All the offseason talk about who will be the top teams in the NFC this season doesn't include any team from the South division. Most people want to already crown the Dallas Cowboys the conference champs. Seattle gets talked about as one team who should make as much noise as it's fans. Greenbay is still for whatever reason a playoff team in most peoples minds even without the future HOF QB Brett Favre. Nobody is giving a team from the NFC South much respect.
Not last years division winner Tampa. Nope not the New Orleans Saints and it's High Powerd offense. Neither is Carolina whose QB is back in the saddle after off-season elbow Surgery and a new feature back rookie Jonathan Stewart, not to mention one of the best WR in the game Steve Smith. As for the Falcons it's obvious why nobody is giving them a snowballs chance in hell to be much of anything.
So this has got me to thinking why is this so? Is it because each team from the South division was subpar last season? Surely that can't be what it is. It's a new year and new players to fill in the holes that plagued each last season. Is it because of all four teams the Saints are the only to not make a Superbowl and only Tampa has won one? Nobody can be naive enough to believe that'll happen for as long as the NFL exist.
So I'll break down the teams how I see it and try to come up with something that seems to have flown past me but most can see clearly.
The Panthers have always been a tough team with the exception of last season. With Delhomme injured and a QB like David Carr running the show it wasn't surprising. This off-season though Jake will be back but his affectivness after having Tommy John sugery is questionable. Can he be affective enough to get the ball into the best player they have hands enough to be succesful? I think he can and with Muhsin Muhammad back that'll give him another option that the team lacked big last season.
The Panthers also added D.J. Hackett who can be a good third option as well. Also with a backfield consisting of DeAngelo Williams and rookie first round pick Jonathan Stewart handling the rushing attack it'll take some pressure off of Delhomme. The offense needs to make it happen and score as often as possible. Last season they only avg. 16.7 points a game. I can't see that happening all over again.
The defense is where they are sorely lacking in my opinion. Julius Peppers has to find himself and play with more intensity. He's the leader of that side of the ball, although I just don't think he has the fire anymore to produce like he once did. With Dan Morgan and Ruckers hanging up the pads, this defense is a shell of what it once was.
So I see them finishing third in the division. Until they can add some more peices to the defense I'll not change my opinion on this one.
Prediction: 8-8 and no playoffs for this group.
Tampa is the defending division winner from last season. Now I do believe they were a product of a horrible division of which they were a little better than the rest. However this season they are better than last. Earnest Graham was surprising to say the least and should be a good RB again this season. He has good speed to go along with power.
Jeff Garcia is and always has been a good QB who knows how to win games. His pocket presence is very good and knows how to get the ball into the ageless wonder and speedster Joey Galloways hands. WR Ike Hilliard had a very good season as well as the #2 man. They could however use more production from Michael Clayton who was virtualy a no show last year.
On the defensive side of the ball Tampa is still Tampa. They've always played with good intensity and seem to be in the right place at the right time. With Gains Adams coming along at DE, and LB Derrick Brooks still giving teams fits, I stll think this is the strength of this team. Ronde Barber is a very good vet. and with a draft pick like Aquib Talib the DB's who ranked 1st in the league in passing yards allowed should be just about as good.
They'll push for another division title but I see them falling short. Although if they do win it I'll not be surprised one bit.
Prediction: 9-7 possible wildcard, who knows depends on the rest of the conference records.
New Orleans was probably the biggest disappointment of any team last season. I know it was for me atleast. For the first four games I thought I was watching the same Saints Jim Haslett coached his last season. They had spurts of looking like the 2006 Saints here and there but without Deuce McAlister on the field, I'm not sure the could have beaten the Raiders. Deuce is coming off his second knee Surgery in 3 seasons. Although it isn't the same knee as the first, can he really shake back and be the powerful runner he was in '06? That's a question that remains to be answerd.
Drew Brees in my opinion has been the best QB the past two seasons. He's done almost as much as Peyton Manning or Tom Brady with less talented wideouts. I fully expect him to continue producing in the passing game again this season. With the gem they found in Marquis Colston, who seems to catch everything thrown his way, why shouldn't I? Word is from the Saints personel that second year WR and last years first round pick Robert Meachem has taken big strides after sitting out all of last season with a nagging injury.
Throw in rookie Adrian Arrington who is also getting rave reviews from coaches, hell push Devery Henderson for the #3 reciever position. Bush ramains a mystery to me still. I'm not ready to say he can carry the load if Deuce isn't able to produce. Although I like Pierre Thomas and what he has shown so far.
The defense of the Saints was sicking and that's putting it lightly. Although they were 13th in the league against the run, teams were able to mix it up and make huge plays over the top in the passing game. That'll not happen again this season as and First round pick Sedrick Ellis will be a force to be reckon with. He'll apply pressure up the middle on QB's and not allowing them to sit back and burn the DB's. Also he is a monster at stuffing the run. Ellis has the speed to move lateral and long arms to reach out and tackle RB's trying to bounce outside. That'll force offenses to double up on him freeing up the Saints very good DE's.
Free agent pickup Jonathan Vilma was a huge acquisition for them. The former DROY will pay big dividends for the Saints this season. Mike McKenzies injury is a concern but 2nd year CB Usama Young has looked good and coach Payton is impressed with rookie Tracy Porter so far.
I think the Saints have the right players and attitude to win the division. With the only real competition comeing from Tampa.
Prediction:10-6 maybe better if Duece can bust loose once again. I do however see them getting to the second round of the playoffs atleast.
The Atlanta Falcons have more issues than playboy magazine. Sure they have gotten a pretty good QB in Matt Ryan who someday may have their fans forgeting the whole Mike Vick thing. However this team has some character issues all over the place. I'm not to sure a first year coach with a rookie QB can change that in one season. As a tam they ranked almost dead last in well everything.
Former Saints WR Joe Horn(we still love you here Joe) is looking for a window to fly out of after just one very unproductive season. After that the only recievers with a name is Michael Jenkins who is very incosistant and Brian Finneran who'll never be much of anything more than he already is.
Jerious Norwood showed he can run at times but it'll take more than just a descent run game to get these falcons flying. Although they did pickup a nice free-agent in Michael Turner but will he be able to do the same in Atlanta as he did filling in for L.T in San Diego? I highly doubt it, but one never truely knows.
On the otherside it get's no better a sfar as big names go. Sure there is John Abraham,Keith Brooking and Lawyer Milloy but both Milloy and Brookings are old vets and probably in the decline of their careers. Gone is CB DeAngelo Hall who although had attitude problems he was a top 3 CB in this league.
Now they'll rely heavily on young CB's and who knows rookie Chevis Jackson from LSU just might be the best one they have. It will be quite some years befor this team is ready to compete with the rest of the division much more the league itself. Sucks to be a Falcons fan right now because I'm pretty sure a Miami like '07 season is in store for this team.
Yeah as you guessed it they'll finish dead last in the division if not the whole conference or league. Whew! glad that's over with I was getting depressed just typing about them.
Prediction: 5-11 maybe worse depends on if the team implodes or not. This is giving them the benifit of the doubt.
So there it is ladies and gentleman my breakdown of the NFC South teams and possible likely finishes. Feel free to add your opinion or just tell me I took one to many blows to the head. I look forward to your comments.
good article, good overall theory...not many people do give the NFC S the respect we deserve....but i can also see the biast opinion thnking the saints are going 10-6....but of coare everyone is biast when it comes to their teams...there for i must defend your predection of the bucs going 9-7 a little weak....there are roughly around 7 teams we are playing that ranked less than 21 in stopping the run...those games i can guarantee 150+ yards on the ground....11-5 qinning the 1st round in the playoffs is what the bucs are going to do!
djbuc,
thx and thx! I'm so tired of hearing the Cowboys are going to do this and that but every year come playoffs they choke...enough already!
Yes I am biast to my Saints and for that very same reason I respect yours towards the bucs. Although I can see Gruden being the undoing o####reat season. I think his philosophy is old ans stale. Yoor team will have a great running game no doubt. Especialy if you can get some new tires on the cady. That's a duel threat much like the Saints had with Deuce and Bush in '06.
P.S. Don't hate on Dallas just because they're the favorites. It's just a preseason prediction. I'm sure last year you were loving it when everyone was picking New Orleans as the favorite.
As I said Brees has had a lot less Talent to throw to. I wasn't counting wins only yards and completions. So yes you are right in a way but I am not wrong either. depends on what one is taking into account. Just for you and so others will not get it confused I'll edit that part.
P.S. I don't dislike Dallas at all just get tired of hearing the same every year only to watch them choke every season. Sure I loved it because that's a first in the history of the franchise.
Nice picks, and I certainly hope the Saints can pull it off. I've had a certain affinity for them ever since Colston pushed me to the top of my fantasy league two years ago. And I would really rather see NO over TB any day
DL 1957,
Thx I appreciate that. I truely believe they will and that's not the homer in me saying so. I truely believe that their isn't anyone in the division better. I actually think they are better than most of the NFC period.
Colston is a stud isn't he. To come almost close to not being drafted to a top ten WR the past two seasons speaks volumes for him. He's a bright young man with great hands and nice size. If possible it would be smart to draft him again this season for your fantasy league. I know I'll be shooting for him with my second pick in both my leagues.
Deuce is the key for the Saints. If he can recapture that power, the sky is the limit, because there is no question they have a very good passing game. I agree the Bucs will be their main obstacle to a division title, but with a healthy Deuce things are looking up for the Saints.
i think people still think GB is a playoff team becuase of their good defense and wep's on offense. Favre did not carry the team by any means last year, he helped them move along... you can not be a 13-3 team just beacause one player. granted rodgers has not proven anything yet i agree.
and i think this is one of the hardest divisions to predict this year... could go anyway ('cept atlanta)...ha.... good picks though i could see it all happening.. i think N.O.'s def is the big key here
aero,
Good to hear from you again. I agree so goes Duece so goes the Saints. Although I think they can do better than they did last season without him, they'll not beat out a much improved Tampa team. thx for commenting.
brnxbm,
I agree with you that G.B. is a good team and never meant to give the impression that they wasn't. However Rodgers can make or break this team if he plays very sporadic. As you said he hasn't proven himself yet.
I agree also it is one of the toughest to predict. Carolina could very well come up huge this season and bring the walls down on the division. Tampa is much improved, however I still see the Saints who shored up it's defense and a high powerd offense as the better team.
thx for commenting. Your opinion ans is everyones are always welcomed.
DL1957--funny how fantasy football opens your eyes to players you might not have noticed before. I had this guy named Ryan Grant from Green Bay on my team last year, and had never even heard from him...but, well of course everyone knows him now!
Gambit--The Cowboys are good...and I smile everytime they lose. I really hope they don't win it all this year, because that would give creedence to all those Dallas fans to say "you see...I told you so". And there's nothing that I hate more than hearing THAT. Especially from a Cowboys fan. Lookin forward to the season!!
plutonium,
I just hate the fact that everyone picks them every season and they stink it up. I also think that Coboy fans act as if their team is Gods gift to football. I just as you enjoy to see them lose every year if for nothing more than to see the fans be miserable.
gambitxxx, To give you a perspective from a non-NFC fan.
The NFC south does often get overlooked, especially in the past 3 years where the whole NFC was being overlooked............Until last year that is when I became a temporary Giants fan for the month of February. (Until they beat the Patriots)
All and all the NFC south has represented it's self quite well during the last 6 years..........They have 2 Superbowl appearances (1 win) and 4 NFC Championship games.
This year I can see the Saints winning the division with a 10-6 record with the Panthers just behind at 9-7.
As for the Buc's I still believe that Gruden was handed the keys to a brand new Lincoln back in 2002 and hasn't done any thing with it...........Not even an oil change!
evilquacks,
that's what I was loking for a comment from someone outside the NFC South. It baffles me how we always never get talked about until close till the end. Teams like Dallas who look good on paper never amount to #### come playoff time. I feel they'll do much of the same this year.
So you think the Panthers will be better than the Buc's I see. That could be very well possible. I'm still skeptical about their defense though. As for Gruden I agree with you. His scheme is old and rusty in my opinion. Sometimes it seems he hasn't a clue to as what he is doing. Will be an interesting season for the NFC South. I'm ready to see what transpires.
you guys are funny...the only thing gruden was handed was an amazing defense...his fire for the game and for the offense is what pushed us to the ring....dungy wasnt the one that drafted any of our main guys either...gruden has a very complex offensive system and never had the same qb for consecutive seasons untill now with Garcia....with that in mind you will see what kind of system we run here, short dumps, mid posts, and of coarse the long bomb to galloway...which i need not to mention ruins the saints secondary almost each game...this season the bucs are going to show the league that they will not just be known for there stingy defense....and watch out for Josh Johnson within the next 3 years to take over and become our franchise QB! you say old and rusty but gruden has had a different QB every year since 02!
dj...you talk about "the long bomb to galloway" as though it's a given that it will "ruin the saint's secondary". We all know that a long bomb requires an almost non-existant pass rush, plus a cornerback who forgets whose team he is playing for in order for it to "ruin" a secondary almost each game. I think, this year, the Saints are lacking both those necessary ingredients this year. And...well...it's been said before, and I'm not sure still how I feel about it, but Galloway has continued to defy his age. I'm not sure how much longer that's going to last.
galloway will last long enough for dexter jackson to make the transition into the pro world then he will become our deep threat....look, fact is everyone not only over looks this division, but over looks the bucs...the only team with a SB ring in this division....i understand that we are not consistant...but thats what happens when key players are hit with an injury...we have an O line that is getting better every year, the addition of Faine has solidified our C....this is a new year for our franchise, and basically for our division....all 4 teams will become consistant threats in the years to come
you guys are funny. dj Jeff Fain was a huge pickup for your Buc's I can't believe the Saints allowed him to get away. Also your right the Falcons will be stuck in the mud for some time. Have a safe and happy 4th of July weekend guys.
besides the east has any other division have all 3 out of the 4 play in the SB, all 4 play in the NFC CHAMPIONSHIP game, and so on and so forth? granted in 06 was the saints only real shot at the big dance...there the only team in our division that hasnt played in the SB. gotta count for something agaisnt some other division that i thnk are pretty weak...like the patrios division...come on now....really, they get to play the worst teams twice each season!!!!!
What would you think of Tampa's chances if they trotted Bret Favre out on the field with the first team offense??? I've been wrong before, but I keep getting the feeling something is in the wind. Evidently Bret has asked to be released and the Pack won't do it. It's almost like there has been some back room dealing. The Bucs are standing firm on Garcia's call for a new deal... That really makes me wonder as Jeff is getting one of the lowest contracts for a starting QB in the league...
the only reason they are standing firm on garcia is due to his style of age conflicting with his age...they are going to see how he performs with a second year under his belt...thats why all talks on contracts with him were suspended untill next season...
gambitxxx
With all of the talk amongst the NFC teams as you say. And wherein that we're hearing of Jones' alleged desire for Joe Horn to be a Cowboy. Things are taking on a whole new meaning within the division.
I don't know what'll be thrown at us by the teams but I do believe that it's got to be a 'helluva' lot better than what we served up with last year. Some of the football within the division was downright mediocre at times. And that was from all of the teams therein. Injuries or no injuries that's not what the fan really expect to see.
I've a new NFL post up titled Greed Is Only Good When You Care About Yourselves And Not The Consumers Of The Product ! Let me know what you think as to the merits of the piece ? I'll look forward to reading your comments.
I agree with most post, that the nfc south is an overlooked divison. Heck i've got to the point i just tune out espn and the nfl network, because they must be owned by the cowboys and pats, that seems to be the only teams they want to discuss. Back to the nfc south, being a panther fan , i saw our team cut alot of players this off season. I felt it was time to get younger and stronger too. This divison could be wide open the bucs allways with good d, the saints are strong, the panthers can probably surprise alot of teams maybe take the divison. There are good rivals in the south sorry we get overlooked.
I can't wait for this season to start. One because I love football and secondly because I am waiting to see the Saints make all of you prediction guys look silly. Everyone overestimates them -- I predict the same as last season or worse.
all im going to say is that the saints were favored last year to take it all the way....lets see everyone jump back on the wagon when the wheels fall off again
whaddup gambit,
Thanx for the read bro. You really think Meachum is #2 reciever quality? I still think Pattens old bones got rejuvenated by the Saints offense and it's gonna be hard to get him out the #2 position. Colston and Patten are on lock, after that it will get interesting during camp. Do we still have that same scrub Johnson as a TE? Campell should take that spot he's got better hands and is a good blocker but we need major help at that position.I think 10-6 is a realistic prediction for the Saints. I think the Bucs will go as Garcia goes (he's getting old man). The Panthers are gonna be alot better than everybody thinks they are. The Falcons, well, I actually find myself feeling sorry for the dirty birds (WOW!) Joe shoulda just took a pay cut and stayed in the N.O. man. I would love to see a great Saints player actually finish thier carreer with the team instead resigning for a day to retire a Saint (Rickey Jackson) Poor Joe.
Will I agree with your record predictions...I don't agree with your knowledge of the Atlanta Falcons. You said that Joe Horn then M. Jenkins was the top receivers in Atlanta. You are completely wrong....RODDY WHITE is the top receiver in atlanta with more than 1200 yards receiving last year...Laurent Robinson is the #2 receiver right now with Jenkins and Horn pulling up the rear.
TXfalcon,
I was talking in terms of talent. Even as an old vet Horn is better than anything you have on that team. You think all of a sudden he became garbage when he got to Atlanta? No it's because his heart isn't there with that team.
The Mike Jenkins thing was a mistake and thx for the correction, I'm sorry about that. Don't know enough about this Robinson guy as a matter of fact you are correct the Falcons are such a bore (I hate that to because they are our rival) that I hadn't spent much time learning all I could about them. Sorry but you guys suck that much!
Sorry folks, There's a tried and true method for predicting the NFC South winner. I believe it's Carolina's turn unless I'm mistaken. '02 - Tampa Bay, '03 - Carolina, 04 - Atlanta, '05 - (sorry, drawing a blank), 06 - New Orleans, '07 - Tampa Bay....
It's Carolina's turn. Besides, I think the offense will be good enough to keep the defense off the field and outscore the comp. Besides, they have an easy schedule. And, no one is looking for them.
New Orleans - Deuce and Drew are both very old and oft injured to be playing pro football
Atlanta - Enough said. It's going to be a while unless their new QB surprises and that's not likely.
Tampa - Oddly enough, could repeat. I think Jeff Garcia will have what it takes for a while to come.
Zon,
Are you kidding me dude, You really buy into that last will be first ####? That will not go on forever.
Carolina- has a QB who is coming of serious surgery. Besides he wasn't a great QB to begin with.
New Orleans-Deuce and Brees very old? Dude what you been smoking? Brees has started every game since being with the Saints. Deuce may have been hurt last season but will be ready to go.
Atlanta- 'Nuff said
Tampa- The biggest threat to the Saints but not as good as advertised.
All I want is some dam football to get started. Were the BUCS great last year hell no ! You will see a much better team this year for sure. 11-5 For my BUCS in 08 its coming . SOUTH CHAMPS AGAIN WITH PRIDE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The perfect breakfast as I see it.
