NASCAR is like no other sport out there. There are no bullpens to replace a driver when he just doesn’t seem to have it for that race. There is no bench to come in and give the driver a break when he gets tired or winded. There are no second string drivers’ waiting on the sidelines to come in on certain situations that maybe the driver isn’t used to. There is also no seventh inning stretch. Just like there is no half time to give the drivers a chance to readjust, and make a run in the second half. Instead all of this and more are accomplished during the course of a NASCAR race, by one lonesome single driver.
NASCAR is one of the most grueling sports that is out there today. They are individuals, locked in a small #### pit of a 3800 pound metal sled, surrounded by a maze of steel bars that keep them from immediate injury in case the unexpected happens. They race in some of the most extreme weather conditions known to man. Temperatures at times can reach in excess of 135 degrees with very little air movement inside there temporary prison cell, for 3 to 4 hours at a time without a single break.
Patience is always a virtue, as well as good hand and eye coordination. This sport is not for those who are either claustrophobic, or suffer from being alone for hours at a time. NASCAR drivers are a whole different breed from lets say a baseball, football, or even a basketball player. Since all of these are team sports. In other words each player has a job to do. Not all players play the same position. But it’s not like this in NASCAR. Each driver plays defense as well as offense. Each driver also has to be alert as to what is going on around him, even though they get help from their spotters as well as their crew chiefs.
But all in all, it’s the drivers who make the final call as he pilots his car around lap after lap, minute after minute, since there are no timeouts. It’s a vicious never ending cycle race after race. Each track has its own distinct personality. Some allow you to run high lines, and some allow low lines. And of course there are the ones that really test the drivers’ skills, when they have to make right and left turns at extremely high speeds. This is what makes NASCAR so exciting, and different from all the rest of the sports. NASCAR is a high speed cat and mouse game. Where else can you watch 43 drivers playing bumper cars at 190 M.P.H.?
The color and pageantry that goes into each paint scheme adds to your experience, as your heart begins to beat, faster and faster. Then all of a sudden you get the hot, warm feeling of blood racing through your veins, as the laps slowly trickle away. The drivers every move is like poetry in motion, as they race side by side, trading paint, fighting for position, as the crowd yells in anticipation at the drivers’ next move. The roar of the engines is deafening, along with the sweet smell of rubber and gasoline, adds to the excitement that is already circling the air as they race around some of America’s most popular venues. And what does all this add up to? Pure adrenaline excitement. I’m Out
Great post man......and may I add that the unique smell of racing fuel always stimulates my senses.
Being stuck in the car has it's disadvantages. I remember Tony Stewart winning a race, he was complaining about stomach cramps all race long, he bypassed victory lane for a quick trip to his coach......I can only imagine why.
Granny- Thanks. I was remembering last years Labor day race when it was 118 outside. It had to be at least 140 in the cars. I dont recall any sport where an athlete was subjected to that kind of heat. Then you add in the fact that they were wearing fire suits along with their driving suits. Need I say more?
WW- My motto is there is nothing like the smell of nitro in the morning. I remember that race. Come to think of it he never did come out of his hauler. Thanks
3fan thanks for remind all of us hardcore NASCAR why we love this great sport. It is a sport that allows the fans to root for a single driver or a whole organization. It all depends on each individual fan.
As I watched the race today and Smoke was contending for the win, I felt the warm feeling of blood racing through my veins.
Ahh...Yes... Frevr touches the heart of are sport. The man has hit the nail on the head. The passion and the love these drivers have. From Gokarts to Nascar. From four wheelers to Indy cars. The passion in there eyes.
Guys like Tony Stewart, and Ken Schrader who will drive it at a dirt track. They will slide the #### end to the wall and rub. For what, a pat on the back and a job well done. Thats the passion.
Like I said Great read from a great Blogger Frevr as always, Great read.
