Well It looks as though the New Orleans Saints are on the fast track to get the first pick in next years draft. And with that pick it's obvious that it definatly will not be an easy choice. The Saints are in need of improvement in so many areas it's hard to put a finger on which is more important. The offensive line looks like it never played a down of football in it's life. Drew Brees stayed under pressure the entire game. Not to mention they couldn't open a hole for Reggie Bush with the exception of the one touchdown run up the middle. In three games now the O-line has looked worse than a pop warner team. I've seen better blocking in a game of backyard football. It's time for these guys to be taught what it's like to see the game from the sideline. Not even Jamal Brown who since he was drafted by the Saints has played rather good, but so far this season hasn't played up to his capabilities. So is this the position to be looking to fill with the first pick? Well lets examine the other many areas of problems with this bunch of losers. Reggie Bush is not an every down back and with Deuce hurting Sean Peyton decides to use Aarron Stecker as the other back in the scheme and I ask why? Stecker is no power house back himself but instead relys on speed to do what he can. The Saints had two RB's during preseason. Pierre Thomas made the team with some strong runs and a will to win. He's a more complete back than Stecker so why not give him an opertunity to play. Seems as though nothing else is working so could it realy hurt? With the exception of Marquis Colston there is nobody on this teams offense playing worth a damn. Now moveing on the other side of the ball the Defensive line and Linebackers are just not getting anything done. Poor tackling and not being able to cover on short underneath passing plays has hurt them. These positions are big areas of concern. So do the Saints go here to fill a void with their first pick? And now we get to probably the worst part of this team (at least in my opinion) the secondary. Corner Jason David has taken a lot of heat over these past couple weeks but last night he was the lone bright spot on Defense with an interception after Brees just threw one previous to that. For all the flack he has taken he does have in three games a forced fumble and recovery for a TD and an interception. I still think he is better suited in the nickel package. Maybe it's time for the Saints to take a look back at this years draft and really question why they did not choose a top notch CB instead of choosing a WR who hasn't done anything but sit on the sideline and wish he had been drafted later in the first round. Is this where the Saints go this year with it's first pick? Whatever they decide it's time to start evaluating what might be available this comeing year. So I pose a question to everyone who reads this blog, what should they be looking at to fill first? I know it's to early to tell where they'll fall in the draft but from the looks of things it'll more than likely be with in the top 10 picks. I'm looking foward to your thoughts on this sore subject.
FIRST OF ALL I'M A SAINTS FAN WIN OR LOSE..AND TO THE COMMENT...YES DEUCE IS HURT...REGGIE WILL EVENTULLY BECOME THE FEATURED BACK..RATHER IT BE CATCHING OR RUNNING...AS FAR AS AARON STECKER...NOTHING...I MISS JOE HORN..WHO...HE'S WITH THE WINLESS FALCONS...GO SAINTS
As both of our teams are off to starts that leave much to be desired, i think something we have grown to appreciate is how important an offensive line is to a team's overall success. So many of the supposed "stud" runningbacks have been off to tough starts and offensive lines are shouldering much of the blame. It really makes you wonder if some running backs are that good or is it really all about the offensive line? Clearly, there are running backs that are more talented than others, like L.T., L.J. and Steven Jackson. But is the gap between those guys and the rest of the runnningbacks really as big as previously percieved?
Back to the Saints, if Deuce is really outfor the season, landing a top pick is not out of the question. Is Reggie Bush an NFL running back? Is it possible that he would be at his best exclusively at the wide reciever position with a couple of runs and trick plays drawn up for him here and there?
As far as who they should chose in the first round in the coming draft, it really depends on what personel decisions the Saints make before the draft. If they trade/let go of Deuce, there should be some quality running backs to chose from with a "lottery" pick. They could also address their offensive line problems or draft a reciever. But they would probably be best served getting some defensive weapns, perhaps ponying up for say, Lance Briggs. He could really help any defense and coming form a guy who watches him every week, he is possibly just as good as Brian Urlacher, If not, he certainly isnt too far behind.
The thing with both the Bears and the Saints

is that both temas have more than just a few issues that need to be addressed. On offense, the Bears need a quarterback, perhaps a runningback, a reciever to complement Bernard Berrian and and some youger offensive lineman, specifically to replace the incompetent Fred Miller.
On defense they dont need much besides for a safety to replace Adam Archuletta, who looked lost against Dallas. For a guy with the reputation he has, he certainly missed an awful lot of tackles. The Bears will most likely lose Lance Briggs, that is unless Jerry Angelo gives him the money that he deserves. But even if he leaves, the Bears have a solid replacement waiting in the wings, jamar Williams. The coaches love the kid and hopefully he will perform when called on, perhaps this coming week against Detroit(Lance left the game at halftime. The extent of the injury is unknown.)
The Saints, also have a number of needs. Again, a running back may be needed, depending on what happens with Deuce. Also, their recieving core looks pretty bad and unless Meachem is the answer, they may need to hit free agency for a reciever as well. Their offensive line also needs some serious help.
Unlike the Bears, the Saints will need to do some serious work with their defense in the offseason. There really isnt much that on that defense, aside form a couple of decent defensive linemen.
I realize that in the NFL, it is virtually impossible to put together a team with no weaknesses, unless you are the Patriots, who may go down as one of the best teams n history when its all said and done. Neither the Bears or the Saint
chitown I don't think there is that big a gap between the elite backs and lets say Deuce McCallister for instance. In my opinion it is the line for the Saints on offense. Not only can they not open up holes to run but they can't keep pressure off of Brees. It takes more than 3 seconds for a reciever to run his pattern and get him the ball. did you see how easily vander Bosch was slicing through their line lastnight. As for Deuces injury it's not season ending more like soarness or bruise. X-ray was negative on ligament damage. Now Lance Briggs I would love to have but I doubt Deuce goes anywhere this upcomeing season. Also in the draft i'm just dumbfounded on what they should do except no WR is needed I think they could address that in Free agancy. Maybe you could tell me what good CB's are out there or LB's. Although I wouldn't mind them getting DT Glenn Dorsey from LSU he's a monster.
s will be able to address all of their needs in just offseason. What we can hope for is that both teams' maagements and coaching staffs will properly assess their personel, decide which needs are more pressing than others and make the right moves to fill those holes.
I think that the Bears biggest needs are at QB, SS and offensive line position. The wide recievers, runningbacks and linebackers will be fine if they can solidify themselves at the three aforementioned positions.
Looking at the Saints, i think the following, which may sound a bit extreme at first, would be a good idea. Invest a ton in their offense. They have a great quarterback, a dynamic rb/wr and a few decent, young recievers. Their best chance would be to try and build their team in the Colts' form, i.e a monstrous offense with a defense that if performing properly, can be enough to get them to the big game. I say that because if the Saints try to do some work on offense and some on defense, they will improve on both sides of the ball, but probably not enough on either side to be a real contendor. They could be kind of like the Cowboys, a team with an excellent offense and a not so good defense, but just good enough to get by. I just feel that there are too many needs on both sides of the ball and that going towards one extreme would not be that bad of an idea.

gambit...man I was ticked watching the game. NO blocking! Geez...Bush looks like he's beefed up, he can be a featured back and he will take 30 possessions if that's what it takes. I still think the Saints have a good season...the entire NFC sucks right now, so at least they have a good chance of making the playoffs...maybe?
radiersgreatestfan- yeah i wouldn't want any fan to be dealing with this kind of bull. glad to see the raiders get a win.
LISAH- I was so mad by the end of the game I just couldn't believe it. I've never seen such a #### poor O-Line since... well since last years Raiders. Sorry raiders fans.
New Orleans will probably win more games than the falcons. The Browns are 1-2 right?? ohh they won one game. Remember there are still 13 Regular Season Games left.
The Saints are bad right now but they play in a division with carolina ( who allowed 20 points against the falcons) and the Falcons......
Tampa is playing good now but who knows what will happen down the stretch. Teams go through 0-4 , 0-5 stretches down the season as well. Cadillac is bruised up. Garcia is a great QB!!!
(P.S. the colts and titans are very good playoff AFC teams who played the saints , [titans will get to the playoffs as a wildcard] )
Bush can be a feature back , his workouts are insane in his off season conditioning. But just jump on the bandwagon like every other sports-writer! (way to regurgitate sports announcers information about David and the nickel back /Bush not a feature back etc..) No back can be a feature back the way New Orleans O Line Played sunday.
Fujita is a good linebacker he made some good plays.
and you might want to rethink your magical number 1 pick overall.... with the browns, raiders, rams, falcons are on their way to the #1 pick as well...
it's to early in the season to close the book but i guess you are just hopping off the saints bandwagon. It's ok the cowboys are good this year you can fly over to texas and get a warm welcome!
Oh yeah the cowboys got an O-Lineman in Free Agency.Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. You don't necesarily have to draft a lineman in the first round to say the least. Faneca might be available next year.
jnava121- First of all I would never jump off the saints bandwagon been riding to long I've become one with it. Secondly I do not know what you mean by this statement- But just jump on the bandwagon like every other sports-writer! (way to regurgitate sports announcers information about David and the nickel back /Bush not a feature back etc..)
Thirdly never said the Saints would get the first pick just said they are headed that way very fast.
As a Cowboys fan I hope the saints can pull themselves together just enought to have a decent season and better record than the Browns. Then we can get either another CB, safety or a little younger at WR. I would like for Roy Willimans to be moved from safety to LB since he only is worried about laying licks and not wrapping up. He is horrid as a pass defender and would be better suited covering a FB out of the backfield or maybe a TE. Hopefully we can have a great year and be able to draft the best avaliable talent no matter what. Get it together Saints and if nothing else, do better than the Browns.
Hahahaha! This is funny. The Saints are again stinking up the cellar of the NFL. I just read an article that used the same language I used in responding to the preseason power rankings. Namely, "the clock has struck midnight" on their cinderella story. They will be the laughing stock of the NFL again soon, and things will be back to normal.
WR may not have been the biggest need, but the Saints will be glad that they have Robert Meachem when he gets in the game. He has the tools to take a game over.
KDXR- As long as the cards and Lions are in this leauge you are wrong.
gunslinger77- I fail to see what he has so far. when put in the game during pre-season he did nothing. only reason he made the team is he was a #1 pick for them and it would have made them look stupid if they had cut him.
i hate to burst evryone's bubble, but reggie bust is not going to be a feature back! this isn't college anymore Reggie! you cant out run everyone now, your playing with the big boys. you have shown me last year and the begining of this year that you are nothing more than jitter bug outside runner who is not tough enough to get in between the tackles for the tough yards....he has to be the most overhyped player in the NFL.
what would really through me off is if they traded duece at the end of the season for a early pick and had a low pick already. wait that can't happen deuce is out for the season and will not be back till pre-season if that. were screwed... nuff said
1st overall pick in the 2008 NFL draft will go to Bills or Dolphins you watch. And If I'm either team I trade that number 1 overall pick and try and get as many possible upper tier picks as possible, some teams may be itching for Brian Brohm QB, Louisville, Darren Mcfadden RB Arkansas, or Jake Long OT Michigan, so realistically you could get 3 solid picks for a number 1 overall, and trust me even though the Bills have some serious young talent in Lee Evans, Paul Poluzuny, Donte Whitner, Marshawn ####, Jason Peters etc.. you can never be too deep or too talented. Miami On the other hand is even much more desperate for youth, as age is about to corrode that Defense. Trading down from #1, could land you a game changing safety like Kenny Phillips from Miami, and an additional late 2nd rounder, and potential 4th rounder, once again all depending on how much teams are willing to give up for that sexy #1 pick. If I'm Miami I trust Beck at Qb in the future, they have nothing to lose, and desperately need some young talent on D, and a serious upgrade on their o-line.
If the Saints go top 5, we should get Glenn Dorsey from LSU. The D-line has been abused so far this year. 2nd and 3rd round should go to LB and CB. Shoot the saints should go defense throughout the draft..........
Saints turn their season and get to pick at da bottom of da 1st round! Ya gotta believe in something! Decent OL in da free agent market are hard to come by, really good ones are even harder to land! If Thomas doesn't pan out, go for a RB. As much as I like Reggie, do not really see him as an every down RB. Otherwise get a LB. GEAUX Saints!!!!!!!!!
I'm a 33 yr old guy who has been a big fan of sports most my life. I love sports from in and around my city of New orleans. I am also a huge L.A. Laker fan, been so since i was a kid and saw magic play. Love my LSU fighting tigers and hopeing for another National Championship this year. Geaux tigers!!!
