Saints arrive at camp today and anounce contract extension for WR Marques Colston...
Jul 23, 2008 | 7:53PM | report this

After arriving today in Jackson Miss. for the start of training camp tomorrow the Saints have announced they've come into an agreement with it's star wide receiver Marques Colston on a three year agreement.

Colston, a seventh-round pick in 2006, has far outplayed his rookie contract. In two seasons, he's caught 168 passes for 2,240 yardsand 19 touchdowns.

Loomis said he can't remember ever signing a player to an extension after two years. "He's been a nice surprise for us," Loomis said. "We're excited to have Marques and to know that he's going to part of the New Orleans Saints through 2011."

With the edition of TE Jeremy Shockey in a trade yesterday with the Giants, The Saints are headed to training camp loaded on the offensive side of the ball. If you're Saints QB Drew Brees you've got to be excited about the possibility o####reat season.

If many players can stay relatively healthy this team can be the best ever assembled in franchise history.  One huge area to keep a watch on in camp is the battle at DT with first round pick Sedrick Ellis and Hollis Thomas. Thomas always comes into camp over weight so it'll be interesting to see if Eliss is worth the Saints trading down to pick.

If he is able to be the disruptive force up the middle that the Saints hope he can be, It'll go a long way in helping out the still suspect CB's that the Saints have.

Eliss could help free up DE 's Will Smith and Charles Grant from being double teamed as they were most of last season. I think he'll make a huge impact this season for the defense. Possible DROY material.

Another good battle to watch will be the WR position. Colston is a lock but everything else is up for grabs. Last years 1st round pick Robert Meachem was praised by coaches during mini-camp and OTA's. So was rookie Adrian Arrington who is already being compared to Colston. Devery Henderson is sure to be in that mix as well.

I'll be watching carefully also on how the comeback of Jonathan Vilma goes in camp. The Saints aquired him from the Jets this off season. Vilma is a former DROY player but has been slowed by injury and a new defensive scheme in N.Y. that different fit a player with his skill level.

Vilma and Fujita have the makings o####reat pair of LB's. They'll compliment each other well.

The Saints defense will really need to step it up this season. I'm expecting some real fierce battles on that side of the ball during camp. With so many holes that need filling players should be working real hard to earn a roster spot.

Saints will be one of the top offenses this season. Now if the defense can keep teams from hanging 28 or more points on them they should win plenty of football games this season.

Considering that the NFC is weak everywhere but in the East, I'd put your Saints into the top tier instantly (with Dallas and whoever emerges from the fight in the East) for conference champs. Of course, games aren't played on paper, but they looked stacked. I can't wait to see them beat up the Lions at Ford Field this season (near the end of it). It could get really ugly... for the Lions!

Downs,
The Saints will be scary good again like they were in '06 perhaps even better.

man i'm so glad they finally giving this kid some more loot. Colston was a bright spot on an otherwise disappointing season last year. He comes to play every tme he suits up. I'm excited about the new look of the offense. Meachum has to step up and show he was worth that pick last year. So far his injury plagued rookie year has proven him bust material. On the other side of the ball i'm not so excited. I still feel this defense is a few good players away from being able to stop the majority of recievers in the league. Dline and LB look solid atm. Cornerback, well, we have been lacking a solid shutdown tandem of corners for a longtime

h8t3D1,

The defense will be fine. With good pressure from Eliss and from Will Smith the CB's will look better than what we all know they are.

Colstone extension was a must! I'm glad they got that over with also.

Heard on WWL this morning that both Ellis and Porter are holdouts. WTF is up, man...I know they'll sign, but I just hate to hear about that

I AM glad, however, that they've secured Colston. If I were loomis, I would have been drooling over giving this kid a FAT contract. IMO, he deserves back pay for the past two seasons. Or, reparations...if you wanna be a #### about it.

Plutonium,
Eliss and Porter's holdouts were already expected. With no real action with other rookies signing I new this would happen. They'll be signed though in a few days.

Getting Colston signed an extension and pay raise was a must. The sooner the better because this kid just keeps getting better and better each season.

Signing Colston is a breath of fresh air!!!! I knew it would happen, but now it's official. Any idea of the contract details?

Don't worry to much about our defensive secondary fellas. The pressure thats going to be put on the opposing QB by Ellis and Vilma will force the throw which in-turn will not allow the deep ball which will not allow our DB's to get smoked (as often)! In fact the pass rush is even going to make David look good this year. I actually expect him to have a few interceptions as well as Porter(who can apparently handle the long ball just in case it happens) I also hope to see Usama Young play this season, I think he's going to be a half decent corner as well. I do think we still need to tie the defensive together a little bit better, but I think this squad will do just fine for the time being. With the amount of points we have the ability to put up, we only need them to slow the other team down a little. I'm certain we'll be making a ton of moves for free agents next year due to the fact we end up with only 3 draft picks in '09, as of now. However that is another story in itself. Keep up the good posts Gambit, I always enjoy reading your stuff man!

njsaintsfan,
I agree with you about the defense. Pressure busts pipes and obviously deep pass plays as well. A good pass rush makes any corner look good. Ellis will provide such a thing. If you double team him then you lose any way because we have excellent DE's. It's like pick your poison.

thx dude I appreciate that compliment.

I definately get the impression that they (gholston, dorsey, ellis) are waiting for the first guy to sign, so they can demand more...

plutonium,
Gholston deal done now as of today. All it'll take is for someone closer to Ellis but in front of him and then the Saints and his agent will have #'s to work with.
