Well now that the first week of the NFL preseason has come and gone let's take a look at some players from each NFC South team who stood out amongst their teamates.
Atlanta Falcons : QB Matt Ryan looked good starting his first game in the NFL. In his limited time behind center he passed for 113 yds and a touchdown while going 9-of-15 passing. Not bad for a rookie and a team without much hopes of making any noise at all this season.
His lone touchdown pass was a 25-yard strike to Roddy White with 10:55 remaining in the first half. White slipped behind the defense on the play and caught the pass as he worked his way into the endzone.
The First team defense also played pretty well considering they started a rookie former LSU CB Chevis Jackson and three second year players Brent Grimes, Tony Taylor and Jamaal Anderson.
Carolina Panthers : DeAngelo williams stood out the most to me on the offensive side of the ball scoreing twice on the ground. He looked to be healthy and pretty quick when running the ball. He's a player the Panthers will rely upon this season to help take the load off QB Jake delhomme. He finished the night with 55 yards on nine carries for the night for an impressive 6.1-yard average.
Big props to the offensive line as well during these runs. The holes they created were huge enough that the worst RB in the league might have been able to look impressive going through.
The defensive line looked really impressive especially Juluis Peppers who forced a fumble and on another play his pressure caused an errant pass which turned into an interception. Peppers is looking to rebound after a mediocre 2007 season.
Tampa Bay : I wasn't all that impressed with the Buc's offense against a very weak Miami defense. Although they were without starting QB Jeff Garcia none of the other QB's showed me that if Garcia goes down they'd be able to carry this team to the playoffs. RB Michael Bennet had a very nice game. He finished the game with 74 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries plus a game-high four receptions for 16 yards.
The defense on the other hand looked like the same Tampa defense we've come to know and expect. CB Ronde Barber had the Bucs' first sack, forced a fumble and tied for the team lead with three tackles.
The defense didn't allow a play longer than 21 yards, not bad for just a half days work. The Buccaneers' starters on defense made an impressive debut in the opening quarter. Miami's first drive was a quick three-and-out — two running plays that went nowhere and an incompletion that was momentarily ruled a fumble.
New Orleans : WR Robert Meachem was the best player for the Saints who opened their preseason on thurs. night in Arizona. He had two highlight catches on the night. A short run brought up a third-and-10 and Brunell fired a 49-yard pass to a diving Meachem at the Cardinals’ 3 yard-line. However his TD catch and run was the most impressive. He caught a pass across the middle of the field and broke three tackles en route to a 60-yard TD that gave the Saints a 24-10 lead in the fourth quarter.
QB Drew Brees went six-for-seven passing on the first drive for 35 yards, including a perfectly thrown pass on third-and-goal from the Cardinals’ 7 yard-line to WR David Patten for a score.
The defense didn't look all that good to me and even though they gave up no huge plays and kept everything in front of them, they still allowed Arizona to make those catches pretty much uncontested. The Saints still have plenty kinks to work out and hopefully look better in the next game when most of the starting defense will get a chance to play a few downs.
Again I know this was just the first game of pre-season and it was against the New Phins. But to say the none of the other Bucs Qbs didn't look good would be ignorant, all of them showed great poise, didn't have any penalties called from the line and no INTs, I didn't expect any different from Saints fans though. I would hate if the Bucs did decent also. I would feel safe with anyone of of our guys coming in to start for our injured QB, than St. Piere or Brunell. The question is, what would the Siants do if Brees was injured!?! Yea, I think we all know the answer to that!!!
Name........CP/AT....YDS...TD...INT
L. McCown......9/15.....70.....0.....0
C. Simms.......8/10.....60.....0.....0
B. Griese.....10/14.....59.....1.....0

Im going with your Saints to win the NFC south I think they have enough pieces to the puzzle together to make a run at the playoffs and from there who knows.
once in the playoffs anything can happen aka last seasons Giants.
And luv the D.A.C.

Rainman,
I never said they didn't look good just that the offense wasn't all that impressive. Ignorant would be saying that Greise is better than Brunell or that simms or McCown is any better as well. None of them have accomplished #### in this league. Also what is ignorant is you thinking I bashed your team. Take a closer look and read it again, in fact read what I said about my own teams defense. You'll see I never gave them all that good props either.
If Brees went down we'd be better off than your Buc's.
JW,
I agree they are all around better than the rest of the NFC South. However that doesn't always translate well to game day play.
Bucs fans are so sensitive! Surely nobody would look very good going w/ their 2nd string QB, but I definately think if we had to go w/ Brunell, we'd have enough to back him up...whereas Bucs would be w/ Griese (which it seems silly to talk about age considering we have Brunell), and Simms who is looking for the first train outta TB.
Brunell, would do just fine for us. The bottom line is he can still throw with accuracy and some zip and we've got the talent on the field to pick up the slack if need be! We've got way to many targets on offense, so even a mediocre QB could still put up decent #'s. Thats the difference between the Saints and the Bucs, we simply have more offensive weapons.
plutonium,
Yes they are and that could be because they fear that the Saints are a better team than them. We'd still win plenty of games with Brunell. He's not all that washed up. Atleast he's not a never been like all 10 backups the Buc's have.
njsaintsfan,
The talent on the Saints offense can make the most mediocre QB look fairly good. We will be a serious threat to all out NFC South rivals for some years to come.
thx guys for commenting and always supporting my blog post.
GAMBIT- You keep saying your SAINTS are better than the BUCS. You my friend are in for one hell of a wake up call big time. Great DEFENSE wins titles !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The Saints D is in no way in hell even close to the BUCS . That again this year is where the Saints will be hurt most. #2 your all dreaming if you think DEUCE is going to be a factor this year your all nuts .If there is one think I know about is over coming serious injuries and rehabing them. I see it every day now both his knees are shot. He will never be 100% or make it threw 3 games SORRY. Bush is over RATED BIG TIME he cant run between the tackels for #### The BUCS running game will be far better than the Saints . The Saints have only 1 advantage QB- WR. thats it deal with it. The Bucs this year will have the #1 DEFENSE in the N.F.L. by week 3 and stay there till the end of the year. Iam looking foward to getting it on SEPT. 7 I couldnt think of a better game for both teams to kick the year off. Our offence needs to score 17-21 points thats it our DEFENSE will do all the rest. The SAINTS ANT GOT THAT AND THATS THE TRUTH DEAL WITH IT ! GO BUCS
P.S GAMBIT YOUR ALRIGHT MAN AND YOUR A GREAT FAN OF THE SAINTS KEEP IT UP PEASE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rusty,
I think you are the one that will be surprised my NFC South rival fan. I also know about coming back from serious knee injuries. I was hit by a car while on foot trying to run across interstate 10. I nearly destroyed my knees but am able to walk and do all the things I've done before. That includes sports. Tech. is far better now than it was when I was a teen. So I think Deuce will be ok. He looks great in camp and has lost weight.
However Pierre Thomas is a great RB as well. You'll see that a combo of him and ex Buc's RB Aaron SDtecker can get the job done if Deuce can't go.
Now I'll agree right now you defense is great. However the Saints have added some key pieces to the defense and before I'll say they'll stink it up like last season...I'll give them a chance to play the games first.
I agree what better way to start the season than against the divisions two best teams. Should be a great one but you best score more than that because Brees,Colston and Meachem will score plenty on your secondary.
Your an alright guy yourself Rusty. I have no problem with you and your opinion at all. It's great to debate and talk smack as long as it's done with class.
Yeah...both bucs games will be tough. Bucs will probably have a better D, but Saints D is nothing to scoff at this year! But no doubt Saints Offense doubles up on Bucs O. Pick your poison Gruden...
The perfect breakfast as I see it.
