On sunday USC was replaced by LSU as the #1 team on the AP poll but does it even matter... not at all. The AP poll isn't even used to determine who plays who for the National Championship game. All it does is provide College football fans with a reason to smack talk. What will matter is, this weekends game between LSU and Florida. If the Gators win how far do they move to get back in the hunt to possibly defend their NC title? If USC struggles this weekend and CAL. destroys it's opponent do they move ahead to the #1 or #2 spot in the polls? Also if all three top teams LSU, USC and CAL are upset where does S. Fla. fit in all this? those are the questions that I am waiting to see answerd and this weekends games couldn't come soon enough. Every year the College football season is more and more exciting. It's great for the game to see teams such as USF come out of nowhere and shock everyone. Kentucky is another team who has come out of nowhere it seems. Usualy only known for it's Basketball program Kentucky is off to a great start and is climbing in the polls and on the hunt for a birth in the SEC title game. They still have some tough games ahead of them with LSU and Fla still yet to play. I will actualy give them the nod against Fla. but think it will be tough for them to beat LSU and it's vaunted Defense. Nevertheless the whole State of Kentucky is behind them and we all know how passionate sports fans they are when it comes to thier Wildcats. Thing is I am assuming alot will and can happen here, we'll just have to wait and see. Everyone has a shot ,even the 1 loss teams. So fans of your favorite team keep rooting for them.It promises to be a wild ride the next couple of weeks as we will see teams seperate themselves from the rest of the pack. Let's forget about strength of schedule, which conference is stonger or any meaningless polls that have thier opinions on things. What matters most is winning. Win and win convincingly, that is the name of the game. For the same reason until your favorite team beats another top 5 team let's stop all the smack talk about who is better. If you just so happen to not have a top 5 team on the rest of your schedule, well then beat who you have and beat them like they stole from you. That doesn't mean running up the score on some sorry #### team. It means to just dominate in all facets of the game. So to fans of those teams that find themselves sniffing at the door of a National Championship game goodluck the rest of the way. Also to those fans that think your out of it with one loss, don't give up. There is still some games to be played that will possibly change the way things seem at this moment. That's the beauty of college football, almost everyone has a chance to be called the best that year.
hey its like the old worn-out saying (YOU CANT WIN IT ON PAPER) in this day and age anouther worn-out (DAY AND AGE)?? anyway you can be #1 for a week then drop like USC did to #2....so yea ratings mean nothing (UPSETS) happen!!!!
Great post, Gambit. Dontcha just love college football!
I hope for four things:
1. Everybody enjoys watching and rooting for their teams- win or lose.
2. Keeping the athletes injury free.
3. That the players have the good sense to remember that they are among the forefront in representing their schools and to stay out of trouble with the law.
4. Oh, did I mention? Last but certainly not least... LSU wins all its games!
AustinTXTiger- thx for stopping by and thx for the compliment. I agree with you on all those points. Your #3 is dead on they need to remember that they not only embarrass themselves but also thier family and school when they make mistakes. I believe in second chances though I also believe in being held responsible and being punished for ones actions. And about #4 yeah I agree 100%
Ah hell, we need both polls. The coaches are famous for having an assistant coach fill out the ballot. A time or two, the coaches have forgotten to 'fax it' in time.
I don't trust the media either. They get on their media darling high horse and prop up teams, due to pre-season rankings and never drop them down; they'd be seen as wrong.
Two polls ain't so bad. Sometimes at season's end, two teams claim the Championship. Been there.
The AP is always important, unless there was a BCS rule change I was aware of?
True, preseason polls ruin college football. For the obvious reason. But this year, with the one loss teams that are really really good, there will be more debate than ever! Can't wait to hear the OU faithful, Fla. faithful, WVU faithful, and possibly the LSU, OSU, USC, USF faithful crying out for their teams in the BCS final rankings.
Remember the fun we had last year with Florida and Michigan? That went on for, uhhhh, days and nights.
i think the polls are necessary.... all of em... they do provide information on teams i might not normally look for or watch....regardless of whether or not how much real vs alledged bias there is in the polls.....
the bias on the west coast is that all the sports writers from the east are biased vs the west coast teams... yet on here i see all lot of people from the east, south , and midwest think usc is the darling of the pollsters due to all those west coast sports writers tilting the polls...
most the time i think the pollsters get better each week at the rankings and are trying to stay in the ball park at least about who should be ranked on play for that week and season to date... i.e., one of the top five is probably number one and one of the top five is probably number two... and if ur in the top 15 u at least are worthy of being in the top 25....
they provide a starting point for all the fun trash talking in here....
i remember one year ohio state started out number 13 in the preason polls and ran the table and took the national championship when no one thought they would be better than maybe 8-2 and go to a bowl... that was back when osu played a 10 schedule when everyone was up to eleven games....

AP ,USA Today polls aren't worth the paper they're written on if there's a major upset.
The only reaaon it's done this way is making sure that they've got a money making machine in terms of the publicity they attain.
