There's just under three weeks until the start of training camp gets underway and the Saints haven't signed WR Marques Colston to a new deal. Should we as Saints fans be worried that our best receiver has yet to be given the money he rightfully earned? The answer is no because when you look at the Saints track record they have always done a great job at getting the money into it's star players bank accounts.
The problem is trying to figure out what is his market worth. His stats are as good as any of the top WR such as Chad Johnson, Larry Fitzgerald and Reggie Wayne. However demanding similar money may be a problem. He doesn't have the track record like these guys even though he has out performed his original contract big time. Colston is scheduled to make $445,000 this season a raise from last years $360,000.
There is no urgency with the Saints to get this done either because he'll be a restricted free-agent come next season. They'll have the opportunity to match any offer as long as they also tender a one year qualifying offer as well. Depending on the size of that offer teams would be required to surrender one or more top draft picks to the Saints to pry him away. However it's in my honest opinion that they need to get this done this season and not wait. It would go a long way with Colston to see the Saints are committed to him and what he brings to the team.
Colston has gone about quietly wanting a new deal done before the start of training camp. However one can speculate that if it's not done he'll be a hold out come that time. GM Mickey Loomis has always warned players that if they holdout he'll not renegotiate with those players. One thing his agent may argue is that he has been woefully underpaid so far but the Saints will more than likely counter with they are paying for the future not the past. Whatever the case you can be almost certain that a deal will get done. Just don't hold your breath hoping it's anytime soon.
In other news there has been no action with regarding contracts for this years draft picks. The later round picks usually work themselves out. As for first round pick Sedrick Ellis may miss a few days of training camp but that's nothing unusual when it comes to top picks. There's no reason to be worried about that one.
Peyton and Eli Manning will be back home this Thursday doing a promotion for Oreo double stuff at their old school Isidore Newman. They will have an ####"Lick Off,"
competing with 10 pairs of finalists selected through a
national sweepstakes to see who can "twist, lick and
dunk" the fastest for a chance to win $10,000. Parents
Archie and Olivia will serve as grand marshals for the
event.

Tell me that there's some sanity within the Saints' front office ? 'cause I can tell you this if they're not prepared to offer him a new contract. Then they'd be bigger fools than I'd have thought them to be.
He may well have been the only bright point to what was a lackluster season for them last year.
I've a new post up titled Name The Fighter ? Let me know what you think as to the merits of the piece ? I'll look forward to reading your comments.
justan',
The deal will get done there is no question about that. How soon it gets done is a whole another thing. I believe that if the Saints tell him look well give you a lucrative deal at the end of this season if you don't hold out he'd be at camp.
See were still havin problems with the old noggin. Deal, definatly Deal. Breeze needs his go to guy. And he does it all, can go deep, big enough to go over the middle. Remember? Come on, Focus.
I have no oppinion or comment on the Oreo Match up..
I wasn't implying whether the Saints should give Colston what he wants...that's a no brainer. It was just something I put out there for my homeboys who visit here to get updated on. Although I enjoy your humoristic way of putting it.
Speaking of "Humoristic" . The Manning brothers in a "Lick Off" There were just to many avenues to "go down on" that one. But i dindt want to "Dirty" up your blog. Who would want that dumped in their "lap"? And that kind of humor is best served "oraly" anyway.
What is Colston asking for? The Bucs finally signed their running back in the same type of situation, Earnest Graham, who was working on a minimum NFL contract when he stepped up and showed what he could do last season... Earnest got paid.
Colston doesn't strike me as the type to make a big fuss like the prima donnas. The Saints shouldn't have to pay him top dollar, like you say, yet... If they put together a contract rich in performance clauses while getting him a fair amount, I'd bet he'd jump at that...
B@O,
lmfao! Dude you're a sick puppy. The lick off is for the kids not them...I think anyway.
Dwindy,
There is no report about the amount he is asking for. As for the Buc's I think it came down to how they do business and the Saints don't do it that way. He really isn't making any noise about it as much as us fans and media are.Very good character guy Colston I agree with the right clauses and just enough money he'll put his John Hancock on the dotted line quickly.
I'm hanging in ok for now but the drought is killing me.
Thx guys for commenting as always please do return.

The longer that management takes the more asinine they make themselves look in the eyes of the fans. Colston has been more of a catalyst for this team than Bush has been. Though it's been Bush who's getting the praise.
Her a## maybe Reggie's now but in time it'll be something of a strain to deal with.
There'll come a time when Reggie's too caught up with nailin' Kardashian than he will be about football. And of that you can be assured.
Not a saints fan but I'm a huge fan of Colston and it would be the Front Office biggest personnel mistake since the day they traded for Ricky Williams if they don't give this guy a LONG-term contract A.S.A.P. He's the best skilled player on the Saints team, by far, and he's easily one of the Top 5 or 6 receivers in the league. I was so enamored with his rookie season that I was totally shocked he did not win ROOKIE OF THE YEAR...they gave it to Vince Young that year and that was bull#hit!!!...V.Y. was average at best during that rookie year and didn't do anything exceptional, on the contrary Colston had over 1,000 yards that same year and was the Go-To guy for qb Brees, he got robbed of the award!!!
jokerpace,
I agree Colston was the best of that rookie class in 2006. He'll get a deal that'll be sweet I am certain of that. When the deal is done is what I am not certain of. He's still under contract to play this season. As much as I think he deserves it he's still obligated to honor the remainder of his contract.
The perfect breakfast as I see it.
