Jack and the Swaybar
May 18, 2008 | 10:41AM | report this

How many of us race fans have seen some of the ways that different car owners as well as crew chiefs try to bend the rules? Back at the beginning of the year when Jack Roush was missing a sway bar that was later returned by MWR. Remember how mad he got? Well like the saying goes. What doesn’t come out in the wash? Will definitely come out in the rinse.  I guess Jack was maybe thinking that he would  be able to get one leg up on the rest of the teams? So what did actually come out in the rinse?

Well if you haven’t noticed the way the rear end in the cars are a little ooops or should I say a lot more kicked out in the rear then normal. Then you probably haven’t really been paying much attention to the cars. But that’s okay. Now to those of you who have noticed.  Don’t go out and get your eyes checked just yet. Because what you are actually seeing is real. Its not an optical illusion or not because you have had to much to drink.

Jack and his cronies at Roush-Fenway Racing have figured out a way to get more speed going in and out of turns. By tweaking the rear ends just a tad to get the car to turn a little or should I say a lot more then normal. Now the big question is asked? Is it legal? Well according to Nascar. So far it seems that it is. Going back to 1985. When Bill Elliott  won 11 races that year. Alot of the drivers were saying that Bill's car looked like it was traveling dog legged down the track. Or another way to put it is. These cars almost look like they are headed to the infield while going down the straightaway’s. Which it was.
.
You really have to take your hats off to the engineers who went back in time to figure that if a car is already halfway into the turn before it gets there? Just think of how much speed they will pick up as they are entering and exiting the turns. Because speed is always made up in the turns and not on the straightaway’s. It’s going to be real interesting in the weeks to come to see if Nascar is going to do anything about it? Or will they just let it go since they haven’t addressed it yet.

Now as we go back to the beginning of the season and why Jack was so mad about the missing sway bar? That’s why Jack was mad that Toyota had his sway bar. Tweaking the car the way that Roush has been doing will put more stress on the front end. Jack designed a sway bar that would help the car get into the corner a lot smoother without so much stress with the way the rear end is kicked out. He never mentioned why he wanted that sway bar back so bad other then it was different from the rest. But he did mention that if he saw something different in the Toyotas that he would make an issue out of it. Now its time to sit back and watch and see if he will come out and tell the truth why he wanted that bar back so bad. Sorry Jack. But the cat is out of the hat or should I say the bag.

Now it looks like most of the teams are trying it. What next will these teams try  to figure out how to get over on their fellow competitors. I’m sure that this won’t be the first time. Or will it be the last. Until the next scandal hits the garages of our favorite race teams. I guess all we can do is wait. Because just as sure as one driver will win every week. I am sure that behind some garage or office is a team of experts plotting out there next diabolical scheme to try to get the upper hand in this cat and mouse game. Only time will tell. And the hands of time are ticking away. I’m Out

And Nascar made Elliot and Junior Johnson stop what they were doing. They said it was illegal then. I wonder about now?

Charrit-Its going to be interesting if they let them finish off the season or if they try to stop it now. It seems that some things never die. The teams had to do something to try to get an advantage especially since Nascar has taken so much away from the teams this year with the new car.

My "Daaalink Boris" noted this while watching the Richmond race. And they said the new car would make everything "equal". On to the next conspiracy.

Oh I am sure ole Jack is very upset that everyone else has figured out his little secret. Maybe next time he has a piece missing maybe he should not make such a big stink about it.

Maybe he could have kept his secret alittle longer.

But why I found funny about all this, was back in 2005, when Smoke was dominating like he was. Roush actually took the races and studied them to see how Smoke was getting into the corners. When he was letting off of the gas. And seeing if there was anything unique about the way his car was going down the track.

Does he not think if he does this, to figure out his competition. That the other teams will not do what they have to figure out their competition?

But these sideways cars do look funny going around the track. And I am sure that is things continue to go in a way that they are, NASCAR will step in and say enough. Because NASCAR is already having a hard time getting these cars on the scales to pass inspection because of them being so cockeyed.

I've commented about this on other blogs so I guess I will just say that Jack hasn't been complaining about anything lately because NASCAR hasn't busted his balls over this yet.

I also read that one 'unnamed' crew chief said "it is the only lipstick we can put on this pig."

Now that is funny.

3fan- I think NASCAR needs to work with the teams on these 1.5 milers to help that COT get racy again and if that means driving yawed out cars, well fine by me. Sam Hornish certainly could wheel it that way, not sure all of them will be able to. It will be interesting to see if NASCAR lets 'em run with it to a point or not if it improves the racing.

Also read this morning from thatsracin.com:

NASCAR Will Clean Up Crooked Cars
Expect NASCAR to tell Sprint Cup teams that they've gone far enough - and in some cases, too far - with making crooked cars. Sprint Cup Series director John Darby said Saturday that teams will get a memo, likely this week, telling them to "clean up" the way they're turning their wheels to help the cars handle better.
"They need some of that, but there are some of them that have pushed it," Darby said.

The rear wheels on some of the cars were turned to the point that some were having difficulty being pushed onto the scales used in inspection.
