The New Orleans Saints have in my honest opinion became the top offense on paper in the NFC hands down today. New Orleans has aquired tightend Jeremy Shockey from the N.Y.Giants for a 2009 2nd and 5th round pick. Shockey has been disgruntled the past few years while in N.Y. with his lack of being part of the vertical game plan.
Shockey brings a dimension to the New Orleans Saints that was missing since Shaun Payton has taken over the team. Brees is sure to benifit well from this trade as he'll have an added safety valve for when nothings open downfield. Not to mention Shockey is also a complete tightend. He has great hands, speed and can run block as well. It's rare to get all those qualities from one man at that position.
Another player who will benifit well from this trade also is Reggie Bush. He's such a huge part of the passing game himself. When receiving the ball on swing passes he'll have a TE that can get out and block for him. With camp just a day away it'll be interesting to see how he meshes with the team.
One thing though the Saints TE position has just become real crowded. Eric Johnson, Mark Campbell and Billy Miller will all be battleing it out for a roster position. Miller will probably end up being the odd man out by the time the season begins.
One thing is apparent and that's the Saints are building a championship caliber team. Now we just have to wait and see it all come together. Can you say "Black and Gold Super Bowl!"
You touched on the most important thing about this trade.
It will open things up for Mcallister and Bush. As well as Colston.
I wouldnt be surprise to see the Saints go to a lot more 2 tight end sets and 2 back sets like Sean Peyton used when he coached in Dallas.
Shockey's presence and Deuce being healthy again should let them use more ball control offense, and keep the defense off the field, which is still their weak area.
If they can improve on that defense and pass coverage problems from last year, they just might challenge Dallas for the NFC this season.
Good pickup by the Saints, who needed a pass catching TE, and Shockey can split the seam. Perhaps a reunion with Payton will be what he needed. The NFC South just got a lot tougher.
Yo Gambit, your Saints were my pick to win that division without Shockey, but with him, Colston will now see less double coverage and will definitely shine...the only thing you should be thinking about is can he stay healthy, can Reggie and Deuce stay healthy? Those are big questions that will determine if the Saints will compete for the Super Bowl or miss the playoffs.
With them having Shockey I have to agree with you on the two TE set. Shockey coupled with a Healthy Eric Johnson allow you to do lots of new things.
I think the defense will surprise many this season.
jon,
I agree great pickup and a win/win for both teams.
Payton nor Brees will put up with an attitude so he'll have his Ego checked at the door and stored away for the as long as he's a Saint. I wonder what most other teams in the NFC South are thinking?
Nique,
Of course I'm biased aren't we all?
SRM,
Heaalth can be the only thing I see stopping this team from being dominate!
I'll check that offer out in a little bit LOL!
aero,
Your Buc's are in trouble my friend, LOL! It will be an excititng season no doubt.
Finally we got something that has been missing around here since the days of Wesley Walls. If Suan Payton can keep this guy in check off the field (which I think he can), what a great upgrade on it. Our tight end position with Mark Campell and those other scrubs was average at best. This guy reminds me of Kyle Turley who doesn't take #### from nobody. We need a little of that on this team. He wore out his welcome in New York and I hope he does not do that here. I didn't like the trade when it first surfaced during the draft due to his character issues, but his issues are not where it counts on Sundays. Great upgrade, look out Dallas.
I've been a proponent of this trade since I first heard about it...I even called my bro in Denver and said "Mark my words...you will see Shockey in black and gold next year".
The good news is that we just added a new dimension to our offense, which means LOTS of new options. The bad news is that this doesn't AUTOMATICALLY make us a better team. The important thing is that we maximize our options, and not just expect things to get easier all of a sudden. I do have hope that an offensive mind like Payton, and a great QB like Brees will maximize our options.
I've been a cubs fan long enough to never predict a championship for my team until the last out is recorded in the 9th inning...so...I won't say it yet...come back to me in Feb!
Yeah finally we do have that added dimension. I agree he does remind me of Turly also.
SRM,
Works for me!
plutonium,
No this doesn't make the Saints automaticaly very good. It just makes them dangerous. To be very good It'll take, hardwork, team chemistry, good gameplanning and good execution of said game plan to be great.
gambitxxx
In one fail swoop the Saints have shifted the balance of power within the NFC South.
The Bucs have stood still whereas the Saints have made themselves considerably better in acquiring Shockey. It makes their offense all the more potent with another option altogether for Brees.

This is a tremendous pick up for the Saints. The window of opportunity is wide open, and that's what every teams builds for. Shockey never accepted Manning in N.Y. and considered the Giants his team. He was so shocked that they won without him that he didn't even attend the Super Bowl or the team's trip to the White House. It's Eli's team and time to move on.
Shockey enters The Big Easy knowing it's not his team. That's good for all concerned. He will be revitalized and ready to prove himself and ready to compete. Make no mistake, he's a fierce competitor!
This move pushes the Saints over the top in the division. Playoff team? Oh yes. To what successful extent is yet to be determined. The defensive adjustments in the offseason were steps in the right direction. If the defense can create some 3-and-out situation and continue to give the ball back to the offense, the sky's the limit. Come playoff time, it's a time for defenses to make or break a team. The jury's out on this defense, now they have to prove themselves. One thing is certain, the Saints will be exciting to watch in '08.
justan,
On paper there is no team better than the Saints in the NFC. Problem is how many of these players are going to shake back from their injuries? The Saints have I think 5-6 players that are vital to the success of this team coming off season ending injuries from '07.
Midnite,
The only defensive position that is of question really is the DB's. However by getting Ellis in the draft the Saints have a player to absorb the double for Grant and Smith. If teams choose not to double Ellis though, more times than not he'll be disrupting the play. So suspect DB's they'll still look good because of a very good DL.
Rev.,
Deuce is real close to 100% and says he'll be able to give it a full go by the first preseason game. We shall ssee what's up when camp opens tomorrow.
Gruden's probably orgasming on himself now that Greenbay is exploring offers for Favre! You guys are toast this season. Black and Gold superbowl rev.
Head is getting better all the time. THX for the concern.
moonrider,
I like the sound of that but there is lots of work to do still.
uggg...the last thing the goddam Bucs need is hope. If they get Favre...it's going to be one hell of a season. Each game is going to be a #### grabber, and I'll bet a handful of nuts that the Saints still manage to come out on top!
plutonium,
Buc's can only hope to keep it close with the Saints.
itdoesnotmatter,
I can give you links to just as many people who think different than you whether Shockey is a good blocker. Everyone has an opinion dude and you are certainly entitled to your own.
gambit, you state that NO has the best offense in the NFC and the best team on paper in the NFC. Your wrong on both counts. The correct answer is Dallas.
OL- Dallas had 3 Pro bowlers and Scounts Inc. named them the 2nd best OL.
TE- Witten has become the best all around TE in the NFL. Great run blocker and tremendous receiver.
WR- Owens>Colston, Crayton>Henderson, this doesn't even include Glenn.
RB- McAllister is coming back after a 2nd knee injury, Barber is a starter this year and will be a force. Bush has been a disappointment, Jones and Choice are unknown. Dallas has more upside then NO at the RB position.
QB- Romo and Brees are equal.
Front 7- The Dallas LBs are the best in the NFL. This gives Dallas a better overall front 7.
Secondary- Dallas hands down.
I'm not sure if you've noticed the folks who think this is a bittersweet move to pick up Shockey because they believe that our defense is what the front office should really be focusing on. However this move not only solidifies the offense but will in fact have a dramatic effect on the defense as well. It will basically keep them on the sidelines longer!! It will increase our 3rd down conversion percentage, thus accomplishing one of Sean Paytons favorite things to do: Kill the Clock
Not only will the ground game increase but our recievers are going to have a stellar season as well. The good thing for Shockey (being that he doesn't particularly like to block that often) is that Payton loves to throw the ball. So Jeremy will be getting his share of tosses and just his presence on the field will open up a slew of options for the wide outs and the backs. I for one am not a huge J.S. fan but he is a baller and I'm excited to see how he works out for us. I really think we ahve a legitimate shot this year fellas!
itdoesnotmatter - As for Shockey and his blocking you stated "That's not been his thing...EVER...and I don't see it becoming part of his game".
That's ludicrous. The number one first and foremost requirement for a tight end is blocking ability. As a fan in the NFC East I've extensively seen Shockey play since he came to the league in 2002. He's a huge contributing factor in Brandon Jacobs' and Tiki Barber's rushing success.
He didn't get Tony Gonzales and Jason Witten stats with the Giants. He was 43rd in the league in number of catches and 63rd in the league in receiving yards. That being said, I'd bet he's in for a career best year in '09 with the saints. He's 6' 5" and 250 pounds of badass that thrives on pushing around defensive ends just as much as he enjoys going over the middle in traffic. He's fierce, no matter the assignment.
Yeah we've seen just how good you offense is compared to ours already. Last I remember we looked better head up. Romo is not even close to being as good as Brees.
The perfect breakfast as I see it.
