There have been quite few comments lately on Bonds and the media. These comments have mentioned that media coverage is over the top. There have been comments about how the media spins things regarding Bonds to get the reader or listener to their product. This is what the media does. After reading a few of these I was scouring the Foxsports home page and ran into something that spurred my interest.
On the home page, at the very lower right part of the page there is a section titled, "Hot topic of the Day."
This is an interactive poll regarding input to the following question:
What will be your reaction when Bonds hits No. 714?
The answer options are:
I'll celebrate a historic event.
I'll watch it, but won't care much.
I'll watch it, but only to boo Bonds.
I'm avoiding it at all costs.
To me, this is an example of the media and their spin. With the exception of the first one, none of the answers have a positive spin on them. That said, most people don't recognize it as a historic event because they either dislike Bonds, think Ruth will always be the number two, oops, number one, well wait a minute...at any rate it is not really a historic event, not like going to number one would be. And "won't care much", "only to boo Bonds", and "avoid it at all costs" are all pretty negative. Therefore, Bonds passing Ruth for second place on the all time homerun list is a negative thing.
If they were even going to consider being fair, maybe the second answer could have been something like, "I'll watch it and enjoy the moment."
But, then again, why should we expect fair in this?
Don't look for some mystical reason for the attention. Bonds is considered by the vast majority of baseball fans as a cheater of monumental proportion. The vitriol has to be released in some way and the media knows it.
After he passes Ruth, he'll play another 2 or 3 months then his body will give out. I don't see him completing the year.
Go to the settings page of your blog, its at the top, and then you can change your avatar. You may need to download a pic to your pc first, then upload it to fox. It's not that hard.
As for Bonds, I believe he will play for one more year and break Aaron's record. All the naysayers think his body will give in, but he is getting stronger as the year progresses, and only playing half the games will keep him in shape to play. He may go to the AL and play DH for a year. That is what I truly think will happen.
Socal - I agree. His agent was quoted in the paper this morning saying Bonds would play in 2007 and that the AL was a definate possibility. He also said something to the effect that 1000 HR's would be in the picture if all he had to do was hit. To that I would say no but the all time record - yes.
Selig's hatchet man Mitchell will bury Bonds if he tries to come back in 2007.
Plain and simple Selig can see the writing on the wall even if Bonds can't or won't.
Passing Ruth is a teacup compared to the ocean of grief passing Aaron will cause.
This is Bonds last hurrah one way or another.
Besides who needs a DH hitting .240 and 2 and 1/2 HR's a month?
Isn't his name Endy Chavez?
Ed - Selig and Mitchell. Now there are a couple of fine and outstanding citizens. Hypocrites of the first order. You may be right. Selig wants all of this to go away so that he may never be called on the carpet for knowing about the steroid abuse and doing nothing about it because all the homeruns hit after 94' were great for the game. Oh, wait a minute, he blamed the MLBPA for the problem. Hey, Bud. Talk about making your bed and not wanting to lay in it.
I just wrote my article on the cab driver. This is another bad mistake by Nifong.
You ask did he forget about the warrant, but why did the police suddenly remember the warrant. You mean in 3 years they forgot to arrest this guy. Come on, this is intimidation to coerce the testimony out of him they want. And of course he can remember, he is a cab driver. Cabbies have excellent memories. Studies have shown how well taxi drivers excel at facts. London cab drivers know every street and every traffic detail and have an uncanny ability to remember. Anyway, this just gets me angry, especially if any of these guys are guilty, because they will walk.

Socal - I'll read your article. I was just stirring it up a bit. This is all part of the travesty that this case is for either side. I see your point about forgetting the warrant for three years. While cab drivers have great memories and one woould assume sense of direction, people also have a tendency to move when in trouble, not report their whereabouts and assume aliases. Do I know if any of this happened? No. Would I be surprised if any of this happened? No. Does anything that either side does at this point surprise me in this case? No.
Yeah its like a hate-off is Bonds as repulsive as Selig? It wasn't just Bonds it was Selig pulling the "see no evil" routine while this happened. His feet dragging certainly indicates he's hoping Bonds evaporates but Barry's ego reads that as I'll go DH.
Ed - the longer Bonds plays the more of a headache Selig gets. With the DH in the AL I can see Bonds playing as long as it takes to pass Aaron and that is not what Selig wants. He will eventually have to face the music if Bonds gets to Aaron. I hope Bonds gets there to see what Selig will do.
Gutless Wonder, I mean Selig, wins by TKO.
He had a very publicized meeting with Bonds in April of 2004 in order to determine MLB's official policy on records being broken by steroid users where Bonds was told to come clean or suffer severe consequences. Bonds told him flat out he never used steroids.
Consequently Selig can pull the trigger on Bonds for the lie and not even bruise or trigger MLB's toothless steroid policy.
Once Selig puts Bonds into the phantom zone like Rose & Shoeless Joe he's g-g-g-gone.
That's how I see it.
Selig gets no applause.

So Selig ends up with a whole lot of egg on his face. One for not doing anything about it when he should have and then for acing Bonds out of baseball in an effort to keep his nose clean and Hank Aaron on top. And that is no offense to Aaron by the way. If you have some time read another post I wrote about Selig here. It is a little long but when I researched it I rememberd some things I had forgotten about Mr. Conflict of Interest.
I am an educator and a coach. I was a goaltender in hockey until my playing days finished but now coach hockey and soccer. Once a goaltender always a goaltender. I am an Oklahoma Sooners fan, hold most professional athletes in low regard and have no time for prima donna athletes who think they are better than others who were not fortunate enough to get where these guys, or girls, are. I don't think celebrity puts anyone higher than anyone else in any capacity which, I think, is contrary to our society perception.
