Athletes and cheating, it's nothing new at all.
May 23, 2008 | 9:18AM | report this

As long as there's been athletic competition involving money, there has been cheating. As early as 388 b.c. a boxer named Eupolus of Thessaly bribed three other boxers to take bribes in the Olympic games. Athletes have been cheating ever since.

It's important to keep this in mind when you hear people yearn for the good old days. "Steroids are ruining our hollowed records they'll say." How can my kid  root for criminals?" And don't for get this one, "These guys are so overpaid they don't care if we win or lose." Ultimately it's all nonsense.

These problems have been with sports as long as people have been receiving money to perform them. The truth is we alway idealize the way sports were when we was kids for exactly that same reason: we were kids.

The other stuff was there as Reggie Jackson was overpaid, ####lord Perry was a cheater, and Denny McLain was a crook. But how did our team do today Dad is all that matterd, so should it be now. Why should we realy care if the N.E. Patriots cheated? It isn't the first time and certainly will not be the last time a team or athlete will cheat to win.

Maybe I'm a rediculous optimist, but I truly believe that at the end of the day, when an athlete steps onto the field of play, he doesn't care if he's awaiting a trial date for a handgun possesion. He just wants to win...badly. More so than our saturated world of internet, radio and T.V. coverage will give him credit for. As fans that's what we should care about most and that's winning.

Can the sports world be a better place? sure it can. The ball however is in our court. We need to stop allowing the leagues to take advantage of us with start times later than our bed times. We need to stand up for our rights as fans. If owners will take our money to hear us scream in their arenas and stadiums, they can listen to us scream outside of them as well.

Cheating is cheating.......Just like breaking the law......the act is still illegal if it violates a law. However, it is so true....cheating by athletes has been around since time began/think about it....if you believe in Adam and Eve.....she was the first one who tried to cheat, course she was led to do it by that evil serpent.....nice post GAmbit

JOKER,
I guess it isn't until being caught. Thing is cheating is going nowhere. We have all cheated befor ouselves even if it's playing a competetive game of UNO with some friends.

I agree I'd rather not know but we do know in the back of our minds it happens.

Thx and you have a great one yourself mon'ami.

I am so fed up hearing cheating doesn't matter, because everyone does it. In the first place, I doubt it and secondly you can not expect the kids coming up today to have any respect for the game if we don't.

I realize there will always be people trying to find an advantage, but IMO we as fans should not just accept it as a fact of life. Interesting subject, nice job

aero,
It is a fact of life whether we accept it or not. Is it right? Not in anyway do I believe that it is. However I have come to understand that it happens and will continue to happen.

The saying that "Money is the root of all evil" isn't right. It's the love of money that is the root of all evil. That my friend has slick side been instilled in all of us. Sad that it is that way but there is no denying it is what it is.

thx for the compliment and thank you for your comment and opinion.

And now with the federal trial taking place of former coach Trevor Graham. The termites have come out of the woodworks to nail him. One his former track athletes Antonio Pettigrew has come out and stated that Graham supplied him with HGH as well as anabolic steroids during his career. Graham had trained the likes of Marion Jones, Tim Montgomery and for a while Justin Gatlin.
Now let's see if ther IOC are prepared to strip Pettigrew of his Olympic gold medal in the 4x400m relay ?

You can bet in Beijing there'll definitely be more to come !

Cancer has been around forever but I guess we should just accept it and stop looking for a cure.

Mikers...there is a misconception.............there is a cure...at least for a lot of the various cancers. Only problem is drug companies might not make any obscene profits if diseases are cured or curtailed.

Rampant',
Yeah I'm waiting to see what the outcome will be and what or should I say which athletes get caught up this time around. Happy Memorial day to you and yours as well.

Mikers,
First of all bad comparison on your part. Those two things do not even begin to relate to each other. Secondly Fuzz is right about the drug companies. That's a multi billion dollar bussiness, if you need me to explain it to you then you are hopeless my friend.

We know that there'll be more to come. As once the crabs start to rise from the bottom of barrel. Then all hell seems to brake loose.
But one of the things that empowers the situation with regard to the use of illecit use of steroids . Is the fact that the four major sport's bodies are tenuous to mete anything bordering on severe punishment. It's asinine to hear Selig state that they've now got the most stringent testing going. Nothing could be further from the truth.

See my two latest pieces within this forum. They're titled Bill Belichick Is Now In The Employ of The NSA !

I'll look forward to reading your comments as and when you're ready.
