Staking a claim for LSU at #2...
Nov 04, 2007 | 7:06AM | report this

After another great week of college football and another upset of a high ranked team, we are all awaiting the new BCS rankings. The question is After a stunning ( to Eagles fans mostly) loss by #2 ranked Boston College, who should take their place? Should it be LSU who came into lastnights game against Alabama ranked #3 in the BCS poll? What about Oregon who was ranked #5 and put a convincing beatdown on the #4 and undefeated ASU? Then there is the Kansas Jayhawks. Who is undefeated and headed towards a Big12 showdown with more than likely Oklahoma. Should they move into second in the BCS rankings? All these teams have a legitimate claim to the Spot. But let's look at LSU and my thoughts.

LSU beat a very good Crimson Tide team. Once again though they had to come from behind to win it. Is that what a championship team looks like? A lot of Tiger fans think so. They have a good argument also as to why LSU belongs at #2. No team in CFB this season has played and beat as many top 20 teams as did the Tigers. They loss just one of those games against Kentucky in 3 O.T. to lose the #1 ranking that they held. Some say the SEC is the toughest to play in. Hey I'm an SEC guy and don't buy into that ####. No matter the conference you still have to play and win your games. There are tough teams in every conference. Especialy in this years season, which may go down as one of the wackiest but greatest seasons in history. Then there are the ones who just can't figure out why LSU is even in this horse race. Those people say LSU is overated and that they get lucky. That's a lot of luck for one season if you ask me. I see them as a team that no matter how far down they are, like a true championship team they get the job done in the end.

I do not buy into the overated #### that is usualy slung by fans of teams that just do not know much of anything about football. No team who is in the top 5 at this time is overated. They are there because they belong and have showed that each and every week. If LSU is an overated team then we would have to make that same assumption last year about Florida and that they did not belong in the NC game. They was there and they won convincingly against a good OSU team. Oh wait! was it OSU that may have been overated? Like I said it's #### and people will say that as long as it's not their team there. OSU belonged there and looks poised to be there again this year.

Now like I said I am an SEC guy, and a Tiger fan as I am sure you can see. But I'm no fool and would be just that if I said that Oregon, Kansas, OU or some other team did not belong at #2. I'm neither an expert nor some dumb number crunching computer that I wish would catch a virus that it never is able to recover from. So with all that said this is how I see the polls this week. If I am wrong and my Tigers stay where they are or drop, I'll be man enough to say that the other team belongs. I will not be on others blogs slinging #### in their teams face. So let the chips fall where they may and I will still be yelling "Geaux Tigers" each and every week. They may not look like a champion to you, but to me they are just that.

#1- OSU

#2-LSU

#3Oregon

#4KANSAS

#5OU

LSU should be #2 in the AP, Coaches, and BCS Polls. Oregon might jump over them with their win against Arizona State. I'm hopeful the Bayou Bengals run the table for a shot at the NC. I always want to see a representative from the SEC in the NC game if possible.

Strange things happen with the computers, but I'll go along with you. Keep winning and you deserve a shot at it. LSU won a tough game against a good team on the road, did what you had to do.

Not at all impressed with LSU, calling Alabama a very good team is a bit of a stretch.

My top 5: 1 Ohio st

2 Kansas

3 Oregon

4 LSU

5 Oklahoma

54fulltiltfulltime, why would you not call Alabama a great team?

Look at their three losses: #6 Georgia, Florida State(Just beat BC), and #2 LSU.

None of their losses has been a blow out.

And no respect for LSU? LSU's one loss was in triple overtime, on the road, to a (ranked at the time)conference opponent.

Let's remember that LSU own's a win over the defending national champion. And that champion hails from the SEC.

I, for one, would like to see an Ohio State vs, LSU matchup in a bowl game.

Naturally, I'd hope it would be in the BCS title game. However if that doesn't work out, I'd love to see the Buckeyes get a shot at redemption vs the SEC.

THe SEC is STILL the best conference. And to BE the best, you must BEAT the best.

I don't think Oregon has a shot at the NC unless some teams start losing because they don't have a conf. championship to play. LSU would most likely play Georgia if both teams win out. Kansas could be undefeated if they beat Mizzou and OK but not likely. Mizzou or OK could either likely win the conf. championship with one loss. And since the PAC-10 teams haven't been staying in the polls (UCLA, CAL) it is unlikely the Oregon schedule will impress without the extra game like the SEC and Big 12.

LSU is going to get hated on because of these close games but it has played more top tier teams than anyone else. They had a brutal four game stretch that it finished 3-1.

It would be a tough pick between LSU and OK if they both won out.

Did you see Lisa has her very own commentary hosted by FOX Sports? Once again hating on LSU even though they keep winning. I guess fox has found its TOKEN female football fan and given her a forum even though she has no idea what the f she is talking about.

PS. Living in Ohio sucks. I can't wait to get out of here. These nutjobs can't accept that OSU got creamed by FL. Get over it.

now here we go again with the schedules again what are we as teams supose to do in midseason reschedule some more teams??? its not about wins or loss anymore its BS..... example some years ago oregon won the pac-10 and memory serves me right i think we were #2 in the nation ?? and who played for the title nebraska and miami??? the huskers didnt even win their confrerence!!!!!!!

OK lost the Big 12 Championship and still played LSU in the NC game instead of USC. Why? The polls had USC ahead of OK but the computers looked at the whole season. USC lost to a 5-6 Cal team while OK lost to a good KState team in an "extra" game.

Every conference should have the same format, either have a conf. championship game or not. Right now there is no consistency with how the NC game teams are chosen. Playing in a conf. championship can either make sure you get in or knock you out when you should have gone.

That is why the plus one game format is needed. Since these greedy jerks will never let us have any sort of a playoff, the top four teams should play in two bowls with the winners playing the next week for the NC. It always seems like the odd man out is the #3 team. This way, 3 and 4 will get play and anyone after that can cry.

Sadly, this may never happen because once we get four teams in, everyone will want to expand it to eight.

kellyscott,
I was not crying about LSU should be #2 but simply stateing the obvious. Also those are my opinions and whether LSU is there are not I will be behind them. I have no quarrel with Oregon being #2. If you read my post correctly I said all the top 5 have a legitamite argument to be there. Oregon is a great team. But I also just like cms lsu said think the Conference Championship game is what hurts the Pac-10 by not haveing one. It's an extra game that has to be taken into consideration.

Think about this. it wouldn't matter if one of the teams in a conference championship game had a bunch of losses. They will come to play and play their hearts out. If only to say we are atleast Conference Champs. So a team who is in the top 3-4 and has a Conf. Champ. game that they won has to be given that lil extra. It's a no brainer.

cms lsu,

I was in Lisa's live blog lastnight. Believe me she does know about football. your opinion of her is yours to have, I respect that. I know she is no LSU fan and it's mostly because she hates Les Miles. That is her right to do so. All of us are guilty of homerism and she is just the same. The one thing is this. She is my friend, no matter where her allegience may lay at. Thx for stopping in and commenting and you are welcome back anytime.

What other team other than LSU has played as many top 25 opponents this year? Kansas-no, Ducks-no, OSU-no. It's not about winning those patsy games, it's quality games. Just ask an Auburn fan.

This late in the season, it's time to give credit to the undefeated teams and rank them high...if they're from a major conference and have actually played a top 40 team. Sorry Hawaii.

1) OSU undefeated
2) Kansas undefeated
3) LSU great schedule of ranked opponents in the sec
4) Oklahoma
5) Oregon

3 to 5 can fight all they want about who is better.
OSU and Kansas are undefeated. Give them both credit for that.

None of these teams are my team, so my bias should be less than a fan of any of these top teams.

Gambitxxxx, I see what you mean and I agree with you. I actually think Oregon is playing so well right now that I would put them at No#1. But because of the losses, they won't go higher than 2. LSU belongs as d Kasas and Oklahoma.

Oregon should be #2. Oregon dominated ASU. LSU had to come from behind and had a couple of plays go their way. They should have lost.

I'll explain it to you like his. If LSU was #5 and they played and beat an undefeated Bama team that was #4, would you think that they should jump a #3 Oregon team that just slid by a suspect #17 Arizona State after the #2 was beaten? Of course you would, me too! Put the shoe on the other foot and you would be singing a different tune. Oregon deserves to be the #2 right now but the season is far from over so I wouldnt get too wrapped around the axle about it just yet.

The Bucks need to take care of businees against Illinois and Michigan. LSU better pray that Georgia runs the table on Auburn and Kentucky (Ga Tech dont count) because you dont want to see those Gators on a neutral field. Auburn owes Georgia from that whippin they took last year. Kentucky beat the Dawgs last year and the UGA secondary is worse this year. Good Luck Gambit.

I am a ravid BC fan, and it was like a knife to the hart to see them lose the other night. But I have to admit, they really had not faced a great program other than Notre Dame (who I do not feel like talking about at this instant). Although FSU may not have been the greatest team, their program is still respected and I personally think that alone was able yo make my boys cringe. (Again, I am leaving Notre Dame out of this discussion.) Anyway, to have your only nationally recognized player (Matt Ryan) have an mediocre, if not bad game, and you not having a chance, there is no way in heck you should even get your name put next to OSU, even if you are undefeated. I truly am not surprised at this loss, but I do beleive that Matt Ryan will show up the next couple of weeks and carry this team on his back to the ACC Championship, and possibly even to a major bowl game.

loanumoney- Thx for stopping in to comment. Yes they must play better or they will lose again soon.

slshusker- I agree with giving the undefeateds credit But Kansas would have to prove more to me than beating up on a weak conference. If they win the Big 12 Title and are still undefeated then yes they deserve to play for the NC

Marty, good to see you my friend. There is no doubt in my mind OSU is the best team out in college football at this point. Yes everyone after them has a legit argument. I just see no argument stronger than LSU's. It's not about how many points you win by but that you win period.

goblue- Thx for commenting and though I respect your comment I have to say LSU overcame alot of adversity in that game. A win is a win. Since people like to call teams overrated maybe ASU was just that. Or maybe it's still the PAC-1 only this year it's a new team.

BUCKEYEZZ- I don't think LSU is worried about who they play in the SEC Title game. Only thing they need to worry about is finishing the rest of the regular schedule out with wins. Also your lil scenario is ####. I would not expect LSU to jump unless they played the same amount of top 20 teams they have played and beaten this year. Did you even read my blog or did you already have a pre-planned comment?

ed, thx but I hope your wrong

Mike- lmao I agree

Patsfan- It happens. I felt the same way when LSU lost to kentucky. I have BC somewhere around 6-7. Matt Ryan has a bright future ahead of him in the NFL.

Kansas has the weakest schedule in the pack. 78th. This means 77 teams including LSU (8th) have been more challenged than Kansas. Since it's all mythical anyway, common sense should tell you Kansas does not deserve a shot. What do Les Miles, Urban Mayer, Nick Saban, Steve Spurrier, Tommy Tuberville, Mark Reicht, Phillip Fulmer, Houston Nutt have in common? A hard schedule filled with great programs and coaches. Kansas is no match and would likely lose to any of these schools. Really, ask an odds maker! Kansas would be an underdog to all. Is that what we want-an underdog in the BCS. LSU is a powerhouse from a powerhouse conference, that is why it has the No. 2 powerhouse rank. It will likely end with the No. 1 rank. LSU is THE most exciting team in America with the most top 20 teams on their schedule...and there is more to come.

The more things change the more they remain the same. That's the only constant we're seeing this Bowl season. One'd now expect the Buckeyes now to implode and real place the cat amongst the pidgeons once and for all. But as of now that appears unlikely to happen.
I see the Irish and Cornhuskers had their as*es proverbially smacked over the weekend ? Wies and Callahan really have their work cut for them for the rest of the season.

Lifelong Bama fan.....congats LSU.

Now.... I predicted last years game and the outcome with 100% accuracy. Even the ineffectiveness of the Heisman trophy winner in the game.

It will be OSU and LSU in the big show. And even without a Heisman OSU will put on a better show than the pathetic 'what are we even doing here' showing of last year. It will be a good game but they will lose again.

Tigers will get their 2nd BCS in 5yrs and folks will hate the SEC even more. Oh well.

hey lakeviewman u are an #### ko has 2 and 3 star athlets and lsu and ohio state have 4 and 5 star athletes. that doesnt mak them any better that means their tradition is a lot richer than ku. just because u play a harder schedule doesnt mean u are better every week ku is playing more high school americans ad veteran players than they have. wake u and realize ku is ing with this heart and discipline. this is what makes a champion i watched dorsey saturday nd his bad leg is a joke he is fine just wants more draft money believe me the term "heart of a champion" tells the ku season as they have done this with no name players. i hope we play lsu in the title game and yhen we will see. have a great day and i hope dorseys pimple heals fast

I will say this and that is Oregon could make a good arguement for #2. Kansas I canot say the same thing beause of thier oppenents records 33-43 (does not inlcude Southeastern Louisiana). The quality wins Kansas has is K-State and that is it.

You could make an arguement for OU but the colorado loss puts a bit of tarnish on it.

Bottom line is LSU has to win out and be convincing with Tech, Ole Miss and Arkansas then the SEC championship game. If thye continue to do the #### thye are doing and Oregon blows people out then the voters will lean toward Oregon its that simple.

LSU is a deseved #2 now for reasons mentioned above. HOWEVER, it ain't over yet. We'll have to deal with Mcfadden and the improving hogs, then the sec east champ on dec.1. Things will take care of themselves. IF KU REMAINS undefeated thru Okie State,Mizzou, then OU, they obviously, as an undefeated major conference champ, they'll deserve #1 or #2. We'll move over and watch.I don't thinks that's going to happen. We'll see how it all pans out.
