Who are these fans?
Apr 28, 2008 | 12:02AM | report this

What is up with Raider oooops I mean the Nascar fans at Dega?  This is supposed to be the one track where all of Nascar most hardcore and faithfull fans come to watch there favorite drivers compete. The track of all tracks. The house that made the Alabama gang famous. The house that also took the life of one of their favorite drivers Davey Allison. This is also the house that Dale Earnhardt Sr called his own. The king of restrictor plate racing.

But lately this is also the place that unless your name is Earnhardt. You dont dare win a race and take your helmet off until you are safe in victory lane. We all seeen what happened last year when Gordon won and drove around with Dale Sr's flag as tribute to him. He was pelted with beer cans. That wasnt the first time that Jeff had cans thrown at him. After a controversial call on a yellow flag a couple of years ago that gave the victory to Jeff instead of Jr. Jeff couldnt take a victory lap because of the debris that was thrown at him. It almost resembled a twister as the debris came flying from all directions.

What is it that causes Nascar fan to all of a sudden act like Raider fan? Dont these few i *d *i *o *t *s realize that someone could get hurt? Is that the kind of example that you want to set for your kids? Isnt this supposed to be Nascar? The last of the family orientated sports? If this kind of behavior keeps up. How many adults would be willing to bring their kids to a sport where at one time was considered safe? Im not saying that this kind of behavior happens at all the tracks. But it seems to be following some sort of pattern. Violence has been a rising problem at alot of our tracks.

Its to bad when at one time you were able to go to a race and sit back and enjoy it. Nowadays you have to keep a good eye out. Because you never know when the fan sitting next to you is gonna snap. Just this past year at California. The arrest rate was up a pretty good percentage from previous years. And this was during the rain. Last year when it was 118 degrees. Cali was off the hook. Now Im not bad mouthing the fans who  go to see some good racing and also to have a good time. After all thats what going to a race is all about. But this is for the ones who choose to treat our sport as another place to get plastered and have no respect for the ones who are there to have fun and to also enjoy themselves.

Its to bad that some treat it as another quote unquote rock concert. Where the objective is that the one who gets the most drunk and acts the s t u p i d e s t is the one that is looked on the most highly by his friends. Who do you blame? Nascar for promoting the sport into more of a place for young people to party at? After all when young people drink. They are more prone to spend there hard earned bucks. And we have seen in past few years that Nascar is all about the money. The older crowd is a little more careful with how they spend. So why not add the pre race concerts and all of the hoopla.  Or do you blame the few fans who have decided that Nascar is just another event that they can party at where there is no curfew for beer sales like there is for any other sporting event?

Either way no matter how we look at it. Or for that matter how we try to deal with it. Its here to stay. There is nothing that we as fans can do about it. And we already know that Nascar isnt gonna do anything about it either. Or are they? Hmmmmm. After yesterdays incident after the race. Something needs to be done about it before someone gets hurt. Yup after Kyle Busch took the win. He came down to the start finish line and got out of his car to take his ceremoniuos bow. When out of the stands came a coke bottle hurled right at him.

When is it all gonna stop? Im Out

Pissed off not real fans of Nascar or Jr. even if they say they are fans. They got mad cause Shrub won in the house that Earnhardt built. I agree Frevr..They need to check that B.S. at the door.
Remember when they threw stuff at Gordon one year and a flag man got pellted in the back of the head with a cooler. I hope any and all "Fans" not real ones, who get caught throwing anything at the track, cars, and or drivers get prosicuted to the full extent of the law. By a Judge who loves Nascar.
As always Frevr GREAT post.

How about: No alcohol permitted at tracks. No alcohol means no losers in the stands. As much as they might want to be at the race, they wont be able to go without the alcohol.

3fan - You said it man...That is my biggest complaint about attending any kind of sporting event but lately NASCAR has gotten a lot worse with the druken stupidity in the stands. I don't believe NASCAR is at fault, your behavior is your own responsiblity but it wouldnt hurt to stop allowing coolers into the track at the very least and not allowing bottles or cans, only plastic cups.

Here at UC Berkeley mens basketball games they dont even give out lids to cups anymore because the students throw them onto the court when unhappy. Stupid! People need to grow up and remember what good sportsmanship means.

Great post 3fan!

Great post,3fan. We both know why NASCAR won't do anything about the drunks. Too much income from the beer companies. It would not hurt my feelings to not allow alcohol inside the track. Usually by Sunday I'm not gonna drink anyway. Long drive home.

Bristol does close their concession stands with a 100 laps to go. So you can't buy beer then, but the majority bring their own anyway.

There is not enough security in the stands. The few guards at the track are just keeping people off the catch fences. That's all they do.

It is embarassing to watch these so called 'fans' actions, and hear the profanities they use in front of children and old women. I'm no saint, I've done stupid things at the track also. But, I think I always respected other people. That's the main problem. Certain 'fans' think they have to show their #### to prove how hard core they are to other fans.

GREAT post. I was @ a hockey game recently and almost got into a fist fight yelling at an I*D*I*O*T fan throwin a cup of beer on the ice! What's happened to people. Do they honestly believe that they are more than a spectator? That their routing for someone and paying the price of admission is reason enough for them to express themselves any way they see fit? Calm down fans, enjoy the event, and realize that your behavior can affect the enjoyment of your fellow fans. Have a LITTLE respect for your fellow man/woman. How 'bout it?

Noahspop- To many youngsters drinking who cant handle there liqour. They do need to stiffen the penalties as far as fans who act like that. Or should I say people who act like that.

HMS- Wouldnt that be nice. But like Hanahan said. Thats where they make most of there money.

Kristen- Thanks. Over here at Dodger stadium they raised the price of beer to $12.75 just to try to discourage the fans from getting drunk and disorderly. The past few years Dodger fan is acting more like Raider fan. The language and the hostilty is real bad. They dont allow tailgating in the parking lot anymore. Its a $100.00 fine if you get caught.

Over here your not allowed to take any alcohol into any sporting event. And they check the coolers real well.

Hanahan- I totally agree with you. It seems that alcohol brings out the beast in some people. Thats why over here they stop selling beer after the 7th inning. They also stop after the 3rd quarter at football games. Im not against drinking because I used to drink. I dont anymore bit at least if you are gonna drink. Act like an adult.

Brad- Thanks. Thats the problem with society nowadays. They are to selfish to think about anyone else. As long as they can have there so called fun at someone elses expense. Thats all that most care about.

Great post 3 fan ---Shame on the (so called) fans who feel proud of themselves for flinging debris on the track and potentially injuring others. Thats not a valid way to show your displeasure.

Dittto on one of the above comments about the fans being slapped with a fine and perhaps thrown from the track, and prevented from purchasing tickets in the future.

Isnt throwing a can of beer or soda at someone sorta like assault or something?

Gerrel- Thanks. I tried not write how I really feel. Because I know that all of you will always finish what I am really trying to say. Thats what true friends do. Thanks again.

HMS- Over here in Cali its assault with intent to commit bodily injury. And alot of times thats state time depending on the severity of the crime. For example was the person intoxicated. Did he mean to hurt someone. Then they look at your past record. When I was in prison there were a few guys who were in there for that.
