Meachem stands out among Saints recievers lastnight.
Aug 08, 2008 | 8:19AM | report this

For Saints WR yesterdays preseason opener against the Arizona Cardinals was a night he'd been anxiously waiting for. It was a chance to prove to all the nay sayers from the "Who Dat" nation that he is no bust. With Marques Colston and Devery Henderson sitting this one out, hed have plenty of oppertunity to do so. He'd not disappoint.

Meachem had a few real nice catches but it was the touchdown catch that showed Saints fans what they had hoped to get from the first round pick last season. One that was mired by various injuries which kept him from suiting up the in the regular season.

He caught a short pass over the middle from quarterback Tyler Palko on third-and-6, then broke two tackles and sidestepped at least four others before reaching the pay dirt.

"It's a dream come true. I waited a whole year for that," said Meachem, who caught four passes for 129 yards, including a spectacular 60-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Afterward, the Saints erupted on the sideline and took turns congratulating Meachem. Coach Sean Payton greeted him with a hug. Meachem also made a terrific play in the second quarter, extending his arms to make a diving catch of a 49-yard pass from quarterback Mark Brunell. He beat safety Aaron Francisco down the left side of the field and held onto the ball as he hit the turf at the Cardinals' 3-yard line.
All of Meachem's heroics, however, came after Brees had already set the tone for the Saints' offense on the game's opening drive.

"When your head coach does that, it is special. The support means a lot to me, it really does," said Meachem, the Saints' first-round pick in 2007 who didn't play a down last season, thanks mostly to a nagging knee injury. "This was a great night for me, but it's just the start for me.

My coaches told me to just keep working hard and not be satisfied with this and to use it as a building block."

Although just as Meachem said it's only the beggining of a long road to winning the Saints fans hearts and becoming a house hold name in the "Big Easy." It's a great start though and with some plays like that during the regular season he'll be well on his way.

Meachem is a lock to make the team so all he needs to do is concentrate on producing and becoming the best WR he possibly can. Which last night showed me he is working hard at doing just that. He far outshined any other reciever with TE Mark Campbell who made some tough catches a close second.

One game down and a seasons worth to go. The road to redemption has begun for Meachem and he's accepted the challenge. It's only the beggining hopefully it ends, at least this season with a Super Bowl victory.

Gambit, join my college pick em game! It's up at my blog!

I picked the Saints to win last night, so as of now in the pre-season I have a record of 3-3. Not bad considering this time of year, the Ravens could beat the Patriots! LOL! Ravens SUCK! GO STEELERS!!!

Good luck to the Saints! What do you think the chances are of a Pittsburgh/New Orleans Super Bowl? It will be from Tampa this season, and I know the Saints aren't popular there. Also, LOTS of Pittsburghers now live in Tampa/St. Pete, so the crowd would be against the Saints. GO STILLERS!!!

Take care! Don't forget about the college pick em game!

Meachum looked really good last night! I think Arrington looked pretty solid as well. It's gonna be a shame if we can't play him as well, I think he'd be a nice backup his rookie year. I see some big things coming from both of them.
On a D note, I think Osama Young turned some heads last night too. I was hoping he'd do well, he's a good kid and he deserves to play this season.
Oh, how did you think Thomas looked? I think he's our future back myself. He runs like a baby Deuce, which was fun to watch.
Gambit, we've got a nice young squad brewing here buddy! I'm thinking some pretty good seasons are in store for the Saints!
Oh, you need to throw some more Floyd on that list! My fav. band!

njsaintsfan,
Yeah Meachum impressed me lastnight. Arrington did real well for a rookie drafted in the seventh round. He'll make the team but sadly Devery may be the odd man out here.

Young has been looking real good through camp and did an excellent job lastnight also. There was some mistakes by the D as a whole but it's early and those things will get fixed.

Thomas has been a player I liked since last preseason. If Deuce can't go the whole way I think Thomas is primed to carry the load. I also have to commend Stecker. He just keeps plugging ahead and produces when called upon. I agree we could be set for a few years with this squad.

Will put some more Floyd for you by the end of the day. Take care and thx for commenting.

I for one don't really put much store as to what happens in the preseason. It only really gives the coaching staff some idea as to who's worth keeping on the team before they decide to making the necessary cuts.
However once the season start those first two or three games'll give us all some idea as to how the teams ought to fare.

Other than that it's just a way for the NFL leverage some cash out of the pockets of the game's die hard fans.

Left you a little snack for you to feast your eyes upon. It's the Olympic swimmer Amanda Beard and her PETA ad that's causing a little controversy in Beijing. Just click on the link(site) provided to view. Enjoy !

Top,
I agree but it does also give us fans an idea of what we might see from te younger players.

Amanda looks good enough for me to wear her.

And that's why these younger players'll have to prove themselves . The guys who get picked up in the first two or there rounds tend to fare a lot better than those who picked up in rounds 6 or 7. That being said it's not all that often that you'll get a Tom Brady dropping into your lap.
