I missed the Hogfan College Football poll last week so I'm gettin' in early this week. Rip me if you will, that is fine...admittedly I am not an "expert." So if you are looking for an "experts" offerings...go find Jay Mohr or one of the other FOXSports guys with contracts and payments in hand. I ain't one of 'em. Some of my picks may leave you wondering, snickering, or wondering where I come up with one or more of these teams in a Top 25 poll. But I'm fairly certain that you won't lookat this the way you looked at Demon's last week when Hogfan posted it. At least I don't think you will. But even if you do...I'm more than alright with that because...again...I ain't no "expert." Now that the ramble is out of the way...on to the poll.
AFTER TWO GAMES (for most of the teams)
1 - LSU - I commented early in my first poll that I knew they would be good on D but thought they would miss Jamarcus Russell too much. OK - I was wrong on that point. They miss Russell less than the Raiders do. This is a fantastic football team and after 2 games should be ranked at the top spot.
2 - USC - Virtually everyone has, or had, them at number one to start the year. They have played 1 game. Did they struggle against Idaho? Probably from an expectation standpoint but they still ran away with the game.
3 - Oklahoma - I am torn here for obvious reasons. While I think the Sooners are one of the best three teams in the country I would love to see them continue to hammer their opponents. I wouldn't have a problem with moving this team in front of USC at this point in time...but I won't be greedy. I'd rather see them there at the end of the season heading into the National Championship game than see them there now.
4 - Penn State - Papa Joe has a solid team this year after the first two games. They are dominating their opponents.
5 - West Virginia - this team plays great offense but the defense...Not sold on it.
6 - Florida - So far, so good for Tebow and the young D. It's going to get interesting very soon.
7 - Texas - They have struggled for 7 quarters and just exploded in the last one for 24 points against a decent TCU team. McCoy is still the key on offense.
8 - Wisconsin - They are 2-0 but needed a late score to beat UNLV last week. That and I tried to make conversation with a Badger fan on Sunday and he could have been the biggest P - - - K I've ever attempted to talk to.
9 - Louisville - See if you can tell me where you heard this before. Play great offense but the defense...Not sold on it.
10 - UCLA - Just moving along quietly beating teams (OK, so it is only 2-0).
11 - Rutgers - Rice looks very, very good.
12 - Georgia Tech - All of those returning starters are looking good.
13 - California - Kind of the same thing as UCLA, although Tennessee was their first victim.
14 - Hawaii - Colt Brennan is clearly a stud...but OT against Louisiana Tech?
15 - Ohio State - Not very impressive in 2 games...unless you talk defense.
16 - Nebraska - Were they looking ahead to USC that made Wake Forest such a problem? Keller needs to stop with the int's.
17 - Oregon - They are cruising. I don't think Michigan is completely horrible...and if they are...the Ducks pounded them like a good team should (isn't that a song title?)
18 - Texas A & M - Jorvorske Lane...big offense...little defense...12th man. Whatever?
19 - Virginia Tech - Just don't think they are as good as advertised or as good as the emotional ties are. They struggled in their first game and LSU made them look silly last week.
20 - South Carolina - stand at 2-0 and a great win over Georgia. How about that, Demon? You were right.
21 - Clemson - 2-0 but 26 against by Louisiana - Monroe. Sorry and I'm not trying to be mean here...but who is Louisiana Monroe?
22 - Boston College - AP and Coaches have them here...they must know what they are doing. Wait, aren't they "experts?" So they beat Wake Forest by 10 and pasted NCState. I've a feeling this week Georgia Tech may not be so accomodating.
23 - Georgia - this could be a tough team to figure out. They play really well against Oklahoma State in shutting down the "Greatest Offense in College Football" and putting up 35 against them and then they had more than they could handle...at least for one night against South Carolina.
24 - Washington - Hammered Syracuse and beat BOISE STATE. It's all good to me. I think they may be able to handle Ohio State this week, especially, if the Buckeye offense doesn't wake up.
25 - South Florida - Any team that beats Tommy Tuberville and Auburn gets a nod from me. It's just a Tommy thing...he annoys me....just as I'm pretty sure I would annoy him...at every opportunity.
Well...there it is...like it or not. I'm not an "expert" but sometimes it feels good to pretend. Hogfan, again my apologies for missing out last week. Ya'll have a good week!!!
Don't know how the coaches (USA) have OU at #5. They are going to steamroll Utah State and then Tulsa & Colorado (both on road).
This is a very favorable schedule for the Sooners because travel so little. Three times to Texas once to Iowa (Iowa State) and Colorado.
I really think they're 12-0 into the Big XII title game against Nebraska. West Virginia's not going undefeated with their defense so it could be a title game against LSU, if not them then USC.
LSU - after two games they are beating their opponents like they should so why not? I really like the way your boys are playing right now. They look really good on both sides of the ball. Thanks for dropping by.
degraff - Maybe and maybe not. But they beat Boise State who is still a pretty decent team regardless of the arguments against. They may not stick if Ohio State handles them easily. Thanks!
Nos - Yea they are probably too high here but they can score on anyone. Obviously keeping ohers off the board is a bit of a concern. They could drop quickly if they keep struggling on D. With their schedule, although some of their argument is legit, it will be hard for them to get higher than this. Thanks for the comments. Always apprecite your visits.
Norcal - if they keep playing with intensity on both sides of the ball I think they will be fine. And on top of everything else they are very young. I'm a happy guy right now but it is a long season. Thanks for stopping in.
bgL - if they beat Louisville, and I think they can, I'll ease your pain next time around because I think they are knocking at the door with that QB they have. Missed you as well...was gettin' worried...glad to see you are back and can't wait until HSSS.
I am an educator and a coach. I was a goaltender in hockey until my playing days finished but now coach hockey and soccer. Once a goaltender always a goaltender. I am an Oklahoma Sooners fan, hold most professional athletes in low regard and have no time for prima donna athletes who think they are better than others who were not fortunate enough to get where these guys, or girls, are. I don't think celebrity puts anyone higher than anyone else in any capacity which, I think, is contrary to our society perception.
