STEELERS HAVE A DOUBLE STANDARD??? I THINK NOT!!!
Mar 22, 2008 | 4:05PM | report this

BEFORE ANYONE GETS THEIR PANTS ALL UP IN A #### OVER THIS, I SAY THIS: I DO NOT CONDONE, NOR EVER DID CONDONE NOR WILL EVER CONDONE DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, PHYSICAL VIOLENCE, BY EITHER PARTY IN A "SPOUSAL TYPE" RELATIONSHIP. BY THAT I MEAN "STRAIGHT" RELATIONSHIPS, SAME SEX RELATIONSHIPS OR WHATEVER KIND OF RELATIONSHIP ONE HAPPENS TO BE IN.

That said, I offer this OPINION for your perusal: The Steelers did not operate on a DOUBLE STANDARD when they fired Cedric Wilson recently, while retaining James Harrison. Not that it matters, but Harrison's incident occured prior to this latest "gaffe" by Wilson. No one knows what the Steeler organization whould have done, had Harrison involved himself in a domestic violence incident AFTER Wilson's latest involvement in one.

Wilson was involved in a domestic dispute that turned violent previously; this incident led to his girlfriend firing a weapon inside Wilson's residence, Wilson was not there, and an 11 or 12 hour standoff with the police. She is still facing charges for weapons violations. One can surmise that Wilson did SOMETHING that led to all this incident entailed, nothing is ever just one's persons fault all the time. The entire matter was dutifully handled by the police, evidence and statements gathered, charges filed. The entire incident was reported thoroughly by the various medias. Wilson did not get fired; he was put on notice by the Steeler organization not to involve himself in a situation such as this again.

Wilson was given a SECOND CHANCE! He apologized, filed a "Protection from Abuse" petition, that was granted. The Steelers gave him that precious SECOND CHANCE, and what did he do? He went to an eatery where his estranged girlfriend sat at the bar, hit her on her shoulder AND AS SHE TURNED AROUND, punched her in the face. Reports indicated that he immedilately left the establishment and was later taken into custody by police officials. Witnesses at the scene reported that they saw the assault and that it was unprovoked. BOTTOM LINE:  Wilson had been given that precious SECOND CHANCE and blew it by seeking out his estranged girlfriend and punched her while in public. As a side note the woman is now claiming Wilson did not punch her.

NOW, remember, Wilson was given that SECOND CHANCE, was he not? He did not take advantage of it, did he? So, he is gone. Now people are saying by not cutting Harrison, this is a double standard. How so?? Wilson was given a SECOND CHANCE, was he not? Why deny that same SECOND CHANCE to Harrison?? Would it be fair to offer Wilson something and not Harrison? Again, I think not. Maybe neither deserved a SECOND CHANCE, but one was granted one; I think the other (Harrison) should be offered that same SECOND CHANCE!! Harrison has been put on notice, he is getting that SECOND CHANCE, I think it is only fair to do so.

AGAIN, I REPEAT, I DO NOT, DID NOT, NOR WILL I, CONDONE PHYSICAL DOMESTIC VIOLENCE BY EITHER OF THE SEXES.

Fuzz I agree with you 3 strikes and your out get rid of him..good post!!!

B@o "im not comdoning spousel abuse" I mean give the other guy the same as the first after so many warnings there gone for whatever reason- in "MY" oppinion they shouldnt be givin that many chances but thats them not "ME" but if "THEY" are giving someone 3 chances do the same for the other..otherwise it then would be a double standard..

fuzz, i understand your point when it comes to the steeler brass and having to keep the rules the same for each player. i think if this keeps popping up as it did with randy moss around the time of the super bowl, commisioner goodel will get involved. i dont think he can let the perception of the nfl become one that the nfl is soft on wife beating. and i think joker is already hittin the sauce, hes willing to give 3 strikes on spousal abuse??

JW! Thanks for the read. Nothing is ever "fair" as I have said, but think you can't do for one and not the other, Has got me in hot water time to time, but I have always lived by it, or have made every attempt to do so. Thanx for the props. Fuzz

B@O! Thanks for reading. I appreciate it, lot of bad feelings abound cause some feel it was/is a double standard. It stirred a lot of controversy.
I didn't hear anything 'bout Moss, same stuff?? Fuzz

I agree with you. I just spoke about this yesterday on someone else's blog.

I believe the Steelers are being CONSISTANT with their approach in dealing with player problems.
Someone also mentioned Davenport while discussing this topic. Najeh's problems BEFORE he arrived here are well documented and I gaurantee if they return, he will not.

Most of the negative comments about this situation have been of the typical one line hit and run type from the "fans" that go a little over board in support of their teams.

Good points, I still think that Harrison ought to be cut, if not, then at least be told he's on thin ice.

Take care, fuzzboss! Happy Easter! BTW, make sure tou check out this post sometime next week about my reaction to Billy Crystal playing for the Yankees. A little late, but I've a good idea about it. See ya!

Sixfigure! Thanks for coming by for a read. I truly hope they are being consistent. That has been their history starting with "The Chief" Maybe that is why all the negatives, for they have always been on the "up and up" Lot of controversy over this; would have been solved had Dan Rooney not said anything, but again, not their way to do things in secret. You can bet though we'll get a lot of heat if Harrison screws up, even if they would cut him over it. Fuzz

Greenspire! Mike, thanks for coming by. We agree to disagree about the second chance. I wonder if Harrisons "gaffe" would have occured right after this one with Wilson what would be taking place. As you know my life revolved around "resolving" disputes such as these, never pleasant nor really resolved.
Have a Happy Easter also. Will watch for the post, Fuzz BTW: Think he was placed on notice too.

I can't tell you which Steeler is a greater lowlife.
One assaulted a woman in public, with witnesses.
The second broke down a bathroom door and admitted to slapping around his girlfriend. He completely cornered her and terrorized her. If she had a handgun, Harrison would be toast.

Both stink. Cut both.

I'd love to know the stats on NFL player domestic violence vs. the public.

Sis! Thanks for the visit! I wouldn't go that far. Sheet always happens, that's why I had a job for over 35 years, and believe me I have seen it all! They didn't cut Wilson first, so..... Problem is one issue has nothing to do with the other. Violence is what they do, what "we pay" to see them do to each other, we glorify it; cheer on boxers, wrestlers etc., etc., so........ What got me was he broke thru a bedroom door, took the cell phone (snapped it in half). But, he only slapped once. Anger breeds anger, I've seen it in myself, as well as others. The more one yells and screams and gets yelled and screamed at the angrier one gets; it is human nature. Right or wrong, it occurs. Fuzz

What ever happened to Moss and that girl who was raising hel! right before the Superbowl? Just curious--Your right Fuzz and like Husker, I wonder how the #s are compared to the rest of the world with Pro players in general----The Rams cut one last year for beating a woman and they dont have anybody hardly to cut. Good Post!!!

Cboy! Thank you for your visit. I forgot to address that issue with Husker; thanks for bringing it up. From my experience, tried and true, it is all relative. Ten percent, ten percent of everything is just no damn good!! Per Capita it is all the same. The murder rates in one city can be compared to another by population, same with domestic violence, whatever occurs in the populace is also reflected, per capita, in select groups.
That's my story, thanks for the props. Fuzz

Good question about Moss. While this is purely speculation, I did notice that within a few days after Moss signed that nice contract with the Pats, she dropped the charges.

Hi Fuzz!

Can't argue one bit with this one.

The key is consistency. What's good for the goose is good for the gander, so to speak. If Big Ben was involved in such a thing, I believe the Steelers' management would follow through and discharge their star QB as well. This is the lesson that a lot of other NFL owners and their management philosophies need to take into account. These young men have an obligation to the public, their teams, etc. to represent themselves in a positive manner and if they don't, with the understanding that the first transgression results in a warning, they should be gone. Stick to that regulation and we'll be hearing less of this type of conduct!

Thanks Fuzz!

Fuzz:

Domestic violence of any kind is just not right. What kind of man is these football players that beat up on women. Not much in my opinion.

Yep. They should get the ax. What kind of message is this sending to the kids that worship these guys as football stars..

My take...the g/f has a certain amount of time to file a complaint....let's see if she get some sort of reward from Wilson to not file charges. By the way..nice post and I agree with the Harrison position of getting second chance, if only because Wilson did. With that being said, they both will get cut...abusers rarely ever change. Why not be proactive? It may save a life.

Every organization handles these legal situations different.

Take for instance the St. Louis Rams. After a drunken birthday in 1998, Leonard Little crashed into and killed another motorist, Susan Gutweiler in St. Louis, MO., leaving her children motherless. When tested, Littles blood alcohol level measured 0.19 percent, a level that exceeds the statutory level of intoxication of 0.08 in the state of Missouri. Little received 90 days in jail, four years probation and 1000 hours of community service. But he remained on the Rams roster.

Six years later, Little was again arrested for drunk driving and speeding. The probable cause statement filed by police said Little had bloodshot and watery eyes, smelled of alcohol and failed three sobriety tests. Because of Little's 1999 guilty plea to involuntary manslaughter in a drunken-driving crash prosecutors charged him as a persistent offender, making the case a felony. Little was acquitted of driving while intoxicated, but was convicted only of the misdemeanor speeding charge.

Little, as many of you probably know, is still playing for the Rams.

I don't condone what Mike Vick did either, but WOW, the NFL itself needs to step in and show some consistancy. And I'm sure that wouldn't go well with the teams owners. But hay, someones gotta stop these guys from getting away with all this.

Lisa H made a great post about my U of Washington Huskies and all the junk that football team use to get away with.

At least the Steelers Org. has some dignity towards these things.

Good reading fuzz.

Of course they do Fuzz, and I have no problem with it. As far as we know, this is Harrison's first scrape with this, and like you I don't condone his actions at all. But this is Wilson's second go-around, and I am willing to think the Steelers gave him an ultamatium of do it again and your gone. Silverback #### up for sure, and I think he will learn his lesson. But to think that the Steelers cut Wilson because he is average and didn't cut Harrison because he is a Pro Bowl linebacker is more then obvious. I don't think Wilson earned any friends with his constant complaining for the ball either.

Maybe the NFL uses cuziffers *Give-0-####-0-Meter to decide what is and isn't a useful product.........If the public opinion is that they could care less. Then maybe a coward/mocho man (wife/girlfriend beater) might just get to slide, given the right team and the right amount of lack of publicity.

But then again the Rooney family normally doesn't put up with that much #### anyway!

* cuziffers Give-0-####-0-Meter is a trademark of cuziffer and it's use was only to make a point on how little or how much public opinion it takes to get professional organizations to address an issue.

Happy Easter!..........................EQ

Late yesterday, the news wires were scrolling: "Wilson's girlfriend says he did not hit her in the bar."
Nope, he hit her in the head.

Dwindy! Thanks for stopping by. To be sure, I think ALL in the public eye should act not to bring discredit upon themselves first and foremost. For some reason we place those who are in the public eye on a pedestal, WRONGLY SO, and when they fall from grace we get ourselves bent out of shape over it. We fail to see that they are just as human as the rest of us with all the foibles and flaws of the human race; they just have certain talents that no one else possess, be they athletes, politicians or discoverers of "magical" cures for ailments. Ah, another idea for me! You touched on excellent points; thanks. Steelers do not long suffer the ills of miscreants, on or off the field. Fuzz

Photo!! Thanks for reading. I agree with you. But.... read my response to Dwindy: Why do we put these persons on a pedestal? We forget that they are human after all and possess ALL the human flaws and frailities of the human race. That DOES NOT excuse them, however, from bad behavior! They should comport themselves so as not to bring discredit upon themselves or their organizations. I think that professional, all professional teams and college teams, should publicize disclaimers to the effect that actions of members does not reflect the values of that organization if is bad behavior; maybe go so far as to claim that their people should not be held up as role models. Lisa! Thanks for the read and the prop. I firmly believe that a another violation by Harrison will earn him a dismissal. Seems that, read my other responses, we as the public put to much trust in persons in the public eye; we are then outraged when they exhibit bad behavior of any kind that causes them to fall from grace. Why do we always fail to realize that these are only human beings with all the flaws and frailities of #### sapiens? People who comport themselves to be God fearing, law abiding citizens and pursue criminals with the zeal of Spitzer, the former Governor of New York, are different; they should be hounded from office and be punished. But, an athlete or other who exhibits bad behavior should be looked upon differently for we all "screw up", don't we? Why do we tend to make heroes out of persons who have special talents and not take into account that they are, after all, human? Fuzz

Tales! Thanks for reading! I appreciate your imput into my post and your comments. In the back of my mind I remember the incidents of Little. Again, as in my other comments, why should we expect better behavior from these guys because they are in the public eye? We put them up there with God, Mom, America and apple pie, WRONGFULLY!! I don't condone bad behavior, but I DO understand it. I demand and expect "perfect" behavior from Law Enforcement officials, Judges and others who tout justice and equality, the rest...... I'll give a second chance. Harrison deserves at least that, if for no other reason Wilson had been given one. Fuzz

EQ!! My other fine feathered friend! Actually there are three of you guys, all ducks! LOL
Thanks for stopping by. Yeah, how does the NFL decide what is and isn't "acceptable" behavior. I don't really think the public should have input into what a business does or doesn't do, and sports is a business, except at the marketplace...a boycott would give them a message.
But the NFL should REQUIRE certain standards of behavior that are matters of public record. AND these standards must be enforced across the board. Whatever "standards" they now have aren't enough and they really aren't enforced. I mean, they do have a current "code of conduct", do they not? Thanks again. Fuzz
