DeAngelo Hall CB for the Atlanta Falcons wants to move to a new home. Well Mr. Hall how does New Orleans sound to you? It's a short trip and the best part is you will have an opportunity twice a season to stick it to the team you feel stabbed you in the back.
The New Orleans Saints are expected to choose a CB with the 10th overall pick in this Aprils draft. All signs show that they are eyeing South Florida CB Mike Jenkins. With Asante Samuels looking for something around 10 mill. this season, it's said the the Patriots are also eyeing Jenkins as well. Other Mock Drafts have the Saints who are in desperate need o####ood cover corner also giving much thought on Troy's Leodis McKelvin.
My opinion though is at 24, DeAngelo Hall is one of the top 5 CB's in the league. Giving up a first round pick and possibly a pick in the latter rounds might be a wise decision. Atleast you know what you are getting from Hall. There is always the possibility that a draftee will be a bust and we all know the Saints have certainly had their share of those.
New Orleans needs defensive help in a bad way. Free agent pick up from last season Jason David just isn't getting it done. That's not the only help the Saints need though. They could really use a big time MLB and after persuing Zach Thomas who decided to play close to home in Dallas, this makes the draft and free agency even more interesting for the fans.
You see there is this LB from USC named Keith Rivers who is versatile and can play both MLB and outside. If New Orleans doesn't make a move for Hall then I think this might be a smarter draft pick than any CB that could be available to them. That is if he is still there for them to choose. Also this could allow the Saints to maybe pick a CB in the second round, someone like LSU's Chevis Jackson. He has great size and strength for a CB and plays pretty smart.
Back to Asante Samuels if the Patriots do not resign him and let's say they pull of a trade for Hall, which would be good for them because he is as good if not better for less money. This would also allow the New Orleans Saints to persue Samuels whom they thought of just a year ago.
The next few weeks will be interesting to say the least. With the combine underway in Indy and the draft a little more than a month away. Lots of speculating will be going on. Things will start to clear up though as the weeks move on. I for one am anxious and ready for some football.
I commented on MidniteCowboy's post on DeAngelo Hall that maybe the price would be too steep for this guy and I'm not talking monetary. He strikes me as a loose cannon if things don't go just so he seems to complain and clubhouse chemistry is damned important... With one year left on his current deal it might get very pricey to hang on to him, especially if Samuel gets big bucks... I like the Saints and I'd like to see them stick to the draft...
Dwindy,
you make a very valid point and I respect that. The Saints however are possibly two key players away from being a Superbowl contender. Hall so happens to play that position the Saints need help. Now if they could get Samuel I would be all for that as well. I just think they would be better served with using that pick on a MLB like this Keith Rivers kid. Like I said as well they could use their second rounde pick to aquire a CB like Chevis Jackson who is a pretty good player. Thing is how long will the window of opportunity be opened for the Saints?
I hear ya on the window of opportunity... My poor Seahawks are about at the end of their rope and they've only gazed upon the promised land... I'd just hate to see this guy disrupt the team...
Yeah Seattle is a team that the window is closing fast on. I like the Seahawks to, always have since the Steve Largent days. You probably wasn't much of a fan of this guy but I used to for some strange reason like the QB for the Seahawks years ago I think his name was David Craig???
Good stuff, Gambit. Who told ya that the Saints would be interested in Leodis McKelvin? Huh? Yeah, that's what I thought. LOL! Just kidding!
Yeah, Keith Rivers would be an immediate impact player on that defense. I hadn't considered them going after him. The Draft is unpredictable, but I think you hit the nail right on the head. Their offense needs no help, defense = primary concern. I feel that the draft is gonna be a very positive day for the Saints.
Mike,
thx for dropping in, I got to give it to you buddy you called that one. I've seen three different mock drafts and all three are different as far as what they predict the Saints will do come draft day. Rival.com has them picking Rivers which is what I hope they do. Picking a CB in the first round can be risky especialy when you can get a good one in the second round.
nice post gambit....but personally i think the last thing our saints need is this guys attitude and ego on the team, he may be a top 5 corner but he is also a top 5 trouble maker i just dont theink payton will want any of that on his team
tigerpride,
Yeah after careful reanalysis of Hall I have to agree. I still stick by drafting Rivers over a CB in the first round though. thx for stopping in and commenting.
I have my Mock Draft saved in a Word Document, and I keep updating it when I see some changes being needed. Right now, I do have the Saints taking Rivers. For some reason (NBC!) I never got a chance to watch Rivers in action with the Trojans. It'll be interesting how well he transitions to the Pros.
Mike,
Here is some interesting news for you mike. Rumor is the Saints are the front runner to land Asante Samuels. That would allow the Saints to go ahead and pick Rivers in the first round. If that does happen man look out for them Bayou Boys within the next season or two. With an offense that is capable of doing the things they do and a defense that can cover in passing situations, they will be tough.
Indeed they will be. I heard that Tampa Bay is interested in him as well, and he's interested in Tampa. How cool would it be to see those two (Saints and Bucs) go into a bidding war for him? Just helps fuel the rivalry. Take care!
Mike,
Anywheres but Tampa please! But it wouls add fuel to the fire of the rivalry. That I agree with. I sure hope we get him or some other team besides a NFC South team.
Hoffman,
Thx but what did I win LOL! Not quite sure what you are talking about.
Personally i think that DeAngelo would not be a great addition to the Saints just because of his ego problems. I can tell you like this the saints need to spend their free agency money and their #1 draft pick on corners. suppose they sign Asante Samuel.....ok good for them now u have one side of the field covered now what about the other half........ i thought so. I personally have watched the combine and have big dreams of New Orleans taking Antonio Cromartie's cuz Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. If u havent seen him the kid can fly and doesnt drop too many passes that come his way. Worry about LB next year because after rivers nobody else except highsmith from LSU deserves to go in the first round. I know that this is just an opinion but it does kinda make sense if u think about it. Give the team something to build upon for next year. THe draft is supposed to be filled with LBs next year.
Bush2,
Yes that is your opinion and I am not going to say it's a bad one. I respect any mans opinion,it's your God givin right to have. Now I partialy agree with you on it. I for one have reavaluated the Hall scenario and agree. No guys with bad attitudes needs to be on thiis team. Let's say the Saints do get Samuels then the other side is ok with McKenzie. he may not be a complete shut down CB but he is pretty good. That would also allow us to move David to the nickel position at corner. Something he might be able to handle. As far as the Draft if the do get Samuels also I would rather get Rivers than any LB next season. He can play side to side and tackles real well. Also he can play any LB position on the fiels. Being versatile is a rare comodity. Thx for stopping in and you are welcome back anytime.
The perfect breakfast as I see it.
