New Orleans Saints RB Reggie Bush hasn't exactly lit the league on fire his first two season in the NFL. In fact I'm sure he's found it much harder running past every member of the opposing defense than he did in college. However because of this is he a bust? If you ask this Saints fan would I have still taken Bush over Mario Williams in the 2006 NFL Draft I'd say yes.
For all intents and purposes Bush is a very important part of what the Saints are able to do with it's high powered offense. In his rookie season he showed just how dangerous he is when he's given space and open field to work with. He may not be a between the tackles runner but how many people can honestly say that coming out of college they thought he would be? As the saying goes though, success breeds contempt. With all the success Reggie had while a member of the USC Trojans he was an easy target to hate on.
Reggie is going into his third season as a member of the Saints organization. It's easy to say that we'll see much more of the same from him. Unwilling to try and run between tackles for the tough yards and always looking to turn the corner. We could say a multitude of things but the one thing we all seem to refuse to say or forget is he's still young and learning.
I remember a QB by the name of Peyton Manning who was thought highly of coming out of college. I also remember that same young man make so many mistakes his first few seasons. However Manning has grown into a top flight QB in this league and possibly before his career is over one of the greatest of all time.
Now that's not to say Bush will be of the same caliber as a Barry Sanders or Emmitt Smith. It's saying give the man some time to develop more. I'm sure he's working hard every year to be the best he can be at his position. He's certainly tougher than anyone who is not a fan of his will give him credit for.
This off season Bush has rededicated himself to his team and being a better RB when called upon to do so. He decided to stay in New Orleans with the team and train rather than be in Cali with all the distraction that's sure to come with it. After all Reggie is a celebrity and well respected in Cali. Then there's his girlfriend Kim and God knows it's a task keeping up with that Kardashian.
All in all I expect to see a much improved Reggie Bush this 2008 season. One who'll know when to run between the tackles and when to go towards the outside and turn the corner. I also fully expect him to continue to be a vital part of the passing attack. Most of all I expect him to continue to grow and help the Saints find that same "mojo" that brought them all the way to the NFC championship game just two years ago.
The perfect breakfast as I see it.
