They say History has a way of repeating itself, well someone forgot to tell LSU that on their final drive which ended with QB Jarrett Lee finding WR Brandon Lafell for an 18 yd touchdown. Lee had a rough start when he came in during the second quarter. His first five passes were incompletions and another was ill advised which turned into an interception for an Auburn TD.
When starting QB Andrew Hatch was knocked silly on a QB run, Lee had to find it within himself to stay poised and do what was necessary for his team to win...he didn't fail. Lee would finish the game 11-21 for 182 2 TD's and an int.
RB Charles Scott continued to impress me with his powerful running. He wore down a very good Auburn defensive line as the game went on. Scotts had 132 yds on 21 carries with a long of 32 and avg. around 6.3 yds a carry.
Les "The Gambler" Miles caught Auburn off guard twice in the game. Once on a perfect onside kick after just scoring a TD and again with RB Keiland Williams throwing a halfback pass for A TD.
I have to give respect to the Auburn Tigers who wouldn't just go away easy. They scored the go ahead TD with just over 8 min. to play in the fourth. However LSU's defense played tough as they did all night and got the offense the ball back with not that much time to spare but it was enough for QB Lee to complete some huge passes and none bigger than the TD with just over a minute left.
I've seen some great games between these two teams but this was a classic SEC defensive battle as neither offense is that great with the exception of LSU's offensive line and RB Charles Scott. Scott just may be the best RB in the SEC and one of the top in the nation. His bruising style of runs went a long way in helping LSU pull off this victory.
Auburn players and fans should feel no shame as the team played tough throughout, it just wasn't to be. They'll definatley still be a team to be reckoned with for some years once offensive coordinator Tony Franklins and the team has time to figure out the whole spread offense.
Overall another great Saturday in CFB and I'm just happy that LSU was able to pull this one off. Hopefully next week against another tough defense from the SEC Miss.St., LSU will be able to get the passing game going. Until then I'll be sitting back and enjoying this win.
Are you an SEC homer? Do you just love SEC football and other sports? Tired of trying discuss topics about the SEC and having some obnoxious punk from another conference interfering, causing you to forget what you was even talking about because you had to start laying the smack down?
Well I have the place for you! I just created a private group here at foxsports that will allow you to able to discuss all things SEC. No more worries about some left coaster who thinks he knows your own conference better than you. You'll never have to explain yourself over and over again why the SEC is the most dominant and exciting football being played.
No more questions of why we chant SEC! SEC! SEC! whenever one of our teams has just gave some team from who cares what conference a good old fashioned Southern #### beating!
This is a private group so I will need to invite you. Sorry it's the only way to keep out the undesired. All you have to do is send me a foxmail letting me know you'd like to join. I'll then send you the necessary info you need.
I'm really excited about doing this so I hope a few of my SEC brethren here will join.
I want to also say to my friends here who root for teams from other conferences that I mean no disrespect towards you, your team or conference. It's just that sometimes more often than not I get tired of hearing ignorance about how we Southerners are #### and other such stupidity when we are talking football. Other peoples personal beliefs does not matter to me or have a place when discussing what we love...Sports!
Hope to see you there!
One final note this group will be unlike any other here. As our numbers grow they'll be events I'll be trying to set up for each of us to enjoy and any ideas are certainly welcomed. With that said there's just one more thing...
Now that LSU has finished playing it's warm up games, it's time to get serious when this Saturday they'll go head to head with Auburn. These two teams always go at it hard with the home team usually being the victor. However it might not be that way this season when looking at Auburn who has installed a new spread offense that they have yet to put all together. Facing what possibly is the best defensive line in the nation of the LSU Tigers, they'll need to be almost perfect.
The strength of this Auburn team is the same as it has been for years, their defense. Still I think they'll be out matched upfront by LSU's massive offensive line. They create huge holes for Jr. Tailback Charles Scott to run through. Scott isn't a speedster but has tremendous strength and great vision. Against both Appalachian st. and N.Texas he has shown the ability to bust long runs for huge gains.
Scott isn't the only RB that the Auburn Tigers need to worry about though. There are quite a few on this LSU team, namely Richard Murphy and Keiland Williams. Williams was projected to be the starter this season after losing Jacob Hester to graduation but Scott showed much improvement over the summer and has earned that position.
RB/WR Trindon Holliday is always a nightmare when he touches the ball. The fast little guy is hard to get arms on and has world-class speed. He's very valuable on the return team and if he gets by the first set of defenders...lookout!
The weakest points of this LSU team is inexperience at the QB position and it's young DB's. If Auburn can get pressure on Soph. QB Andrew Hatch or freshman Jarret Lee then that can spell doom for the Purple and Gold. Keep in mind though that Hatch can run and has done so a few times so far this season. In my opinion he might be better at running with the ball than Matt Flynn was.
The DB's are young but as I said the new offense that Auburn is trying to imploy hasn't quite caught on yet. It's a spread offense and after facing Appalachian st. and N.Texas LSU is ready and able to defend it quite well. Other than when Rich Rodriguez was at West Virginia my opinion is nobody runs a spread better than Appalachian st. of which the LSU Tigers found no problem with because of all around defensive speed.
This will by no means be an easy win but I do expect LSU to come out ahead. So far Auburn hasn't lived up to expectations as they were picked by the SEC coaches to win the West. Say what you want about LSU but they still seem to be the best team in the West with Alabama probably another year away from contending.
One thing to note is that Sr. LB Darry Beckwith will not play in this game due to injury he suffered Sat. against N. Texas. He controls the middle of the field and it will be interesting to see if Auburn can exploit that. Although I'm sure Miles will have whomever he plays there ready to do what is necessary to help the team win.
As always I apologize for posting in the NFL section. Until Fox fixes whatever the issue is with me not being able to post within the college football section, I'll have to continue posting there.
There is this pretty serious storm predicted to hit the coast of S.E. Louisiana by early Tuesday morning. His name is Gustav and he has New Orleanians and others in and around the area scrambling for higher ground. However that won't stop the LSU Tigers from hosting Appalachian state tomorrow in Baton Rouge. Nope not even a big bad Hurricane can stop Tiger football.
Officials have gotten together and moved the game start time but we'll be damned if we'll put on hold what Appalachian st. has coming to them. That I'm thankful for because I've spent all day trying to find a hotel in other states and everything is booked. So it looks as though I might have to sit at home and ride this one out. That's ok though, as long as I can get one LSU game in before the lights go out for about a week I'm happy. Are my priorities screwed up...you bet they are!
Since I'm going to be here why not just focus on the game to take my mind of the inevitable. I have one ice chest full of Heinekens and another waiting to put food and water. Nah forget the water I can load that with more beer! Oh by the way the game has been moved to 10:00 a.m central time. Which means I'll be starting my usual Saturday drinking escapade an hour early. I may invite some friends to stay with me but they are probably scared and ran already. Oh well I have my dog and he likes football and beer as well.
So my friends if I'm not heard from after Early Tuesday morning I've either drank myself into a coma waiting on the impending doom, or the electricity is out and in which I'll have nothing better to do but drink myself into a stupor. Either that or I'll be chilling in the back yard now that I'll have a swimming pool. Then again if I do that I might get swallowed up by some 11ft Gator, hmmm that might not be such a good idea after all.
Well in either case have a great weekend and enjoy the start of the first weekend of the greatest time of the year...college football!
New Orleans is a very unique city in America. We love to eat and drink probably more than what's healthy for us. It's home to two of the largest music festivals within the united states, Jazz fest and Essence fest of which the former just passed a few months ago and the later is this weekend. New Orleans is also home to what us locals call "Carnival" officially beginning on the Feast of epiphany, which locals sometimes refer to as "Twelfth Night". The Carnival season is often known (especially by out-of-towners) by the name of its last day, Mardi Gras (Frenchfor "Fat Tuesday"), which is held the Tuesday before the beginning of the Catholic liturgical season of Lent, which commences on Ash Wednesday.
One other thing we love and take much pride in is our sports teams. New Orleans is home to a wide variety of sporting events. Most notable are the home games of the New Orleans Saints(NFL) and the New Orleans Hornets (NBA), New Orleans Voodoo (AFL),The New Orleans Blaze are a women's football team in the National womans football association.
The annual Sugar Bowl, the annual Zurich classic (PGA Tour) and horse racing at the Fair grounds race course, the nations third oldest thoroughbred track. Also, New Orleans regularly hosts the Super Bowl, the college football BCS National Championship game, and the NCAA college basketball Final Four.
Special Football Games:
Sugar Bowl -- New Orleans has been home to the annual Sugar Bowl since 1935. Originally played at Tulane Stadium, it has been played in the Louisiana Superdome since 1975.
The Bayou Classic -- an annual football game between two historically black universities, Grambling State and Southern University.
Super Bowl -- More Super Bowls have been played at the Louisiana Superdome than at any other sports facility: 1978, 1981, 1986, 1990, 1997, and 2002.
BCS National Championship Game -- The Louisiana Superdome rotates with three other locations as the host for the BCS National Championship Game. The Superdome hosted the BCS National Championship Game in 2000, 2004, 2008, and will continue to do so in 2012, 2016, etc.
New Orleans Bowl -- New Orleans has been home to the annual New Orleans bowl since 2001.
ArenaBowl -- New Orleans played host to the AFL's Championship game in 2007 and 2008.
Special Basketball Games:
The Final Four -- the Superdome hosted the NCAA college basketball Final Four in 1982, 1987, 1993, and 2003.
NBA All Star Game -- The NBA All Star Game was hosted by New Orleans
Former Sports teams and events in New Orleans:
In 1991, 1992, and 1995, New Orleans was home to the Grand Prix du Mardi Gras. The sports car races took place on 2 different street circuits downtown. The circuit used in 1991 used streets near the riverfront, but was regarded as being too narrow. A course that ran around the Superdome was used the other years. Low attendance, dates that resulted in hot or rainy weather, and complaints from business owners contributed to the event's demise.
The New Orleans Halfmoons, a women's rugby team and member of USA Rugby, was disbanded after its members were scattered by Hurricane Katrina. The Halfmoons, one of the oldest women's teams in the United States, hosted the annual "Throw Me Something Rugger" tournament held the weekend before Fat Tuesday. Feb 2007, the Halfmoons returned to once again host the annual tournament.
The New Orleans Shell Shockers are a soccer team in the USL Premier Development League. Former soccer teams in New Orleans include the New Orleans Storm (1993-1999).
Former football teams in New Orleans include the New Orleans Breakers of the United States Football League (which became the Portland Breakers) and the New Orleans Night of the Arena Football League (1991–1992).
Former baseball teams in New Orleans include the New Orleans Pelicans (1887–1959; 1977)
Former ice hockey teams in New Orleans include the New Orleans Brass (1997–2003).
Some notable athletes from New Orleans are:

Coming from one of the smallest major cities in the U.S. that's pretty remarkable. Is New Orleans "King" of the sports world? That might depend on who you ask. Although we've been having a few down years since Hurricane Katrina, at times just like any state it can be a hot bed of talent.
It's a wonderful city, with some very wonderful citizens. I've been here for 34 great years and I'm proud to call it home.
Many Americans will be doing their annual family gathering to BBQ and all other sorts of activities this Memorial day. The one thing that to many Americans will not be doing is stopping for atleast a minute or two to honor those who died serving this country so that you and I may have the freedom afforded us.
To my heart that is saddening. My Father served this country in the Marine Corps during the Vietnam war. I've heard the countless horror stories of what war is like. I feel very blessed and fourtunate that my father was able to return home from such a horrible circumstance. Though he wasn't well recieved from the masses when he did. I know in my heart that what he and those that he served with all had one purpose. That is America though not perfect is the greatest country for any one individual and even more a family can live. Live with the most freedom one can have because they lost limbs and even their lives to be sure that it remained that way.
So please all my friends here if for even one minute stop and give thanks and prayers to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for all us Americans. Freedom isn't free at all.
Freedom Is Not Free
- Kelly Strong
I watched the flag pass by one day. It fluttered in the breeze. A young Marine saluted it, and then he stood at ease. I looked at him in uniform So young, so tall, so proud, He'd stand out in any crowd. I thought how many men like him Had fallen through the years. How many died on foreign soil? How many mothers' tears? How many pilots' planes shot down? How many died at sea? How many foxholes were soldiers' graves? No, freedom isn't free.
I heard the sound of TAPS one night, When everything was still I listened to the bugler play And felt a sudden chill. I wondered just how many times That TAPS had meant "Amen," When a flag had draped a coffin Of a brother or a friend. I thought of all the children, Of the mothers and the wives, Of fathers, sons and husbands With interrupted lives. I thought about a graveyard At the bottom of the sea Of unmarked graves in Arlington. No, freedom isn't free.
This guy is very funny and a good friend that I have had the privalege to meet here at fox sports. He is no longer a member here but has his own site. However that hasn't curved our friendship one bit. He is also one heck o####ood writer whether it be sports related or just world events. He's very insightful and I feel very honored to be a friend of his. Although I am a good sport and can laugh at myself, there will be a price to pay for this. So please give it a look I promise it's very funny.
The following is an excerpt from the Pete Maravich biogrophy by authors Wayne Federman and Marshall Terrill.
From childhood “Pistol” Pete Maravich mesmerized fans and opponents alike with his audacious ball-handling and relentless scoring. Julius Erving calls him “a basketball genius.” The mop-topped, floppy-socked prodigy became a sports legend at LSU, averaging a staggering 44.2 points per game - the highest in NCAA history. Then a brilliant pro career with the Hawks, Jazz, and Celtics led to enshrinement in the Basketball Hall of Fame and selection as one of the top 50 players in NBA history. But there was a price. Maravich brought a child-like exuberance to the court that often masked a tortured and confused adult. His obsessive personality - he often referred to himself as a “basketball android” - and an inability to win a championship triggered despair and even thoughts of suicide. Eventually he found peace in Christianity and a quiet home life with his wife and sons. Then, at age 40, Maravich died. The exact cause - a congenital heart defect - stunned both the sports and medical worlds. It was called a miracle that he survived his teens, let alone become a superstar athlete.
Many young people such as myself never had the privelage to see Pete Maravich play. Because of that when I hear people speak about some of the greats to play the game of Basketball, it's not very often I hear the name Pistol Pete brought up. So after hearing so many stories from my Father over the years about this legendary player. I decided to buy the book. If you are a fan of Pete Maravich and basketball I highly recommend it.
After Just being halfway through it I decided I had to see some of it for myself. I mean some of the things the book said amazed me that any one player could be that good. I've searched high and low over the internet for any and all films and videos I could find. I did come across quite a few real good ones that I wish I could put here. I did find one however on youtube that's pretty descent and I'll add it to the end of this post. First I want to show you some quotes that I found to be interesting from players both past and present.
"Pistol Pete is a legend to all who understand the history of basketball"--Jason Kidd
"Pete was the man. I'd just sit there and shake my head and say to myself...How'd he do that?"--Magic Johnson
"Pete was the original. He was the best ball handler I ever saw. Ever"--Pat Riley
"Oscar Robertson was the best Guard I ever played against. Jerry West was the best I ever played with. Pete was the best I ever seen."--Elgin Baylor
"I've got a lot of Pistol Pete in my game"--Steve Nash
"Like a master chess player. Pistol Pete saw things nobody else did"--Bill Walton
I've learned all my tricks from Pete Marivich"-- Kobe Bryant
These are just a few of the quotes that are in the book from some of the greats that have played and are playing today. So to anyone who like me was either to young or not born yet to have seen Pistol Pete Maravich play. Next time you are discussing with a friend who is the greatest of all time, befor you say Michael Jordan, Wilt Chamberlain, Jerry West, Kobe Bryant or any other really great player stop and think about Pete Maravich an LSU Tiger and true Basketball legend.
For some odd reason I could not post the video on the blog itself so I added it as a comment for you to see. I hope you enjoy the video and please do comment.
The perfect breakfast as I see it.
