beyond the obvious...do a little digging...and write a decent sports story. About something decent...and sports/newsworthy. Or...get the hell out of the way and let us bloggers have a whack at it. We probably couldn't be any worse...even with all of the so called hatred between bloggers that is out there. But that is for a different post...maybe! Give me back my Sports page...and make it my favorite part of the local paper...again.

And if they won't...like I said earlier today on a comment to Lisa...a lonely cabin on a remote mountain somewhere is starting to sound really good to me.

And that's the bottom line...

BOOMER SOONER!!!

I can't stand it anymore. They bleep out s-c-u-m-b-a-g and c-r-a-p now but we still have to read about all of the indiscretions of these people without, as George Carlin would say, "callin' 'em as I see 'em." What a tangled web we have woven.

I know how you feel. I bet you even Cameragate was also on there wasn't it?
I know you don't reading this stuff but let me tell you a few things that were updated that you probably don't know about.
Clemens: A former friend of McCready, just to let you hated Clemens from Day 1, stepped forward saying that McCready met Clemens when she was 17. She was there when they first met. At that time since they were close friends, she didn't believe that those two had sexual relations since McCready used to tell her everything. About the fact why McCready isn't denying anything, she was like me say of course she wouldn't deny it. Bad Publicity is better than no publicity. She said she brought this up because she thought it was right thing to do.

OJ Mayo: Nothing new. I have always blamed this stuff with basketball due to the stupid age 19 rule by the NBA.

Blogging: Jason Whitlock admitted also he didn't like it but he said it was here to stay. Wasn't really threatened by it if you actually read his article.

NFL: Marvin Harrison. Did he report the gun stolen before? If that's true that helps him a lot. May help hacks and pundits get off his back. Don't care about Darrion Scott.
Now Cedric Benson. He is telling the truth from what I read. Actually a new witness stepped forward. One who wasn't on the ship. He was saying how when they got off the boat when they took him away he said he can walk by himself but then they take out his legs then carry him. I think he sees that tazing and him screaming about I don't remember.

But the fact that people inside and outside of the ship are witnesses help him out.

Barry Bonds: Gotta love the prosecutors. Throwing excessive amount of charges hoping to win a few.

The FACT is that OJ Mayo has been taking money since early high school or maybe in middle school. It's not quite clear yet at what age he became a career criminal. His criminality has nothing to do with the NBA 19 year old rule. OJ Mayo is the next Isiah Rider.

You want that kind of garbage in the NBA do you debashi? So we can have more "sports news" for the next 5-10 years that is not sports? Stuff it.

I'm with you Gcoach. Put that #### on the entertainment page. Better yet put in in the crime section. That's where criminals belong so the other young budding criminals can have their own section and leave the Sports to the good guys doing the right thing. I'd like to read some sports.

The unfettered world of hype, both good (for some) and bad (for everyone else) has come home to roost...

You have to wade through all the negativity to find a decent newspaper article to read. Is it any wonder we're sliding into cynicism?

Now we see politicians acting self-righteous?

What in the name of sanity is next?

I feel your bleeping pain, gcoach...

I don't know what to say Nique. I can see why certain people think that you are nuts. Comparing Isiah Rider to OJ Mayo? How in the hell did that come up? Can you explain to me how they compare? Taking money from someone who is giving it to you willingly is criminal activity? You want to know how to stop "sports news" from being reported. Easily. Don't report it. That all. I don't need to know about Matt Leinart getting wasted, Clemens being a player and all that. They can just not report it.

Great post gcoach. As I was reading this I felt as if I was reading my own thoughts; or talking to myself.

The problem for me is, that I have actually found myself commenting on some of this stuff on the blogs lately. This, after being very successful for a long time in not getting sucked into the non-sports discussions.

dehbashi - In all actuality I couldn't care less about Mindy McCready or her pursuit of PR...good or bad. I have no doubt what so ever that she doesn't do anything but encourage this stuff for PR. I don't want to read it in my Spots section. OJ Mayo is OJ Mayo and has done nothing different than many before him...except he is a bit more pronounced in it. I'm not sure about Nique's claims about his criminal behavior in his life so I don't comment on that. He used and abused the system...whih is obviously made to be abused. If a sportswriter comments about the power of bloggers in any way, shape, or form...it leads me to think they are a bit insecure in how they are doing their job. Whether it is Whitlock or the other people involved in this story. The point to my rant is that this stuff isn't sports news and doesn't deserve to be in my Sports page beside high school athletes whohaven't done anything other than compete for their school. I have to get back to you. Sorry!

I know was just bored at the time and told you about that but yeah. This is what I want to read in Sports sections. 1) Scores 2) Analysis of Games 3) Transactions (trades, etc.) That's it. Rest is irrelevant.

gcoach, How long before this garbage that fills our beloved sports sections completely takes over the entire section? I was telling my wife (as if she even cared a little) about this same thing. I appreciate the writers that go out to high school track meets, interview coaches and participants, and write. There are hundreds of baseball games going on in the high school ranks. There is plenty of stories out there, but what gets the headlines is what is on the national wire.

All of this Associated Press c-ra-p-ola is for the birds. You are absolutely correct in saying that this garbage belongs in the entertainment section or People magazine. Clemens is now a celebrity who happend to pitch very well.

Thanks for getting me all fired up for the day. You are good at doing that to me.

One more thing. I just found out my blog is named "The Village BLEEP" Really? I-d-i-o-t gets the BLEEP? I love this site, but sometimes I have to shake my head in disbelief. I had to take the filter off my settings because I can't understand what I am reading half the time even without 4-5 words in a sentence getting bleeped.

Great subject coach. I've been wondering, where are the positive stories. I know for a fact they are out there, I guess it's just more fun to sling mud. There is a man coming back to my hometown who is a great example for us all. I am refering to Warrick Dunn, an athelete, that where ever he goes, has a positive and inspiring impact on that area. Assisting single mothers purchase homes that they and their children can call their own is truly an inspiring act of compassion.I hope on day there will be just as many stories of hope than there is of greed, but until then I guess I'll just dream on

In regard to a statement you made about the article reported about Marvin Harrison,in what article did you read that "he reported the gun stolen" I have tried to stay up to date on this but don't recall any article that he said or told anyone his gun was stolen I have read where alot of these lime light reporters have made that statement but never a quote from him.

As long as we treat atheletes like they are special and above the law, they will continue to act accordingly. From high school to college and into the pros, they are given advantages and cut breaks non-stop until they actually start to BELIEVE they deserve special treatment. They don't need to receive a proper education or learn how to be a productive member of society as long as that dough keeps rolling in.

We shouldn't treat sports stars as heroes for what they do on the field. They should be applauded for what they do OFF the field. The ones who stay out of trouble and give back to the community are the ones we should be celebrating.

On the bright side, we are starting to see "character" becoming more important to the process of building a team. Nowadays, character issues can drop someone's draft position or make them less likely to be signed. There are still teams that haven't seemed to learn the risk of taking problem players (ahem, Bengals), and in the end it's all about the money the player can make for the team, but it is becoming more of a factor.

dehbashi - The Benson thing is too stupid to get involved in...especially in the Sports page. I will say that I may be a bit apprehensive over anything I see reported and attributed to anyone ON the boat. I would presume they are friends of his and unless he has friends like...OJ Mayo...then how trustworthy are they? Again...move it to another section of the paper. It isn't sports news. Thanks for dropping by.

Nique - thanks for sharing your view point.

Dwindy1 - apparently there is no sanity in this anymore. As to politicians...Arlen Spector needs a colonoscopy to get rid of all of the #### (bleep it again) he has begun to spew forth. He spent all these years getting nowhere in the News section of the paper and...needing attention...has moved to the one section where he can get it...while saying virtually nothing of importance. If I had any hair I'd probably pull some of it out. Guess I'm glad I don't, then! Thanks for the comments. Always welcome here.

bosox61 - I read your post about visiting old friends and rehashing a youthful experience. Great job. Sportswriters seem to have moved past quality sports reporting because they think this stuff is really news. They mask the lack of real sport content simply because the ones they write about play sports for a living. There is a disconnect that has happened along the way. Sadly, I think we are seeing it everywhere. I just want sports in my sports page. Glad you stopped by.

oldskewler - anything I can do to get the blood pumping, you know. I appreciate it when you stop by. They could go a long way to giving me my sports page back if they didn't treat high school sports like it is a necessary evil. There are days here when I can't even find high school sports coverage. What a farce. As to the censorship thing...way out of control. They even bleeped out the H-O in ####-hum. Unbelievable.

aero - thanks for visiting. Sounds like Dunn is one of the good ones. Don't hear enough about them, do we?

U-fan4ever - I have never seen it quoted by him but have read it reported by the infamous "anonymous source" whoever that may be. Didn't mean to confuse anyone on that point.

Bolts - you make some good points. Along with what you said though the print media and other forms of media have to be able to see things from that perspective as well. Otherwise it will never be set straight. And I'll never get my Sports section back...the way it should be...about real sports stuff. Thanks for commenting.

Rev - What's up? Football season is never close enough...until they actually kick off. But you are correct...it is coming so I should cheer up. All I can say to that is...Let's Play Some Freakin' Football! Gators look good? Sooners went through Spring ball without a lot of their starters and still managed to present some talent on the field. If everyone heals up...I could be a happy guy come September...or looking way ahead...January. But, you know me, I don't like getting that far ahead. Thanks for coming by.

The more things tend to change the more they do tend to stay the same. Sports now and has always been nothing more than another leg of the entertainment industry.
To my mind any problems that it brings upon itself then it ought to deal with itself.

My concerns are far greater than that at the moment. My buddies who are out there fightin' in the Middle East for one. And now another who's choosing to leave his medical practice for 6 months to go and volunteer in Myanmar (Burma). And try as I might to talk him out of it he just won't listen. I can understand his passion to wanting to help. But considering the risks and the regime's mistrust and dislike of foreigners. I'd rather see him remain here and deal with the citizens here in the US. Just my thoughts however.

Take care coach .....peace !

Has anyone noticed the several articles on the Fox Sports webpage about FORMER NFL players getting arrested lately? I honestly think there's a segment of sports fans out there who love this stuff, and I can't think of any other reason why it should be reported on so heavily. Every time a Cincinnatti Bengal gets a traffic ticket I have to read headlines about it, and there are always fifty or so sanctimonious fools appointing themselves judge, jury, and executioner via message boards.

I commend the guys that are out there doing their duty. I know what it's like having been through the thick and thin of that stuff. Whilst in the British military I was stationed in N Ireland during the troubles there and lost several friends at the hands of the IRA. And prior to that I'd been stationed in N Africa as part of UN contingency. Either time it wasn't particualarly pleasant to say the least.

As it is now I just come to expect the unexpected when it comes to the revelries of sports. You can't really expect any more or any less at this juncture !
So I'll just take it as I can get it as of now.

I'll be watching the ol' Preakness Stakes to see if Big Brown can earn me a little extra cheddar as we Brits like to say.

Definitely the Benson incident shouldn't have been on the sports section. This should be part of the "crime" section. Quotations because with the evidence I'm seeing the cops were overreacting. Let me find the link that says that a person who wasn't on a boat but just a bystander who saw him get pulled off the boat supported his claim. I think I didn't make myself clear.

Gee Coach,

This is one classic write. Your disenchantment is well placed.

At THE LEAGUE (http://www.thel.tv), I (we) don't do the type and kind of stories you describe here. Never have -- ever since my days here at Fox Blogs.

Folks talk about how negativity sells, but that's a cop-out. At THE LEAGUE we do nothing but promote sports (including the negative) in a positive, relevant, immediate manner. And we are growing by leaps and bounds each and every day as a result of our approach. In fact, we now count professional athletes among our core audience.

Thanks for putting these issues in proper perspective, bro. I applaud your courage to take on the status quo over issues that are near and dear to all of us as sports fans.

Again, heck of a job!

Now go have yourself a beer, on me.

Here's the money:

Apparently I kind of hit the mother lode with this post. I got a response from ShooterB and MeanDovine. No offense to all others but this made my day.

Mean - I have seen what you and Ricko do over there and I must tell you I am extremely impressed. I read many of the postings but am not literate enough in the NBA to comment with any kind of actual intelligence. I just don't follow it closely. However, I agree with the content that you post on. I haven't seen any of the "cheap entertainment" stuff that is getting so common place today. I wish you guys the best with what you are doing there. Maybe I'll just drop in and say hello every once in a while. One of the reasons having you and ShooterB comment on my post is a big deal to me is because you don't write to the mess but you keep it real. That has always meant something to me. Stop into Gcoach's world anytime you feel like it. I greatly appreciate your input. And thanks for the cash for the beer. Always lookin' out for me. Has to be an O'Doul's, though. Me and alcohol don't mix.

It certainly has been a while. Nice to see that you are still capable of laying down a solid rant.

Catch you around...and thank YOU for keeping it real.

Don't worry, coach, we have and will continue to cover the entire spectrum of sports. But we must expand in such a way as to protect the integrity of THE LEAGUE'S mandate and mission.

To date, we've covered the PGA, MLB, NBA, and NASCAR ...

We will be expanding the site and our reach with the next release, sometime after the NBA playoffs end, so look for coverage of the NHL and NFL, etc., in the near future. And we won't bombard you with ads either, even though we have corporate sponsors.

Thanks for dropping in on us from time to time.

We'll continue to visit you as well.

Goodnite, bro.

Again, great job!

Coach, I feel your pain, but one thing you say in your bio is totally contradictory. The reason why athletes are held in higher regard is because they ARE BETTER than you...at something...just like when we are adults, we finally realize that the smart people like Bill Gates and all of the nerds are at least some people we should hold in high regard, but so many of your hated professional atheletes give much money, and have many foundations that help thousands of people. For you as a coach and educator to lump all together is almost as sad as the things you say in your article. I personally try to ignore and downplay the nonsense, and up lift the games themselves and the competition. They are all games we play as kids, and only a few a LUCKY, SPECIAL and so GIFTED people are fortunate enough to play as adults and shine for only a few short brief moments in their lives. Maybe i will write a post in retort!

deuce - read bio again...notice I hold MOST professional athletes in low regard and MOST of them are prima donnas who WERE FORTUNATE enough to get where others didn't. So I did NOT lump them all together. MOST is NOT ALL! People like Terrell Owens, Randy Moss and Duante Culpepper act like they are owed something when they ARE NOT! And these are just a few of the many. And Moss is actually getting better. Granted there are some who still understand what humility is and can keep their success in context. You have no idea what kind of athlete I have been in my life because you don't know me. I had every chance to get where some of these guys are and was stopped by one thing...injuries. My knees have been sliced 10 times. You don't know jack about me yet you have chosen to attack me through my bio...without quoting what is there accurately. Write whatever you want...but when you read something...read what is written. And it is amazing to me that some people don't get the point of the post. Seems fairly simple to me. Perhaps you should get Bill Gates to read it to you. And if you wish to write something about a professional athlete who gives back to the community...go right ahead. It will be a welcome relief from what I see in my paper everyday.

I'm just watching the Spurs resurrect their postseason hopes against the Lakers. Finally they're showing some real signs of life here in these conference finals.

In the UK we've got a tabloid paper by the name of The Sun . It's a paper that's owned by News Corp Int'l and part of Murdoch's vast media empire. On page 3 there are some rather hot females that pose topless. Suffice to say that these females left very little to one's imagination when it came to their poses.

Former page three model ,Samantha Fox, of the UK edition of The Sun newspaper.
Suffice to say females like this adorned page three of the paper six days of the week.

The pity is that there isn't a US edition of the paper.

I hate this. I'm always looking for stories that have to do with the game of football, but instead it is littered with dog murder, strip club shootings, hit and runs, TB baby momma drama, Chris Henry's 1000th arrest, Cedric Benson's multiple DUI's, the neverending story that is spygate, ect. I can see how it's the bloggers faults since these news stories are chosen based on traffic, and those above stories generate 1000's of comments vs. regular stories which barely get 20.

ABOUT ME

gcoach
I am an educator and a coach. I was a goaltender in hockey until my playing days finished but now coach hockey and soccer. Once a goaltender always a goaltender. I am an Oklahoma Sooners fan, hold most professional athletes in low regard and have no time for prima donna athletes who think they are better than others who were not fortunate enough to get where these guys, or girls, are. I don't think celebrity puts anyone higher than anyone else in any capacity which, I think, is contrary to our society perception.
